The Trinity: Unveiled Through Scripture

Old Testament References/Inferences for the

Trinity

Genesis 1:26 Then God said, "Let Us make (hf,[]n) man in Our
image (Wnmel.c;B), according to Our likeness (WnteWmd>Ki); and let
them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the
sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every
creeping thing that creeps on the earth."1

3:22 Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has
become like one of Us (WNM,m), knowing good and evil; and
now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the
tree of life, and eat, and live forever"

11: 7 "Come, let Us (hd'r>nE) go down and there confuse their

language, so that they will not understand one another's
speech."

Isaiah 6:8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord (yn"doa), saying,
"Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us? (Wnl'-%l,yE) " Then I
said, "Here am I. Send me!"

Psalm 45:6 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A

scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 7 You
have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; Therefore

oil of joy above Your fellows.

Hebrews 1:8 But of the Son (to.n ui`o,n) He says, "YOUR

THRONE, O GOD (o` qeo,j), IS FOREVER AND EVER, AND
THE RIGHTEOUS SCEPTER IS THE SCEPTER OF HIS2
(sou) KINGDOM. 9 "YOU HAVE LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS
AND HATED LAWLESSNESS; THEREFORE GOD (o` qeo,j),
YOUR GOD (o` qeo,j sou), HAS ANOINTED YOU (se) WITH
THE OIL OF GLADNESS ABOVE YOUR COMPANIONS."

Isaiah 63:10 But they rebelled And grieved His Holy Spirit
(Avd>q' x;Wr-ta); Therefore He turned Himself to become their
enemy, He fought against them.

New Testament Evidence

Verses Where All 3 Persons of the Trinity are seen

Matthew 3:16 After being baptized, Jesus (o` VIhsou/j) came

up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens
were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God (to. pneu/ma tou/
qeou/) descending as a dove and lighting on Him (auvto,n), 17
and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is My
beloved Son (o` ui`o,j mou o` avgaphto,j), in whom I am well-
pleased."

28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,

baptizing them in the name of the Father (tou/ patro.j) and the
Son (tou/ ui`ou/) and the Holy Spirit (tou/ a`gi,ou pneu,matoj)..

Despite early manuscript evidence for the existence of the first person pronoun, the weight and
variety of external evidence, and the internal difficulty of construing autou lends support to the reading
Your in Hebrews 1:8. See: Bruce Metzger, A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament, p. 662.

The Trinity: Unveiled Through Scripture

1 Corinthians 12:4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the

same Spirit (pneu/ma). 5 And there are varieties of ministries,
and the same Lord (ku,rioj). 6 There are varieties of effects,
but the same God (qeo,j) who works all things in all persons.

Note: Though Jesus Christ is God, In the New

Testament Jesus Christ is referred to as Lord (ku,rioj),
and God the Father is either referred to as patro.j or qeo,j,
which is another reason why the previous verse with its
usage of qeo,j must have primary reference to the Father in
distinction from the Son and the Spirit. There is a clear
distinction in the New Testament between Christ and God.
(cf. Romans 1:4 1 Cor 8:6, 2 Cor. 4:4)

{Romans 1:4 who was declared the Son of God (ui`ou/ qeou/)
with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to
the Spirit of holiness (pneu:ma agiwsuvnh), Jesus Christ our
Lord (kuri,ou)}

2 Corinthians 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ (tou/

kuri,ou VIhsou/ Cristou), and the love of God (tou/ qeou), and
the fellowship of the Holy Spirit (a`gi,ou pneu, matoj), be with you
all.

Ephesians 4:4 There is one body and one Spirit (pneu/ma),

just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5
one Lord (ku,rioj), one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and
Father (qeo.j kai. path.r) of all who is over all and through all
and in all.

1 Peter 1:2 according to the foreknowledge of God the

Father (qeou/ patro,j), by the sanctifying work of the Spirit
(pneu, matoj), to obey Jesus Christ (VIhsou/ Cristou/) and be

the fullest measure.

Jude 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your

most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit (pneu, mati a`gi,w|), 21
keep yourselves in the love of God (qeou/), waiting anxiously
for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ (tou/ kuri,ou h`mw/n VIhsou/
Cristou/) to eternal life.

There is one God. When we use this

statement we mean it in two senses.

1. There is no other God except for YHWH

Isaiah 45:5-6 "I am the LORD (hwhy), and there is no other;

Besides Me there is no God (MyIhlTa). I will gird you, though
you have not known Me; 6 That men may know from the
rising to the setting of the sun That there is no one besides
Me. I am the LORD, and there is no other.

1 Kings 8:60 so that all the peoples of the earth may know
that the LORD (He-NASB) is God (MyIhlTaDh awh hDwhy); there is
no one else.

2. Despite the fact that God is three distinct persons,

there is nevertheless only One God.

Deuteronomy 6:4 "Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God,

the LORD is one (d`DjRa)!

Mark 12:29, 32 Jesus answered, "The foremost is, 'HEAR,

O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE (ei) LORD; 32
The scribe said to Him, "Right, Teacher; You have truly

stated that HE IS ONE (ei), AND THERE IS NO ONE ELSE

BESIDES HIM;

John 10:30 "I and the Father are one (en)."

Romans 3:30 since indeed God (who will justify the

circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith) is
one (ei).

Application

Unity in the midst of Diversity

Genesis 1:27 God created man (~d'a'h'-ta) in His own image,

in the image of God He created him (Ata-3ms); male (rk'z) and
female (hb'qen>W)He created them (~t'a-3mp).
