PRECAUTIONS PFP:00001

Precautions for vehicles equipped with SRS airbags and pre-tensioner seat-
belts EGS00099

WARNING:
Before removing and installing the components and the harnesses of air bags and pre-tensioner
seat belts, turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables, and wait at least 3 min-
utes. (To discharge the electricity saved in the additional power circuit in the air bag sensor unit.)
Do not use pneumatic or electric tools to remove and install the components.
When repairing, do not solder the harness of the SRS air bag and pre-tensioner seat belt system.
Make sure that there are no pinched harnesses and no contact with other components.
When checking the SRS air bag and the pre-tensioner seat belt circuit or each system as a compo-
nent, do not use an electric tester such as a circuit tester (to prevent accidental triggering caused
by the weak electric current of a tester).
Do not insert a flat-bladed screwdriver or similar tool into the connectors on air bag module or
pre-tensioner seat belt (to prevent accidental triggering caused by static).
To distinguish from other harnesses, the harness of the SRS air bag and pre-tensioner seat belt
system are identified with a yellow harness connectors.
For safe service operation, refer to SB Seat Belt and SRS Air Bag.
Caution EGS0009A

During disassembly, pay attention to the points below.

Although dustproof device is unnecessary, work in a trash/dust-free place as much as possible.
Before disassembly, clean the outside of the unit.
Keep the work place for disassembly clean, and keep parts away from contamination and foreign material.
Be sure to properly assemble the disassembled parts, following the right order. If work is suspended in the
middle of assembly, place a clean cover over the part.
Use paper towels. Never use cloth shop towels that might leave lint on the cleaned parts.
Clean the disassembled parts (except rubber parts) with kerosene, and remove kerosene by blowing with
air or absorbing with paper towels.
Before assembling, apply Nissan Power Steering Fluid to the O-rings and seals.
Replace the gaskets and O-rings with new ones. Be careful not to damage any O-rings, oil seals, and gas-
kets during assembly.
If the case, rear body, side plate, pulley, rotor, vane, or flow control valve is found scratched after disas-
sembling the steering pump, replace the applicable part.
Mark the area of fluid leak with a white marker for identification.
Seals and copper washers should be replaced every disassembly.

POWER STEERING FLUID

POWER STEERING FLUID PFP:KLF20

Checking Fluid Level EGS0009C

With the engine OFF, check the fluid level.

Check that the fluid level is between MAX and MIN marks
shown on the tank. The fluid level shall not exceed the MAX
mark. Excessive fluid will cause fluid to leak from the cap.
Use appropriate fluid level shown on the tank depending on
HOT or COLD.
HOT : Fluid temperature 50 - 80C (122 - 176F)
COLD : Fluid temperature 0 - 30C (32 - 86F)

SGIA0074J

CAUTION:
Do not overfill.
Recommended fluid is DEXRON TM III or equivalent. Refer to MA-11, "Fluids and Lubricants" .
Checking Fluid Leak EGS0009D

Check hydraulic connections for any leak, crack, damage, connector

looseness, or wear.
1. Run the engine until the fluid temperature reaches 50C to 80C
(122 to 176F) in the reservoir tank, and keep the engine speed
at idle.
2. Turn the steering wheel clockwise and counterclockwise several
times.
3. Turn the steering wheel clockwise (or counterclockwise) until it
reaches the stop, and hold it for five seconds. Check for fluid
leak.
SST836C
CAUTION:
Never hold the steering wheel at the stop in clockwise or counterclockwise direction for 15 sec-
onds or longer. (The pump may be damaged.)
4. If any leak is found on the joint, loosen and retighten the flair nut. Excessive tightening may damage the
O-ring, the washer, or the connector.
Bleeding Hydraulic System EGS0009E

1. Lift up the vehicle.

2. Fill the tank up to the MAX mark. Turn the steering wheel several times from stop to stop. Add fluid if the
fluid level goes down. Repeat this step until there is no fluid decrease and no bubble in the tank.
3. Start the engine and repeat the step above with the engine at idle. Continue the step until no decrease in
the fluid happens.
If air bleeding is not satisfactory, the following symptoms can be observed.
Bubbles are created in the reservoir tank.

Rattling noise can be heard from the oil pump.

Whining noise can be heard from the oil pump.

When the steering wheel is turned slowly or with the vehicle stopped, sound of fluid movement may be heard
from the gear valve and pump. This sound has nothing to do with steering performance or durability.
