[SEA LEVEL RISE REPORT]

1. What are sea level rise, impacts and the causes of it?

This sea-level rise is a response to increasing amounts of

greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and the resulting changes
climate change, globally. Sea-level rise contributes to coastal erosion
and flood of low-lying coastal regions, particularly during extreme
sea level events. It also leads to saltwater interference into aquifers,
estuaries and channels. These changes impact on coastal
ecosystems, water resources, and human settlements and activities.

Regions at most risk include heavily populated cities and towns,
small islands and sandy coasts backed by major coastal
developments.

2. What do scientists expect to happen to the Australian

coastline as a result of global warming? What will be the
extent of the sea level rise?

Australian government environmental committee report warns that

thousands of miles of coastline are under threat from rising sea
levels and suggests prohibiting people from living in vulnerable
areas along the coast.

Figure 1 shows the prediction of sea level rise in Australia, since 1880 till 2020. Since the
1960s, sea level rise has been increasing every year and in 2010 results recorded of sea
level rise was 180mm. Australias future is not looking so bright with expected rising of
sea level due to rising ocean temperatures.
