I chose this artifact as an example of the use of communication skills under the

Essential Employability Skills criteria. (Ministry of Ontario, 2009) This newsletter was an
assignment I completed in my Office Administration program at Durham College. The
purpose of this assignment was to create a multi-column newsletter, in MS Word, per
industry standards by locating, selecting, and organizing information which was given in
the complex instructions. The assignment asked for appropriate technology to be
applied in a systematic approach which reinforced the importance of following
directions.
The assignment was given as a scenario based on the information provided. You were
an administrative assistant who was asked by her boss to create a newsletter outlining
upcoming employee workshops to enhance employee morale. The assignment was to
be formatted with related graphics, including a caption, and fully accessible. Effective
communication was used in the creation of this document by communicating in a clear,
concise, and correct manner to the audience in the scenario provided.
I believe the skills gained from this assignment will be useful and transferrable to the
creation of a professional document. I feel that this artifact is a competent example of
the use of communication which will be important in a future administrative role.
