Introduction

ALJ Food Products is a company that manufactures various types of food products,
mainly Kaong and Nata de Coco. The companys factory is situated at Kamagong Corner
Catmon Street, Nova Tierra Village, Davao City. The companys name is from the initials of the
owners name; Alicia Lao Jubay. Before the business was established in 2006, AJL was only a
supplier of raw Nata to a business partner. However, the company went down causing AJL to
experience some loss. Because of this incident, AJL decided to run their own food manufacturing
business.

Before the manufacturing the product, ALJ purchases raw Kaong from farmers in
Baracatan, Toril, Matina Pangi, Agusan and Sta. Cruz, and raw Nata from suppliers in the city.
They purchase these raw ingredients for P35-P40 per kilo. ALJ also purchases their packaging
materials from various suppliers namely JLV Marketing for the jars, Ms. Lopez Printing Press for
their labels, Monte Carlo Cap Seal Services for the seals, Unipro Managing Corporation for the
metal caps and Mingas Gasul for their liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

The companys manufacturing process is fairly simple. They purchase the raw materials
and resources for packaging from their suppliers. After which, raw ingredients are cleaned and
mixed with sweetener and food colouring before placing into jars. After that, the jars are labelled,
sealed, and packed into a box and ready for delivery.

ALJ Food Products is a made-to-order and made-to-stock company, depending on its

customers. They provide make-to-order services, primarily, on their restaurant or hotel
customers, like Vikings and Waterfront (Insular Hotel). Meanwhile, they provide make-to-stock
services for their clients who sell their products in stores. ALJs products reach different
distributors in many provinces like Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley, Agusan, South Cotabato,
Kidapawan, Surigao del Sur, Digos and Malita.
