ABSTRAK

LATAR BELAKANG : Merokok membahayakan bagi hampir semua organ

tubuh termasuk organ pernafasan, menimbulkan banyak penyakit dan
mempengaruhi kesehatan perokok secara umum. Merokok meningkatkan
dimintakan melakukan treadmill test. Analisis data menggunakan uji statistik
t-independent test.
Kedokteran Universitas Sumatera Utara.
perokok.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND : Smoking is harmful to almost all organs of the body including

the respiratory organs, causing many diseases and affecting the health of
smokers. Smoker increase the risk of fatality due to chronic lung disease up to 10
times.
PURPOSE : The general objective of this study was to determine the differences
in maximal oxygen uptake and respiratory movements between student of FK
USU smokers with nonsmokers while exercising.

METHODS: This research is an experimental study that use a simple claster

sampling with as the sampling technique. The total sample is sixty male students
which or divided into 30 smokers and 30 non smokers. The students VO2max and
respiratory movement is assessed during the exercise. The exercise is perfomed by
using a treadmill test with modbalke protocol for 10 minutes . The data analysis
are konducted by using t-independent statistical tests an it is said to be
significant when p<0,05.

RESULTS : Intake of oxygen maximum of 30 smokers and 30 nonsmokers with

male gender. The average smoker VO2max 28.38 (SD 0.64) and non-smokers
28.62 (SD 0.71) obtained p> 0.05. The average increase in wave amplitude at rest
- Stage 1 in smokers 1.20 (SD 0.925) and non-smokers 1.27 (SD 0.868) obtained
p> 0.05. The average increase in wave amplitudopada when stage 1 - stage 2 in
smokers -0.10 (SD 1.029) and nonsmokers -0.13 (SD 1.008) obtained p> 0.05.
The average increase in wave amplitude during stage 2 to stage 3 on smokers -
0.77 (SD 0.817) and nonsmokers -0.70 (SD 0.974) obtained p> 0.05.

CONCLUSION : there is no differences in both VO2max and respiratory

movements among the smoking and no smoking sutend while doing exercise at the
Medical Faculty, University of North Sumatera.
Keywords: VO2max, respiratory movements, and smokers with nonsmokers.
