Notes for Big Sis:

This is quite difficult to explain, so I will try my best to give detailed outlines:
I. Before you start teaching, make sure you open the periodic table of elements on
his iPad (or even better if you print it and give it to him as a hard copy), then
introduce the following concepts:
a) The location of metals, non-metals and metalloids. Explain the terms and
give him real life examples such as gold, aluminium, iron etc so he
gets the hand of it. Make him say the names so he gets used to it.
b) Then explain to him briefly we have an ionic compound when there is a
metal and a non-metal (Ill explain later why), and that we have a
covalent compound when we have two non-metals (again leave the
explanation for me). He really needs to understand this to name the
compounds.
c) Then introduce notion of an ion (refresh his memory of electrons and
how its gained and lost and who loses or gains them)
d) Then finally introduce cations and anions and how they are represented
with plus or minus signs. Give him few examples from the periodic table
e.g. Li+ for Lithium ion etc
e) Then start teaching him from the presentation Naming Binary
Compounds.*
*On slide 3, there is a table of prefixes he has to MEMORISE, but please show that the
names or logical again from real life examples i.e. octopus has eight legs thus octo is for 8,
triangle for 3 etc

Homework:
There are two practice tables he has to finish. It is going to be difficult for him. Show him the
periodic table AND the list of Cations&Anions and give him an example or two so he knows
whats going on.
