Read Between the Lines

Do HR managers know how to read between the lines?
A lot of prospective employees know how to talk their way through an interview. But do HR
managers know how to read between the lines?

Why did you leave your last job?

What they tell you: I felt my talents and abilities were underutilized.
What they really mean: I am compressed to what ROLE I was in to actually no JOB

What are your weaknesses?

What they tell you: I’m a workaholic. I just don’t know when to put down my work.
What they really mean: I can’t concentrate for more than five minutes, hate all forms of authority

Tips To 1. Show Respect
To gain respect, you first must show it. People often mirror the behaviors that
Earn The they see and experience around them - so you must 'walk the talk'. Treat your
Respect of staff like adults, not inferiors. Be ready to listen to their questions and concerns
about their job. Invite your team's input in making decisions which affect them,
Your Team and then act on it. Let them know you value their contribution.

2. Demonstrate Leadership
Strong leadership, that's firm but fair, is required to inspire your employees to
trust and follow you. Executive Coach Mark Coulson said, "Leaders who are worthy
of respect have the judgment to know the right thing to do; the integrity to do it;
the character to stand up to those who don't; and the courage to stop those who
won't"[4]. A word of caution: don't confuse strong leadership with fear. A
dictatorial management style is a sure fire way to push your employees out the

14
door.

3. Impart Vision
Mark Willes, Former Chair and CEO of the US Times Mirror Company said, "People
will work for money, but they will die for something they believe in deeply. They
will give their all for a cause to which they are committed. If a leader is to lead,
he or she must kindle the passion of the organization, give energy rather than take
it away, and help people feel purpose."

Employees respect leaders who give them more information than they need,
rather than less.[5] Jim Collins, in his bestselling book 'Built to Last - Successful
Habits of Visionary Companies' suggests one way that highly successful companies
impart vision is through the establishment and communication of a BHAG (a 'Big
Hairy Audacious Goal'). General Electric's BHAG, for example, was to "Become No.
1 or No. 2 in every market we serve and revolutionize this company to have the
speed and agility of a small enterprise." Collins says: "A BHAG engages people - it
reaches out and grabs them in the gut. It is tangible, energizing, highly focused.
People "get it" right away; it takes little or no explanation". By giving employees a
challenge to strive for, and focusing all efforts on the achievement of this goal,
employees can gain greater respect for Management and become more engaged in
the organization’s daily activities.

4. Be Professional
Model the kind of professional behavior you expect from your staff. It's often the
small things that leave the biggest impression. Be on time every day and don't
make a habit of leaving early. Don't belittle employees. Don't lie to them or swear
at them. Be fair and impartial at all times. Don't blur personal and professional
boundaries - keep a healthy amount of distance between you and them so that you
can remain objective and not be accused of bias or favoritism. Try and avoid
making too many personal calls at work and don't ask subordinates to do anything
that is not work-related.[6]Although often taken for granted, these behaviors form
the basic 'rules of the game' that must be adhered to by any Manager serious about
being perceived as a professional operator.

5. Invest in Your People

An ongoing Gallup study reported recently that only 26% of the working population
is fully engaged (loyal and productive), 55% are not engaged (just putting in time),
and 19% are actively disengaged (unhappy and spreading their

6. Demand Accountability
Nothing saps team morale faster than a leader who allows poor performers to get
away with it without consequence. Managers who address performance issues

head on are seen as strong leaders and command greater respect.

Tips To 7. Be Direct
Earn The According to a study conducted by the HR consulting firm Towers-Perrin, 94% of
employees say there is a need for greater openness and candor in organizational
Respect of communication from leaders.[8] The same report also found that employee's
Your Team preferred mode of communication was face-to-face meetings with their manager.
Use voicemail and email sparingly when sharing anything that could be perceived
as change, ambiguous or hurtful. As often as possible, communicate directly and
in person with team members around sensitive issues.

8. Be Human
Remember that your employees have a life outside work and be prepared to be
flexible when staff members go through personal hardship. The respected
manager shows compassion, listens and makes allowances where possible. Studies
show that workers produce more when they feel their bosses empathize with them
as individuals.[9]

9. Give Recognition
Don't take credit for something your employee has done or pass off their work or
ideas as your own. Team members will respect you if they know they can trust you
to recognize and reward them for doing their job well. Conversely, they will lose
respect for you if they feel you are merely using them as a stepping stone in your
own career.

10. Get Into The Trenches Once In A While

A common complaint from employees, especially at performance review time, is
that their manager does not know what they do. Work side by side with your staff
and your perspective about their job may change, as will their perspective of you.
Pitch in when you can. A little willingness to get your hands dirty will reinforce
your understanding of your employee's daily challenges and help them see you in a
more positive light.

Conclusion

In essence, the key to earning the respect of your staff is to treat them the way you
would like to be treated. Once you have their respect, you will benefit from their loyalty.
They in turn will know you care about them and will be likely to be committed to the
business and to produce high quality work. It's worth remembering that if you command
respect, people will beat a path to your door; demand obedience, and sooner or later
they'll head for the exits.

the home safety councils top ten as starting point to review your home and make sure you
have the basic safety measures in place. June is the perfect time to start working with
your family to tackle one safety project a week. Making safety an activity for the entire
family is a great way to teach your children important home safety lessons.

