Important Please Read First

Please write your name, ID number and date on the first pages of your answer booklet
before starting to solve the questions. Please do not forget to write your name to all loose
pages that you use during the exam.

Please read and understand questions carefully; and then give your answers.

You will get partial credits for your correct portion of the answer, thats why I encourage
you try to answer all the questions. However you need to show your work on the answer
sheet, write clearly if you make assumptions and use charts etc.

There are 4 questions in this booklet, each question is valued equal, the highest mark
that one can get is 100. Please attempt to solve all questions.

You are allowed to use ONE formula sheet (both sides of letter size paper is permitted).
Please contact to instructor before starting your exam if you are not sure whether your
sheet violates the rule.

Calculators are allowed. Important tables and mathematical properties will be provided.

If you have questions during the exam, please raise your hand, and the instructor will
come to you to answer your question.

The exam time is 150 minutes.

Good luck,

1. A cellular network provider uses TDMA system that can operate at Co-channel Signal to
Interference (C-SIR) of 21 dB. Consider the path loss exponent, , equal to 3.

(a) Please find the best value of cluster size N when (i) omnidirectional antenna, (ii)
120 degree sectoring, and (iii) 60 degree sectoring?
(b) If there are 240 full-duplex voice channels are available for the system, and the call
blocking probability of the cellular system is 5 percent, please find traffic intensity
per channel when (i) omnidirectional antenna, (ii) 120 degree sectoring, and (iii) 60
degree sectoring?
(c) If each user makes 1 phone call per two hours and each call last 6 minutes to complete,
how user can be supported per cell when (i) omnidirectional antenna, (ii) 120 degree
sectoring, and (iii) 60 degree sectoring?
(d) Based on your calculations, which system would you prefer to install if you were the
engineer of the cellular company?

2. Please answer the following questions, if the information bits that you like to trasmit are

[1, 0, 0, 1]

(a) Can you write down the OFDM low-pass envelope of OFDM symbol for given infor-
mation sequence?
(b) If the CDMA spreading code is [1, 1, 1, 1] and if you use square pulses with
chip period, draw the CDMA signal before the modulation? Assume bit period is 1
second.
(c) What is the processing gain of CDMA system for the spreading code that you used
in Part B, and how many users simulatenously access to the CDMA system?
(d) Please find a spreading code that is orhogonal to the code given in Part B, which is
[1, 1, 1, 1]?

3. A wireless channel observes two fading amplitudes, a1 = 0.2 and a2 = 1.4 with equal
probabilities.

(a) What is probability of error for binary phase shift keying (BPSK) system if the
average SNR (Eb /N0 ) is 20 dB?
(b) If the channel does not observe fading, what would be the average SNR to achieve
bit error rate that you calculated in part A?
(c) Suppose receiver is modified and number of antennas is increased from 1 to 3, and
all three antennas observe the fading independently. A device measures the fading
amplitudes (SNRs) of each antenna and utilizes signal coming from antenna whose
fading amplitude (SNR) is the highest (also called Selective Combining). In that
case, what would be the probability of error if SNR is 20 dB?

4. Suppose QPSK modulation scheme. Modulation amplitude is A.

(a) What is the amplitude A if your demodulator symbol error rate is 103 if the noise
power N0 = 0.1?
(b) If you would like to improve spectrum efficiency and would like to use 16-PSK mod-
ulation scheme, what would be new bandwidth efficiency?
(c) In order reach 103 symbol error rate with 16-PSK modulation, what would be the
amplitude of the signal for the receiver?
(d) Can you compare the power efficiency of these two modulation schemes?
