Babe: An Olympian Musical is set in the 1930s through 1950s and depicts the life of
Mildred Babe Didrikson, a standout athlete at the 1932 Summer Olympics and one of
the first women pro golfers. This is the first full-book, full-chorus musical about women
athletes, starring a butch female lead and featuring a lesbian love story.
The book and lyrics are by Carolyn Gage, the author of seventy-five plays, who
specializes in non-traditional roles for womenespecially those reclaiming famous
lesbians whose stories have been distorted or erased from history. The score is by
Andrea Jill Higgins, noted composer, musical director, pianist, and teacher.
Presented as part of the Night Stage lineup at the 42nd National Womens Music
Festival, July 6 9, 2017, this performance will feature a pit orchestra and womens
chorus, and all roles will be performed by women. This musical will feature limited
staging but the full score and complete book.
Reprising their roles from the Arizona State University Lyric Opera Theatre reading are
Alexandra Wood as Babe and Melanie Holm as her sister Lillie.
Roles to be cast
REHEARSALS: Upon winning a part, youll be provided with a script and score and
expected to prepare on your own. Daily afternoon and evening on-site rehearsals will be
in Middleton, Wisconsin (near Madison) Tuesday, July 4 through Friday, July 7, with one
evening performance on Saturday, July 8. Please do not apply if you are not available for
that entire date span.
