First mid Semester Examination February 2016

(CEL 602: Theory of structures-II)

Time: One Hour Max. Marks: 20

Note: a. Total Number of questions: 03. Attempt any one question.

b. Missing data, if any, may be assumed suitably.

1. a. Find the load at first yield Py and ultimate (collapse) load Pu for the 07
structure shown in Fig. 1. Area is same for all the wires.
b. Find the shape actor for a square section with one of its diagonal placed
03
horizontal; Or,
Write the three necessary and sufficient conditions for attaining the
collapse load in beams.
c. Calculate the collapse load for the beam shown in Fig. 2. Assume the 10
section is prismatic with fully plastic moment being Mp.

2. a. List the assumptions made in the portal method of the analysis of

03
frames for lateral loading.
b. Determine (approximately) the internal moments at A and B (Fig. 3) 07
caused by vertical loading.
c. Determine the approximate axial forces, shears and moments for all the 10
members of the frame shown in Fig. 4 using the cantilever method.

3. a. For the beam (Fig. 5), determine the maximum positive and negative
06
shears at point D due to a concentrated live load of 120 kN, a uniformly
distributed live load of 42 kN/m, and a uniformly distributed dead load
of 14 kN/m.
b. For the beam (Fig. 5), determine the maximum positive bending
06
moment at point D due to the wheel loads of the moving truck shown in
Fig.6.
c. Determine the absolute maximum bending moment in a 15 m-long
08
simply supported beam due to the wheel loads of the moving truck
shown in Fig. 6.
