Screencast #1

Tinkerplots School Data

The target audience of this screencast would be middle school students, who are
studying statistics and probability. The assignment could be modified for the different
levels of middle school math classes. Higher-level students could be required to go more
in depth with their analysis of the attributes, making this activity functional for any
middle school classroom. This activity would help students make comparisons with data
in a more efficient way than other graphing tools. Students can explore the different
attributes and draw conclusions through their exploration.

Common Core Standards

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSS.ID.B.6
Represent data on two quantitative variables on a scatter plot, and describe how the
variables are related.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.SP.A.1
Construct and interpret scatter plots for bivariate measurement data to investigate patterns
of association between two quantities. Describe patterns such as clustering, outliers,
positive or negative association, linear association, and nonlinear association.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.SP.B.4
Use measures of center and measures of variability for numerical data from random
samples to draw informal comparative inferences about two populations.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.SP.B.3
Informally assess the degree of visual overlap of two numerical data distributions with
similar variabilities, measuring the difference between the centers by expressing it as a
multiple of a measure of variability.

Mathematical Practices

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving

them.
- Students show this by making their initial predictions.

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

- Students show this by using reasoning to examine the graphs and make their
predictions.

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning

of others.
- By having to explain their reasoning for their conclusions, students are displaying
this mathematical practice.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP4 Model with mathematics.
- Students use their graphs to determine why the associated attributes make sense in
the context of the problem.

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically.

- Students use mathematical tools to efficiently explore the data to find correlations.

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP6 Attend to precision.

- By explaining their findings using appropriate mathematical language, students
are attending to precision.

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP7 Look for and make use of structure.

- Students display this by looking for the pattern in the graphs.
