Lesson Plan

Day: M T W T F Date: 07/02/2017 Time: 9am-10am Year: 11

Learning Area: Science Human Biology Topic: Cell Structure &

Function, Cell Theory Lesson 1
Curriculum content description:
The cell theory states that all cells arise from other living cells.
All living things carry out the life processes.
Select, construct and use appropriate representations, including labelled diagrams and
images of various cells, tissues and organ systems, to communicate conceptual
understanding, solve problems and make predictions.
Students prior knowledge and experience:
Know that the body is made of cells and have an idea of what a cell is.

Learning purpose:
To understand that cells are the basis of all life and this is the base knowledge for the rest of
the human biology class.
Learning objectives: Evaluation:
On completion of this lesson, students
will be able to: Completion of worksheet as we go through
lesson.
Explain the cell theory. Walk-around discussion to identify if
Identify organelles (pictorially) and explain students have taken in material and have all
their function. information needed.
Understand that each organelle has a
specific function in the cell.

Preparation and Resources:

PowerPoint
Videos
Worksheets cell diagram and cell part + function worksheet

*interactive webpage available and model of cell booked in case students go

through planned material ahead of time allocated*
Catering for diversity (detail any adjustments considerations for educational/resource
adjustments)

Timing: Learning Experiences:

1. Introduction:

Show video on introduction to cells.

After video:
Many of the cells and cell interactions in the video are topics that will be covered
5-6min this year but in order for us to get to the really exciting part of human biology we
need a base of knowledge

Before we can learn about systems and how cells communicate we need to know
what is within a cell that makes it function; that allows it to be able to work
collectively with other cells in order for us to be able to function

2. Sequence of learning experiences:

Hand out worksheets.

While handing out: Ive made up a couple worksheets for you to make it really
2min easy to jot down notes today and it will also come in handy as we move forward
in the year and when you start revising for your test. So you can fill out the first
couple pages as we go through the different parts of the cell.

30- PowerPoint of cell theory & different organelles and their function
notes on speech within PowerPoint
40min
use model in class to build cell as we go through each organelle
students take note of function, location and name of organelles and parts
of cell as we go
5-
10mins Walk around room in last few minutes to see where students are with
understanding and filling out the worksheets.

If need be, make PowerPoint and labelled copy of diagram available on their
online portal after lesson for added support.

*if running ahead of schedule get students to start filling out the
diagram of the cell*

3. Lesson conclusion:

By the end of this lesson you should have taken away what the function of each
part of the cell is and the be able to identify the structures pictorially. You also
should have an idea of what cell theory is. Make sure you have a look over your
notes tonight because we will be reviewing tomorrow and then be putting this all
together on a diagram of the cell.

*Bring coloured pens/markers tomorrow and a device if you want to use your
own, we have booked some laptops if you dont bring your own device*

Lesson Evaluation:
(Reflect on the lesson. What worked? What did not work? What would you change? Why?)

Worksheets were a good idea for students to provide a framework of what students should
take away from class
Walking around to check understanding and for feedback on lesson was a good idea to
gauge what worked as students were quite honest with what they thought.
The video I played was good and held their interest.

Definitely think there was too much content in the lesson and not enough time to take it in. I
would make the lesson more interactive if I did it again. As I am doing this lesson over 2
days I think it would have been good to only do half the content today and then an
interactive that relates to delivered content and the same for lesson 2.
Also think a better explanation of why it is important to know this was needed.
