Adverb (부사)
An adverb is a word that tells us more about a verb.
The principal job of an adverb is to modify or give more information about
the verb, adjectives and other adverbs.
부사는 동사에 대해 더 많이 말해주는 단어이다. 부사의 본래 역할은 동사를 변형
하거나, 동사, 형용사와 다른 부사에 대해 더 많은 정보를 주는데 있다.

Adverb of frequency (빈도 부사)

An Adverb of Frequency answers the question "How often?" or "How frequently?" It
tells us how often somebody does something.
빈도부사는 “얼마나 자주?”나 “얼마나 종종”을 묻는 질문에 대답을 한다.
어떤 사람이 무엇을 얼마나 종종 하는지를 말해준다.

Adverbs of frequency come before the main verb. (except the main verb "to be")
- We usually go shopping on Saturday.
- I have often done that.
- She is always late.
주요동사 “to be"를 제외하고, 빈도부사는 주요동사 전에 쓰인다.

- 9 -
Occasionally, sometimes, often, frequently and usually can also go at the beginning or end
of a sentence:
- Sometimes we go the mountains.
- I play tennis occasionally.
Occasionally, sometimes, often, frequently 와 usually는 문장의 처음과 끝에 쓰이기도 한다.

Rarely and seldom can also go at the end of a sentence. (often with "very")
- I see my friends rarely.
- John eats vegetables very seldom.
Rarely 와 seldom은 종종 “very"와 함께 문장의 끝에 쓰이기도 한다.

Example 1

Hawaii is one of the most visited countries in the world. Europeans and Americans
alike usually visit Hawaii during winter time in their countries. Since it is a tropical
country, it never gets too cold in Hawaii. It rains occasionally but most of the time,
the sky is clear. Hawaii is always regarded as the "Aloha Island". "Aloha" which
means "hello" or "welcome" often reflects the warmth of the island. You will seldom
see unfriendly faces and you will never miss the breathtaking sights around it.

Example 2

My friends and I usually meet on weekends. We always see to it that we spend time
with each other after a long week of studying. We like biking around the countryside
and occasionally, we explore the mountainsides as well. We never tried camping
along the mountainside like what other people do because it will not be safe if we go
on our own. Sometimes, we go on a picnic and then we go home before sunset. We
seldom try other things like watching videos or movies. Maybe it's good if we often
change our routines so we can enjoy our weekends more.

LINKING VERBS (연결동사)

A linking verb is a verb which links or establishes a relationship between the

subject and a term in the predicate which describes or renames the subject.
It does not show action, but, rather, it links.
The common linking verbs are be, appear, become, feel, seem, smell, taste,
and sound.

연결동사는 주어와 진술해주는 단어를 이어주거나 관계를 성립시키는 역할을

한다. 행동이나 동작을 보여주기보다는 이어주는 역할을 한다.
일반적인 연결동사로는 Be 동사, appear, become, feel, seem, smell, taste와
sound 가 있다.

Tips
*Be 동사
대표적인 연결 동사중에 Be 동사로는 am is/are was/were 가 있다.

Linking verb 에 대해서...

One way of testing for a linking verb is to replace the verb with the appropriate form
of seem.
If the sentence is still saying pretty much the same thing, the verb is a linking verb.
연결동사를 구분하는 한 가지 방법은, 보여 지는 대로의 적합한 형태로 대체하는 것이다.
문장이 거의 같은 것을 얘기할 때, 대부분의 동사는 연결동사이다.
예를 들어,
Action Verb : He tasted the ice cream. (action)
Linking Verb : The ice cream tasted good.
(Tasted is used to help good describe the subject.)
동작을 설명하는 동사는 행위를 얘기하고 있지만, 연결해주는 동사는 물건이 보여 지는
대로 묘사하는데 쓰인다.

Maui : Let us check our itinerary for tomorrow's hiking.

Gerald : Ok people, written on this list are the things that you need to bring.
The hike from the jump-off point to the peak of the mountain will take us
about two and a half hours. Do you have any questions?
Nina : Why do we need to bring lots of water?
Maui : Because there is no water source at the top of the mountain.
You're not just going to use your water for drinking.
It is also used for cleaning your plates and dishes and it is also used to cook
the rice and soup.

Gerald : It is for emergency purposes.
When someone is lost, you just blow your whistle.
It is less exhausting than screaming for help.

yourself when climbing, hold on to trees, stones or ropes when we reach the
steepest part of the mountain. Oh, and don't forget to bring your flashlights
and extra batteries. Are there any more questions?
