Learning Journal #4

Step 2: This week, what we focused on and learned about were discourse
communities. These communities are an environment in which like-minded individuals
and experts about a particular subject or aspect can discuss their ideas, theories, beliefs,
and ethics. One such community, and quite large at that, is Wikipedia. However, this
differs from other discourse communities because this site is a collection of knowledge
that is shared with the general public. In other words, its a melting pot of discourse
communities. For this reason, we are tasked to contribute to this extensive well of
knowledge with something unique. From my understanding, this task was made to
encourage the new generation to provide new information to this world and develop our
own ability to conduct research. In addition, it will aid us in being able to provide reliable
references and citations to our future works, as with no credible foundation bodes
untrustworthy information.

Step 3 and Step 4:

http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/036354657800600104
Reasoning: Scientific article on the effect of elbow injury to throwing form and power.
Conducts an observational study and provides data to support claims.
Main Idea: In this article, the main idea is to evaluate the relationship between injury and
the delivery of a baseball. By evaluating and analyzing various recordings of slow mo
films of athletes, the scientific conductors can gather critical information on their form
and delivery of the baseball and utilize this info to see if there is a correct manner of
delivery that is both effective and does not leave the throwing elbow susceptible to injury.
I will use this info as to explain the particular importance and risk of the simple task of
pitching and elaborate on the forces exerted throughout the body.
http://myphysio.com/docs/ellenbecker_total_range_of_motion_msse_2002.pdf
Reasoning: Examines the range of motion of the elbow within both baseball and tennis
players. Provides another experimental study with data to support claims.
Main Idea: The main exploration field this study covers is the range of two variations of
athletes, tennis players and baseball players, and determine any differences or statistically
significant data between extremities and these two groups of athletes. To do so, their
focus is the glenohumeral joint mobility in the elbow and find a balance between this
particular joint and stability. To incorporate this source, I will use it as a basis to elaborate
on the range of motion of the elbow and the inhibition of prolonged use, as well as
determine which extremity, dominant or nondominant, provides better range of motion.
http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0363546509350067
Reasoning: Posted on a site with an immense amount of medical journals about other
topics. The journal has been peer reviewed and has a fat list of references towards bottom
of article.
Main Idea: Along with range of motion, this article conducts a study to determine the
correlation between the maximum throwing velocity and possible elbow injury to the
pitcher. An observational study was conducted as there was none existing at the time of
publication, and used 23 professional pitchers to attain their needed evidence. Although
blunt, this study provides a stable foundation to justify the pre existing assumptions of
higher pitching velocity and elbow injury, which I can then employ and spread that this
correlation does exist.

Reasoning: Another scientific study on the extent of injuries to the elbow joint in baseball
players. Written by a medicinae doctor, or M.D.
Main Idea: This article is solely based on the injury of the elbow, or as what they refer to
as Little League Elbow as they are using multiple cases and x-rays of the youth to
determine the immediate area of injury and the cause of injury. They conduct this study in
order to contradict the preconceived idea of incorrect form in the youth as the main cause
of injury. At this point in youth, the elbow joint itself is susceptible to a lot of injury no
matter the form of delivery. I will use this to distinguish the risks between youth pitching
and professional pitching.

1/97?ajax
Reasoning: This is an entire textbook of sports medicine and injuries correlated with
sports. In addition, it was found using the UC Davis Library Databanks.
Main Idea: In this massive article or publication, the author focuses on the scope of
overuse and overtraining injuries in the realm of baseball and other athletics. By
incorporating several cases of injury and over usage from different sports that incorporate
the same motion of the elbow, wrist, and shoulder, the author can accurately describe and
pinpoint the cause of injury and from there determine any treatments or rehabilitation
methods to better such injuries.
http://reader.aappublications.org/care-of-the-young-athlete-2nd-edition/517?ajax
Reasoning: An entire publication used for the care of athletes. Provides many examples
and methods to prevent injuries in a variety of sports.
Main Idea: As the title suggest, the main point of this article is to alert and provide
athletes, and those affiliated, to properly care for their wellbeing. In order to do so,
sections of this massive publication provides several techniques and exercises to
strengthen and condition a particular part or set of parts of the body so that they become
less susceptible to injury when used. On my Wikipedia page, I will use this reference to
provide methods of injury prevention or rehabilitation.

Step 7:
Finding credible sources for any research conducted is always a drag, some more than
others. Properly citing these sources is even more difficult as there are a variety of ways
to introduce such citations within a text, and thus there is no definite procedure in doing
so. I main issue with sources is how I incorporated them in my writing or script. I would
attempt some type of hybrid mechanism that incorporated several conventions of citation
and distort the flow of my work. That, and I used to find it difficult to incorporate the
citation of sources that flowed with the fluidity of my work. To fix this, I did as Stedman
explained multiple times in his article. I would tell the reader that I will be citing a
particular source about a particular subject and follow up with a quotation or reference
from the particular source with its respective information. The problem I had most often
that Stedman elaborates on is bluntly inserting a quotation with no warning or prior
information. As such, I will adhere the lessons within Stedmans article and utilize my
previous writing experience to aid in the completion of my Wikipedia page on Pitchers
Elbow.

Wiki Outline:
Overview: Pitchers elbow is a popular term to reference a common injury or condition in
the elbow region, also known as medial epicondylitis. This condition can also be referred
to as Golfers Elbow. This occurs with the overuse of the flexor region and forearm
muscles using repeated forceful flexions and extentions.
