Cathy Watkins reported.
Discussion: The reasoning behind switching cedar mulch
to hardwood mulch was discussed. Hardwood mulch,
unlike cedar mulch, gives nutrients to the soil, allows
water and air to reach the plant, and breaks down. This
year the Ecology Committee plans on overturning the
current mulch and getting rid of the mounds of mulch
around the base of the trees. Next year hardwood mulch
will be phased in for the common areas.
The map and time lines outlined in #4 have not been
created as of yet but are more of an outline of what the
Committee is looking to accomplish. Also, butterfly plants
were discussed and an article will be in the April Herald.
In the past there was discussion on new signs being put on
both the curb carts and the pet waste and loose trash bins.
The signs for the pet waste and loose trash will be printed
in-house once the label maker is fixed. Due to the cost of
the signs for the curb carts, 15 were purchased this month
and 15 will be purchased next month. A recommendation
for a sandwich sign to be put out and rotated among the
courts stating the trash rules was also given.
Michelle asked about #8 and if it should state that invasive
removal be brought to the Committees attention. Cathy
replied that it will state that in the form.
Board Action: Motion by Michelle Todorov, support by
Kathy Baldwin, to approve the Ecology Committee report
of February 7, 2017 and change the recommendation to
reflect #6. All in favor. Motion passed.
Community Social Verbal Report:
Michelle Todorov reported.
Discussion: Last year the Committee had an Easter
pancake breakfast and did not do the Valentine luncheon.
This year since there was a Valentine luncheon there will
not be a pancake breakfast but there will be a book reading
at 11:30 a.m. and an Easter egg hunt at noon on Sunday,
April 9th. Also, Bunco night is on Saturday, March 4th at
7:00 p.m.
Sandy commented that the last Bunco night was a lot
of fun and to please consider coming if you can. Peggy
complimented the Social Committee on the wonderful,
free Valentine luncheon that was given. There was a lot
of food to go around and everyone who attended enjoyed
themselves.
Joe reminded the residents to please remove any remaining
holiday decorations.
The Meeting adjourned at 7:35 p.m.

SUBJECTS DISCUSSED:
1. Memorial Service. A memorial service will be held at the Clubhouse for Sally Rigo on April 22. Although Sally was not a
resident at the time of her death, she provided outstanding service to the Association during her many years here. A mo-
tion to waive the rental fee passed unanimously.

2. Request for Exception to Rental Regulation. Although the regulations do not allow the use of helium balloons, an excep-
tion was requested for a child's birthday party in the Highland Room. The Committee voted unanimously to recommend
this exception with the understanding that if a problem results, any cost associated with the remedy be deducted from the
security deposit.

3. Renovation update. Everyone present was encouraged to attend at 6:00 p.m., February 7.

4. New Update. Judy Nakdimen was elected secretary.

5. Library Maintenance. Members will meet at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 18, to shelve books.

RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE BOARD: (1) Waive the rental fee for Sally Rigo Memorial Service on April 22,
2017. (2) Allow helium balloons for birthday party on March 19, restricted to the Highland Room with the under-
standing that any cost resulting be deducted from the security deposit.

SUBJECTS DISCUSSED:

1. The former Pet Pail pedestals have not yet been removed. There is no need for them any more with the advent of the corral
carts replacing the Pet Pails.

2. It was brought up placing a survey page in the Herald asking co-owners if they had any concern about their smoke/carbon
monoxide detector(s) functionality and would they like someone to check them out and replace if necessary by a resident
handy person for only a token fee plus the price of replacement unit(s) if necessary.

3. Put together a survey page in Herald to determine interest in a CPR Training Session.

4. Court Liaisons should talk up with neighbors about updating their personal information if it has changed for the new Direc-
tory. There is a directory update form in the January Herald or you can obtain an update form at the Clubhouse.

5. Stickers indicating what the trash carts are to be used forPet Waste & Loose Trash are to be produced in-house. Court
Liaisons should try to see that the trash carts are placed within the corrals so that co-owners are able to easily reach them if
the trash service has not done so.

6. We now have three courts without a liaisonAqueduct, Iron Gate, and Dorothy Gayand two courts needing temporary
backup. Iron Gate has gone six months without a volunteer.

Crabapples
Flowering crabapples are among the most popular ornamental trees. Few woody plants
offer so many all-season values as these trees. Also, crabapples support over 311 species of
moths, butterflies and insects, while the fruit is
favored by many birds, deer and other wildlife.

Crabapples are among the showiest of spring

bloomers. The flowers can be pink, white or red
and the open blossoms may be a white to dark
purplish red.

While the foliage is attractive throughout the

summer, they do not have attractive fall colors.
The apples provide the fall interest and can
range in size from to 2 inches with color
from bright red to purpled and yellow to orange.
The apples begin to color in August and last
through October.

In winter, crabapples have a very distinguished

shape and bark which provide great interest.
The variety of shapes is shown in the attached
diagram.

After they become established, crabapples

require minimal care, primarily removing
branches that cross or rub against each other as
well as removal of the water spouts.

Crabapples and the cultivars are susceptible to

some diseases: apple scab, fire blight, powdery mildew. The modern cultivators are
resistant to these diseases.
14
Recommended crabapple trees rated excellent/good for disease resistance against
scab, re blight, cedar apple rust and powdery mildew.

Save
Our
Woods
One of the wonderful features of
Highland Lakes is our woodlands.
They make many areas around
Highland Lakes like an off-the-beaten-path experience.

Unfortunately, our woodlands are being affected by some ecologically

damaging invasive plants, namely common buckthorn and garlic mustard.
If left unchecked they are capable of eliminating the native plants and trees
of our area from our woodlands. Buckthorn removals and garlic mustard
pulls are planned for in our woods:
Sunday, April 30th, 10 AM to 1 PM
Sunday, May 21st, 9 AM to 12 PM

If you like being in our woods with a purpose, please join us for some
Highland Lakes comradery and see how much we can accomplish towards
further preserving our woodlands. See April & May issues of the Herald for
particulars.

Southern Ham and Bean Soup

Ingredients:
3 tablespoons unsalted butter teaspoon dried thyme
1 onion, chopped fine 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
3 garlic cloves, minced 2 cups frozen chopped green beans
1 pound ham steak, chopped thin
2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
2 (16-ounce) cans white beans, drained and rinsed

Preparation:

1. Melt butter in Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Cook onion, celery, garlic, ham, sugar,
thyme, and half of white beans, covered, until vegetables are soft, about 8 minutes.

2. Using potato masher, mash beans and vegetables to rough paste. Stir in remaining white beans
and broth. Simmer, covered, until slightly thickened, about 10 minutes. Add green beans and
cook until heated through, about 2 minutes. Serve.

Kitchen Hint:
No butter? 2 cups of evaporated milk beaten slowly will turn into one pound of butter. Pour into
pan and chill. Or, beat one cup of buttermilk, cup salad oil and one teaspoon of salt into one
pound of margarine. Best of Helpful Kitchen Hints by Mary Ellen Pinkham
