DESCRIBE HOW YOUR INITIAL EFFORTS HAVE SET UP YOUR PROJECT FOR SUCCESS? CITE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES WHERE POSSIBLE OF HOW YOU HAVE BEEN COLLABORATING.
NOTE: FOCUS ON HOW YOU HAVE IMPROVED COLLABORATION, RATHER THAN A LIST OF THINGS YOU HAVE DONE. E.G. WHEN I NOTICED THAT JIMMY DIDNT HAVE A JOB I ASKED HIM TO HELP US
WITH PREPARING THE MICROSCOPE. RATHER THAN I GOT ALL THE EQUIPMENT READY.

The first challenge my team faced was selecting a topic none of us were on the same page. Instead of arguing, we went
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
around in a circle, shared our arguments, and took questions from the others. Then we discussed ways to join similar
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
ideas and compromise. By focusing on the areas that we all agreed on, we were able to find a topic that we all found some
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
solace in. This set us up for success because no one in the team was stuck with a project they hate, thus meaning we are
be more motivated to collaborate and work hard. Another effort that set us up for success is discussing our strengths and
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
areas of expertise right off the bat. For example, I said that Im a good communicator, like to coordinate and lead, have
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
been learning about plants (specifically, about photosynthesis, greenhouses, etc), and am useless with math and
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
engineering. These introductions meant we all understood exactly what strengths/weaknesses we had, so that we could
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
all better delegate tasks and fit together. For example, Anika and I worked together to tinker with design ideas and write up
the specifications (which we had all decided on as a team) while Austin and Jerry, the more mathematically minded,
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
banged out specific measurements and such for the final design drawing and cutting list. To summarize, it is through open
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
communication and motivation that our team has set our project up for success.
EVALUATE YOUR SELF MOTIVATION
I consider myself to be fairly well motivated for this project because my teams project (building a vertical garden) is
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
something that Ive always wanted to do. This project is simply a push for me to actually do something I am interested in.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Because of this, I am motivated to make it work and put in the time and effort to achieve it. However, I have noticed I look at
this project as of a lower priority than other schoolwork, which is a mistake as it still impacts my final grade and classwork.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Therefore, while I am quite personally passionate about the project, I have to turn it to a more academically-fueled

motivation.
OUTLINE YOUR PROJECT AND IDENTIFY WHETHER YOUR IT REFLECTS THE APPLICATION SCIENCE THROUGH DESIGN TECHNOLOGY.

My project is about creating a functional, durable, and environmentally friendly planting system, which we will achieve with
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
the creation of a small vertical garden. It will be low-maintenance and user friendly. It reflects my science (Biology) as the
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
needs of different species of plants will vary in terms of access to light, water, size of container, etc. Knowing the biology of
plants and understanding how the systems work gives me the basic information I need to make our garden a comfortable

and flourishing environment for the plants.

HOW COULD YOU CHANGE YOUR INVESTIGATION IF TIME BECOMES A PROBLEM. (E.G, TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE TIME.)

The best part of our investigation (and therefore product) is that it is actually a single unit that we will multiply to form rows
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
and columns. Because if this, if it is too much, we can easily either downsize the overall product by making less of the unit
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
and producing a smaller overall product, or simplifying the design of the individual unit. Similarly, we can expand on our
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
investigation by creating a larger product through more units, or adding to the individual design. Changes to the individual
design are relatively easy with tools like Pinterest, which contains ideas on multiple ways to achieve a final similar product.

JUSTIFY THIS DECISION:

While I believe I have been collaborating with my group very well, taking my usual position as mediator and delegator, I
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
need to be more motivated and realize the importance of this project from an academic point of view, putting more time and
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
effort into completing work to the best of my ability and on time. Moreover, while I believe myself to be fairly self-aware about
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
my personal skills and areas of growth, I think I need to look at the project from more of a scientific point of view (being the
biologist of the group) rather than the more design-based approach I am more personally comfortable with taking.

DESCRIBE THE ATL SKILLS HAVE YOU TRIED TO MEASURE AND TEST YOURSELF IN SO FAR? HOW HAVE YOU TRIED TO TEST YOURSELF IN THESE SKILLS?

While I see myself as a good communicator, I am often too self-assured and find it hard to be open minded and truly give
other ideas a shot. Because of this, I have tried to have conversations where I limit the amount of times I interrupt others or
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
how long I wait before speaking. This has forced me to see how good of a communicator I really am. I have also challenged
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
myself with my research skills, trying to look into the background of my sources and question their reliability rather than take
what it says at face value (something I have been guilty of in the past). This has made me a more thoughtful researcher and
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
the notes I take (hopefully) more factual.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

WHICH 2 ATL SKILLS WOULD YOU SAY ARE YOUR STRONGEST AND WHY?

My communication and social skills are the strongest because of my strong background in public speaking. I am able to
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
vocalize my opinions and never hesitate to contribute to the discussion. Similarly, I am able to listen (rather than talk), hear
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
what the other person is saying, see how our ideas can be synthesized, etc. I believe this most came into play in the very
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
beginning, when my team was just put together. At this stage, there was not much discussion amongst my teammates. I
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
was able to use my strongest skills to break the ice and get the dice rolling. Other times when these skills came in hand
were when a teammate was having trouble articulating their idea, so I was able to encourage them and suggest the words/
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
concepts I thought they might have been thinking of, or even just recording notes of our conversations and ideas thoroughly.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

WHICH 2 ATL SKILLS WOULD YOU SAY YOU ARE WEAKEST IN AND HOW MIGHT YOU IMPROVE THESE?

My self-management and thinking (specifically critical thinking) skills are the weakest. In terms of self-management, I am a
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
chronic procrastinator and find it hard to jumpstart working on tasks. I can improve this with tools like smaller personal
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
deadline self-imposed through a complex system of calendar alerts and hand-written reminders, pomodoro timers, etc.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
These are all tools that I have used before and know work for me, I just need to practice using them regularly. In terms of
thinking, I often find it hard to synthesize information from different areas of knowledge/sources. To improve, greater
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
discussion amongst group mates and deeper conversation will allow me to see the thought process of others, which will
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
give me an example or template for my own.
