2001 STEERING

Steering Columns

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

WARNING: To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully
follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Deactivate air bag system before
performing any repairs. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG
SYSTEM .

NOTE: For procedures relating to Spectra models, refer to Sephia unless otherwise
directed.

Steering columns are designed to be collapsible upon impact. The steering column consists of solid steering
shaft with a lower joint assembly. Turn signal, headlight, ignition and windshield washer/wiper switches are
part of the combination switch that is mounted on steering column. Combination switch can be serviced by
removing steering wheel and column covers.

Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), drivers side air bag is located in horn pad with clockspring that is part of
the combination switch. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS before servicing these units.

SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
Disconnect negative battery cable for 10 minutes before servicing. To ensure complete discharge, turn
headlights on. Observe precautions as follows:

z Always wear protective gloves when handling deployed or damaged air bag modules.
z Never service wiring or electrical components with air bag connected.
z DO NOT allow steering shaft to rotate freely during servicing.
z Always wear safety glasses when handling air bag modules.

DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM


DISABLING

The SRS air bag diagnostic unit contains a back-up power supply. Air bag system back-up power supply must
be de-energized before servicing any SRS Air Bag components. Disconnect negative battery cable and WAIT
10 minutes before servicing air bag system components. To ensure complete discharge, turn headlights on.

ACTIVATING

After servicing SRS air bag components, connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch on, while viewing
air bag indicator light. If light illuminates for 4-8 seconds and goes out, system is operating as designed. If light

remains illuminated or flashes, a system fault is present. See appropriate article in MITCHELL(R) AIR BAG
SERVICE & REPAIR manual.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNING: To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully
follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS . Deactivate air bag system before
performing any repairs. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG
SYSTEM .

STEERING WHEEL

NOTE: DO NOT try to remove steering wheel by striking shaft with a hammer. Position
front wheels straight ahead and steering wheel centered to aid in proper
installation of steering wheel.

Removal

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel air bag from center of steering wheel. Mark steering
wheel to steering shaft for reassembly reference. Remove steering wheel lock nut. Using a steering wheel
puller, remove steering wheel.

Installation

To install, position steering wheel in proper position. Tighten steering wheel lock nut to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install steering wheel air bag. Connect negative battery cable.

COMBINATION SWITCH

NOTE: Clockspring connector is part of combination switch and is not serviced as a


separate part.

Removal

Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL . Remove upper and lower column covers. Remove
combination switch retaining screws. Disconnect combination switch connectors. Remove combination switch.
See Fig. 2 or Fig. 3 .

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure. Install steering wheel. Tighten steering wheel lock nut to specification.
See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

1. Remove steering wheel and combination switch. See STEERING WHEEL and COMBINATION
SWITCH . Disconnect ignition switch connectors.
2. Using a hammer and chisel, make a groove in steering lock assembly shear bolts. See Fig. 1 . Remove
shear bolts with a flat blade screwdriver. Remove steering lock assembly. To install, reverse removal
procedure. Tighten NEW shear bolts evenly, until heads break off.

STEERING COLUMN

Removal & Installation

1. Position front wheels straight ahead. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel and
combination switch. See STEERING WHEEL and COMBINATION SWITCH . Remove steering
lock assembly. See STEERING LOCK ASSEMBLY .
2. On Sephia, Spectra and Rio models, remove lower panel. On all models, mark steering shaft assembly to
intermediate shaft "U" joint for installation reference. Remove steering shaft assembly to intermediate

shaft "U" joint bolt. Separate steering "U" joint from intermediate shaft. See Fig. 2 or Fig. 3 . Remove
steering column upper bracket bolts. Remove steering column.
3. On Sportage models, remove OBD-II Data Link Connector screws attaching it to mounting bracket.
Remove 2 upper plastic mounting trim covers by prying from side of covers until they are released from
knee bolster panel. Remove 4 middle and lower plastic mounting trim covers by prying from bottom until
they are released from knee bolster panel. Remove 4 knee air bag module mounting nuts. Remove 2
upper and lower plastic mounting screws.
4. Position knee air bag module away from instrument panel. Reach around to rear of module, and
disconnect knee air bag module connector. Remove knee air bag. See Fig. 4 . Remove 4 lower column
bracket fasteners. Remove upper intermediate shaft set bolt. Remove steering column from vehicle.
5. On all models, to install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

OVERHAUL
STEERING COLUMN

Disassembly & Reassembly

Steering column disassembly and reassembly procedures are not available from manufacturer. Check steering
shaft for bends, damage or sheared plastic pins. Check bearings for excessive play. Replace steering column as
necessary.
