1i- Production
Design Concept
[A] Mass production
and 19th century
industrialisation vs. The
Individual
[B] The Bigger picture
vs. the smaller things.
[B]
Koreeda Hirokazu is known for his films
with the themes of self-reflection, and the
moments/milieus we have in our lives , in
which our internal thoughts translate into
action in the real world.
Similarily, French film La Jettee also uses
disjointed and sequencial camera sequences
to explore the theme of time, and (in terms
of this project), the small moments that
make it up.
ii- Style Influence Map
Common
themes
around
being
trapped,
repetitive-
ness (the
endless
cycle).
Victorian Newspapers
Tabloids.

"IS HE THE WHITECHAPEL MURDERER?" The Illustrated Police News etc (London, England), Saturday, September 22, 1888; Issue 1284
Victorian Advertisements.

Repetitive
use of dots
and lines
for cross
hatching .
Victorian book illustrations.

Style of furniture was quite

slender. Used in Reapers
office.
Concept Art
Style:
Illustrations-Victorian.
Advertisements- Victorian.
Mass Production and
Industrialisation Reaper
Mass production- Modern
Day Employee

Often the noses are quite

similar, and cross hatching
is used to extremes.
Influence Maps
Victorian Mill Workers,
Victorian Workhouses
[I] Character & Victorian Candle Makers.
The working class families tend to look directly at the camera, (more natural), while the
higher class look away. Could I have the Reaper like the latter?
In his office, and only seeing others as figures on paper, rather than individuals?
Keeping warm:
Chopping and selling
kindling was an ancient
way to make a few
pence.

Death is an actual place, where the ones lost in

the city, or are searching for longer to live, trade
in black market candle wax as a crude way of
prolonging ones life span.
Candle represents life span? Or candle is needed
to exist in this world?
Why?
If there are dangers lurking in shadows, the only
way to survive is having some way to see them.

Victorian Match Seller Greenwich, 1884

Henry Mayhews London Labour and the London Poor

Match Seller in Ludgate Hill,

London (1892)

Written extracts of real

people living and working on
the 19th century Victorian
streets. Useful for knowing
how to write the Victorians
dialogue in script.
[II] Environment
Victorian Cameos contain the owners remaining wax energy levels. This needs to be taken to
Death to be burned, and then to allow them the owner to move on.

[III] Props

Crafts became less unique and creator

oriented, but mass produced . I.E.
Candles are such examples.
Main Design
influence.

Prices Patent Candles Ltd, candlemakers since 1830

The Office
More slender then
bulky. Less practical
and more for show.
