SAFE Work Procedure (SWP)

Personal Protective Equipment or other required equipment or other safety considerations: Step
ladders can be no more than 6 m high and are to be used for short term work only. Do not stand on top 2
rungs unless the step ladder has a railed platform
Hazards: Awkward postures and possible forceful exertions when moving/carrying ladder
Note: This task may expose workers to musculoskeletal injury (MSI) risks. Signs and symptoms include pain, burning, numbness,
tingling, swelling, loss of movement or strength in a body part.
Education and training prerequisites: Training in-house by individuals, experienced and
e.g. instructions or other SWPs knowledgeable with the tool. Part of annual equipment list
review.

Steps to be taken to complete task safely:

1 Inspect step ladder for defects prior to each use. Notify Supervisor of any defects and remove
from use.
2 Place stepladder at right angles to work, with either the front or back of the steps facing the
work. Ensure stepladder is 1 m shorter than the highest point you have to reach
If required to do work in passageways, doorways, driveways or other locations where a person
or vehicle can hit it, erect suitable barriers or lock doors shut until work is complete.
3 Open shelf and stepladder spreaders ensuring they are locked. Never climb a stepladder that is
leaning against a wall.
4 Check stability. Ensure that all four ladder feet are on firm, level and dry ground. Never place a
stepladder on boxes, unstable bases or scaffolds to gain additional height
5 Face stepladder when climbing up or down. Keep body centered between side rails.

6 Maintain a firm grip. Use both hands in climbing.

7 Do not stand on top 2 steps unless it has railed platform at top

8 Do not extend any part of your body, except for arms, beyond the side rails of the step ladder
9 Keep stepladder close to work. Avoid pushing or pulling to the side of stepladder. Do not
overreach. Move ladder when needed. Do not shift or walk stepladder when standing on it.
Never push or pull a stepladder sideways. It is less stable in those directions.

Responsibilities, Completion and Review


Management and workers to ensure all duties performed in accordance to training, established health and safety
regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (e.g. utilizing personal, protective equipment as per SAFE Work
Procedures). Notify Manager or designates (i.e. supervisors) of all occurrences, injuries illnesses or safety and health
concerns which are likely to harm themselves, co-workers, or any others who enter the premises.
