Summer Internship & Mentor Program in Real Estate

Overview and Objectives

The primary objective of the internship program is to provide professional
experience and mentoring for select Sauder School of Business students
interested in a career in real estate. The program provides third or fourth year
undergraduates with a paid position over the summer in real estate, typically
with a local firm that specialized in real estate development, investment,
brokerage, or appraisal. Students acquire valuable professional experience and
build mentor networks. Sponsoring organizations gain access to the best and
brightest students in an internationally renowned educational program And the
Sauder School builds bridges between education and training and strengthens
the links between the Faculty and the business and government communities.

Activities

The focus of the program is an internship running for three to four months over
the period May to August. Sponsoring organizations are asked to provide full-
time paid summer jobs for the students and a mentor to act as a contact person
for faculty and students. It is central to the goal of the program that the sponsors
provide mentoring to the student, introducing the intern to the organizations role
in the real estate industry, and not just use the position as a standard source of
summer labour. Ideally, the internship would involve a workload that allows the
students to see how aspects of their studies get applied in the industry.

Admissions

Admission to the program is through a three-step process. First, a pool of
candidates is selected from undergraduates from Sauder undergraduates who
have taken courses in real estate or urban economics. Second, using resumes,

(over)

brief personal statements, and personal interviews, the most promising
internship candidates are selected from this pool. Third, a selection of these top
students is offered to each sponsor, so that both sponsors and interns are
matched with choice. Both the sponsor and the student must be agreeable for
the internship to occur.

Structure and Administration

The program is run by Sauders Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre with
assistance from the UBC Centre for Urban Economics and Real Estate.

The Sauder School of Business and the UBC Centre for Urban Economics and Real
Estate are extremely grateful to Grosvenor Americas for providing financial
support to administer this program and help in supporting the Centre.

Investment, intend to Sauder after their internship summer, enroll in a least one
additional class offered in the real estate option.
