Monsters in America

Chapter 4 Part 1:

Component 1: Annotated Reflection

Aliens

Perhaps our own beliefs about monsters and their intractable nature help to produce the

monsters the monsters we fear the most (p.164). The cold war culture in America represented

anxiety to the people who were affected by the war. It caused fear and panic to the people who

were not American natives. For the foreigners who were in America including the African slaves,

they were very oppressed by the white people. The cold war created classes of people and this

made the Americans think that they had fully realized their dream. This perhaps was not the case

since they created the cold war which later came to haunt them. The public is so suspicious of

whatever the government introduces as well as the advancements in the technology. Guest for so

much knowledge has landed the American country in many problems which are face today. All

these inventions in the new technology will result in something that will make mankind perish

without redemption. The otherness of the monster can embody the sum of all fears but also an

escape from fear (p.131). Aliens and the new inventions can either be our doom or redeem us

from the challenges that we face in the modern life.

American assumes self righteousness status and pretends to end atrocities that effect Americans

so as to end the anxiety in people but that is not the case as they only put a show but not solve
the issue at hand appropriately. They only teach their citizens to love their country and give a

blind eye to the real issues that are underlying. The reason as to why Americans create many

horror movies is to mask its own monstrosities or monsters exist which interpret American

culture.

I think that the writer is more aggressive than effective in this book. It is more breathy than depth

and leaves me with the question on how monsters in America are any different from those of the

nations. The writer does not bring any new idea that people do not know of.

Component 2: summary

Aliens are the theme of this chapter. The cold war which was geared by America forged a

paranoid logy advancement. They innovated sophisticated weapons which they used during the

war. These weapons triggered fear in people who were no longer sure of their security.

The cold war by America with other nations also endangered the safety of the Americans where

they lived each day not knowing what would happen the following day. Other nations that were

warring with the American government during the cold war gave threats which the government

responded by creating weapons that they would use incase war evoked out.

Most technology advancements have originated from America and there have been both positive

and negative impacts of these technologies. Sophisticated gadgets and machines have been

created, and people from the government have always ended up misusing them for their own

good placing blames on other nations so as to find a reason to attack them. Massive war weapons

like machine guns, bombs as well as biological weapons were made for use during the Second

World War which was engineered by the cold war which was going on between America and

other nations.
With all these advancements from the technology which were used by the government, people

lost trust with the government and became suspicious of every move by the government. The

same body that was supposed to protect them now endangered their lives and made them not to

be sure of their tomorrow. The aim of government to create all those weapons was to protect the

people of American but in doing that they created another monster of fear within the people.
