Using Videos in the Classroom

Stephen, S. (2015). Journal of Financial Education. Enhancing the Learning Experience in
Finance Using Online Video Clips. 41 (1), 103-116.
This article discuss using video clips to help in learning about finance. It (finance) can be
a subject that is difficult to explain unless students have real world situations to apply the finance
learning experience. Students think that if they just understand the terms in finance then they
will be fine. Actually students need to have real world examples of finance and short video clips
to help them understand the subject matter easier. The video clips used must be relevant to the
finance objectives being taught and link specifically to what is being taught.
Video clips increase student excitement and help students stay engaged in and out of the
classroom (Stephen, 2015). Videos can enhance student learning by bringing clarity to the
subject matter and by incorporating real world situations in the classroom-especially when
discussing finance theories and concepts. The results of this research is positive when it comes
to the use of online video clips. Most students find the online video clips interesting and
enhances learning. It makes learning fun and helps students grasp the concept of finance easier,
The videos need to be short clips that deal specifically with the objectives being taught in that
area.
I agree with the use of short video clips in the classroom for education. Video clips
should be directly related to the subject matter being taught. Students must be able to understand
the content in order to be successful. Video clips that present real life situations for students to
experience helps students master the concepts.
Sherer, P., Shea, T. (2011). College Teaching. Using Online Video to Support Learning and
Engagement. 59 (2), 56-59.
This article discusses using online videos to support student learning. There are many
tools for teaching and keeping students engaged and interested. New technologies such as
videos, podcasting, wikis and blogs can be very helpful in creating a positive learning
environment. Most students are familiar with technology and feel comfortable using it in the
classroom setting.
One of the tools used for learning purposes in the classroom is YouTube. Students can
create their own videos, share videos and watch videos created by instructors. Students that
create their own videos about a subject matter can demonstrate more understanding of what they
are learning. Also, students have more control over their own learning as well. Students can be
assigned to search for videos and write a response to the video and/or find videos that pertain to
the subject matter. Although videos are a great tool to use for learning, students still need to be
able to talk, listen, read and write and apply what they are learning. Videos afford that
opportunity by offering personalized and interactive learning participation. Videos found on
other websites can also be more current than using textbooks and provide relevant for the subject
matter.
I think that using videos such as YouTube is a great idea. Students creating their own
video is a great way to ensure students understand the material. Teachers who create videos for
the students to watch are enhancing their learning. The videos help support the learning
objectives mapped out for the online class.
Hughes, G. (2009). College Quarterly. Using Videos to Bring Lecture to the Online Classroom.
12(1), 10.
This article discusses using videos to help support online learning. Distance learning is
becoming more popular and easier for students and instructors. But the face to face contact-
traditional classroom learning is still needed in some ways. When instructors use videos to teach
content it helps students in a variety of ways. First, students are tied down to a specific time
frame to attend a class and the information from class can be reviewed and revisited at the
students convenience. Students can also connect better with the teacher when videos are used.
Videos can also be used to demonstrate a particular skill needed for the class. Students can read
about the skill but it really helps when students can have a visual example as well. It helps when
teachers have diverse learners in a classroom setting.
This article discussed a study about using videos for the lecture part of the online
classroom. The study examined insights learned from making instructional videos of online
classes. Although nothing takes the place of face to face teaching, videos of instructors can be
helpful in that it is flexible for both student and instructor. Some students prefer to ask questions
face to face but only less than 25% of the students attended the offered session (Hughes, 2009).
The software and equipment used was a newer laptop, affordable software and possibly a
green screen so instructors can record lectures in their home/office. Also, a copy of the lecture
notes can be given to the students so that students can use more than one learning style if need be
(audio, visual, kinesthetic). The video for the online class does not have to be perfect. The
videos are helpful in providing information to students without having the pressure of being in a
certain place or a certain time. Students and instructors can be in the comfort of their own home
or office and still receive/give the information at their own pace.
I agree with using the videos in an online classroom format. I like having notes in front
of me but it is helpful to watch a video and connect with the instructor on some level.
Connecting a face with a name on paper makes learning more personable to me.
This assignment helped clarify how important videos in the classroom are and how well they can
be used in the classroom. Videos help keep students focused on the assignments and actually
help clarify points and ideas about a subject. Using videos benefits both the student and the
teacher by allowing students to learn at their own pace and teachers to possibly make certain
points more clear and find innovative ways to reach all students regardless of learning styles
and/or abilities. Through this assignment, I have been made more aware of how important
videos can be for not only elementary students but high school/college students as well. I am
taking a class now where the instructor makes videos for us to watch about the content of the
course and we are also given the notes as well. It is helpful to hear and see the instructor talk
about the assignments as I read the material as well. Videos are very important in todays fast
pace, technology filled world and in order to reach all students, it must be used in a classroom
that plans to have successful learners.