Top Ten Tips

Is your home safe for your family? Follow these 10 tips from the HSE –Department to
protect the people you love!

Prevent Falls

 Install grab bars in the tub and shower. Use non-slip mats.

 Have bright lights over stairs and steps and on landings. Keep
stairs clear of clutter.

where children can’t reach them. Use child safety locks.

17
 Use small stools to take dangerous materials, do not stretch

Orientation To Libya
In this series we will orienting you about LIBYA and its economic Power.

In this month we are discussing on LIBYA Set up.

SET UP

Libya is currently enjoying the benefits of a growing economy, refreshed political and
economic ties, and a new direction that stems from the government’s gradual moves to
step out of its role as a distributor of wealth in favour of more limited responsibilities as a
regulator and social policymaker.

Domestically, Libya has long enjoyed stability and a high level of political participation,
though not through traditional representative democratic processes. Rather, the
country’s political institutions take the form of consultative bodies at the local, regional
and national levels.

The government has acted to successfully avoid the troubles of its neighbours, many of
which have been battling extremism and social unrest for decades, by encouraging open
discourse about social issues and allowing religious freedoms. 2008 saw significant
commitments of foreign direct investment (FDI) by Italy and Russia and the resumption of
political and economic ties with the US.

Libya is now among its fastest-growing markets for importing – mostly energy sector
equipment, cars, agricultural goods and aircraft.

We will orient you on the following in our Employees News letter- Prerna.DS Employees

Clock is Ticking
How do you react to deadlines? How would you feel if someone said "Hurry
up, the clock is ticking and we've got to get this completed!"? How well do you
cope with stress? Isn't it amazing to notice how radically your experience of
passing time changes depending on the circumstances, with little correlation
to the steady flow of time as shown on a clock.

Have you ever sat in a waiting room with a clock on the wall that went "tick
tock, tick tock" over and over and over again, until such time that you either
wanted to run out of the room, or throw the clock out the window? This kind
of experience is especially excruciating when you are waiting for something
that you really are not looking forward to, like a treatment from your dentist.
In particular, when you are feeling stressed out you experience time
distortion. In some instances like when waiting for your dentist, one minute of
clock time seems to take forever. At other times when you are working
towards a deadline, time appears to slip away without your knowing where it
went, and you are left wondering why you are accomplishing so little.

Waiting for a flight that is twenty minutes late, when that flight is bringing
your loved one back to you, is very different than getting to the Air Terminal
early with your loved one and waiting twenty minutes for the same flight to
take your loved one away from you. The flight is the same, the terminus is the
same, your loved one is the same, and the time on the clock is the same, but
somehow, your emotional experience of "twenty minutes" is quite different.

It is important for each of us to understand how the fixed passage of time as

measured by a clock, has little to do with our emotional experience of time.
Rather than being under the illusion that time rules our life, we will do well to
recognize that it is our emotional experience and our mindset that determines
how we relate to the ticking of the clock. Restrict your breathing and tense
your muscles and time invariably will appear to speed up. You relate to time
according to your expectations of what will transpire. Expect that you will be
successful and the clock on the wall appears to offer you a bit more time.
Expect the worst and you will have difficulty keeping up.

What can you do to have a healthier perspective in regard to time? The first
thing you can do is breathe slowly and deeply. When you slow down your body
clock, the clock on the wall appears to slow down along with you. The next
thing you can do is check in with your body. If you create a feeling of
expansion in your body, by aligning your posture and releasing your muscles,
time will appear to expand somewhat as well. Furthermore, you can notice
your surroundings and extend your awareness out into the space around you.
When you extend your awareness to take in the wide range of sights and
sounds taking place in your local environment you will also extend your
concept of time. Lastly, realize that with any luck, you will have tomorrow to
accomplish what you were not able to accomplish today. Every new day,
brings new opportunities for appreciating your life and the people you care
about.

Lateral Thinking Puzzles, unlike most puzzles, are inexact. In a sense, they are a hybrid
between puzzles and storytelling. In each puzzle, some clues to a scenario are given,
but the clues don't tell the full story. Your job is to fill in the details and complete the
story. Obviously, there is usually more than one answer to any given puzzle, but, in
general, only one solution is truly satisfying.

You can try solving these puzzles on your own -- that's certainly a legitimate way to go
about this -- but usually you can have more fun if you involve other people. The way
this works is, you look at the answer (maybe you want to try the puzzle on your own
first!), then read just the clues to your friends. Your friends must determine the
answer by asking questions about it, which you may answer only with yes, no, or
doesn't matter. You can adjust the difficulty of the puzzle by varying the initial clues,
throwing in red herrings, and so forth.

The scenarios given on this page are realistic, if unlikely. The clues can all be taken at
face value, although that's not to say their implications can't be misleading.

A man lives on the twelfth floor of an apartment building. Every morning he

takes the elevator down to the lobby and leaves the building. In the evening,

it was raining that day -- he goes back to his floor directly. Otherwise, he goes
to the tenth floor and walks up two flights of stairs to his apartment.
