Steps:

1.InstallBI4.0yourexistingXI3.xorXIR2servers.YouwillhavetwoversionsoftheBIplatformrunningonthesamehardware,somakesurethatyouspecifyuniqueCentralManagementServer
(CMS)cluster.
2.CreateauniquenameandportnumberforyourBI4.0deployment(otherthan6400)toavoidconflictsbetweendeployments.
3.Usetheupgrademanagementtooltoupgradeyourcontent.
4.AfterBI4.0issuccessfullydeployed,uninstallXI3.xorXIR2SP2.

3.Usingtheupgrademanagementtool
OnceyouhaveBI4.0installed,youarereadytobeginpreparationsforrunningtheupgrademanagementtool.TheupgrademanagementtoolisanewtoolinBI4.0thatallowsyoutoupgradeyourBIcontent
fromXIR3.xandXIR2SP2environments.Aftercompletingthepreparations,youcanruntheupgrademanagementtool.

Preparingtheupgrademanagementtool
PerformthefollowingtasksinyourexistingXI3.x,XIR2SP2deployment:

Stopalloftheservers,exceptfortheCentralManagementServer(CMS),andtheFileRepositoryServer(FRS).

PerformthefollowingtasksinyournewBI4.0deployment:

Ifyouareusingthirdpartyauthentication(AD,LDAP,SAP)youmustconfiguretheauthenticationpluginintheCMCinyournewBI4.0deploymentandmapalltheusergroups(AD,LDAP)orroles
(SAP)thatyouareplanningtoexportfromyourexistingdeployment.TheupgrademanagementtoolcanonlyimportgroupsandusersthatarealreadyconfiguredandmappedintheBI4.0destination
system.
Stopalloftheservers(includingallJobServers)inthedestinationdeployment,exceptfortheCMS,FRS,andtheReportApplicationServer(ifyouplantoupgradeCrystalReportsdocuments).

Therearesomeconsiderationstohaveinmindwhendecidingwheretoruntheupgrademanagementtool:

TheupgrademanagementtoolisavailableasaGUIinterfaceforWindowsandasacommandlineinterfaceforUnix/Linux.
WhenyouruntheGUIupgrademanagementtoolyouaregiventheoptionofdoingacompleteupgradeoranincrementalupgrade.(Acomparisonofcompletevsincrementalupgradesisoutlinedinthe
sectionbelow.)Ifyouareusingthecommandline,youcanonlydoacompleteupgrade.
Theupgrademanagementtoolrequiresthatthefeaturesthatyouaregoingtoupgradeareavailableonthemachinewhereyouarerunningit.Thismeansthatyouneedthecomponentsinstalledwiththe
differentBIplatformservers.
YouneedtoruntheBI4.0Servertoinstalltheupgrademanagementtool.Theserverinstallrequiresa64bitOS.
UMTreadsfromsource,savesonthelocalHardDiskandwritestothetarget.
TheOS'sTempdirectoryshouldhaveatleast10GBfreediskspace.Dontrunoutoftempdiskspace!
GreatlyreduceupgradetimebysettingJavaHeaptouseasmuchRAMaspossibleinthecommandline(intheshortcut)forUMT.

Workspace workspacestobeupgraded:

VoyagerworkspacescanonlybeupgradedfromBusinessObjects3.1orlatertoBI4.0
Connectionpromptsarenotsupportedduringconversion.ThismeansthatyoumustchangetheconnectiontoeithertoSSOorPredefinedinthesourcesystem.Afterthe
upgrade,youcanchangetheconnectiontopromptinthetargetsystem.
OLAPConnectionsmustberecreatedinBI4.0,beforerunningtheupgrademanagementtool.ThenewconnectionnamemustbeidenticaltotheBusinessObjects3.1OLAP
connectionotherwisethevoyagerworkspacewon'tbeupgraded.
ForVoyagerofSAPBW,mandatoryvariableswithoutdefaultvalueswillfail.Toavoidthis,modifythequeryintheQueryDesignertospecifyadefaultvaluepriortoupgrade.
Afterupgrading,youcansetitbacktotheoriginalsetting

Xcelsius Xcelsiusdashboardsaremigratedbytheupgrademanagementtoolastheyare.TheywillcontinuetoworkfineandcanbeopenedinSAPDashboards.
Considerationsaboutupgradingdashboards:

IfyouhaveembeddedURLsinXcelsiusmodelsandFlashfiles,theseURLSarenotupgraded.YouwillneedtomanuallyupdatetheembeddedURLaftertheupgrade.
HardcodedreferencestoservernamessuchaswebserviceURLsorhostnamesarenotupgraded.Hardcodedreferencesrequiremanualchangeafterupgrading.
IfyouwishtoconvertthemtotheSAPDashboardformat,youcanopentheminSAPDashboardsandusetheoptiontoconvert.Thiswillconvertthedashboardtothenew
formatandcreatethenewFlashbehindthescenes.

QaaWS TheupgrademanagementtoolmigratestheQaaWSandUNV.ItisbasedonBI4.0.WhenrunningtheupgrademanagementtoolyouwillbepromptedfortheTargetWeb

AccordingtothePAMforXI3.1SP7,SAPNetWeaver7.3,7.31SP4+aresupported.ButthelargerissuearetherisksremainingontheXI3.1platform,whichhasbeenoutofpatchsupportfor
overayear.Forexample,XI3.1isNOTcompatiblewithWindows10.Eventuallyyouwillbebittenbyoperatingsystem,database,orbrowsercompatibility.

Also,theBI4platform,nowcurrentlyatversion4.2,hassomeimprovedconnectivityoptionsforBWusers.
