Give one chemical test to distinguish between the following pairs of compounds.
(i) Methylamine and dimethylamine :- Methylamine is a primary amine, so it will
give carbalamine test. Dimethylamine being a secondary amine will not give
carbalamine test.When both the amines are heated with chloroform and KOH , in the
presence of alcohol Methylamine gives a obnoxious odour due to the formation of
methylisocyanide. Dimethylamine does not produce
anything.

(ii) Secondary and tertiary amines :- Secondary and tertiary amines can be
differenciated by Libermann test .Sec amines gives Libermann nitroamine test
forming yellow colour due to the formation of N-nitrosoamine. while tertiary
amines do not give this
test.

(iii) Ethylamine and aniline :-When the respective amines are heated with NaNO2
and HCl followed by treatment with an alkaline solution of 2-naphthol , a
brilliant orange, yellow ar red dye is formed. Aliphatic primary amines do not
give this azo dye test instead forms alcohol with the evolution of
nitrogen.

(iv) Aniline and benzylamine :- Aniline can be tested by the azodye test, While
benzylamine doesnot give the azodye test. When the respective amines are heated
with NaNO2 and HCl followed by treatment with an alkaline solution of 2-naphthol
, a brilliant orange, yellow ar red dye is formed by aniline. Benzyl amines do
not give this azo dye
test.

(v) Aniline and N-methylaniline. :- Aniline can be tested by the azodye test,
While N-Methylaniline doesnot give the azodye test. When the respective amines
are heated with NaNO2 and HCl followed by treatment with an alkaline solution of
2-naphthol , a brilliant orange, yellow ar red dye is formed with aniline. N-
