Fun With Genetics! What's a Trait?

TRAIT- A genetically determined distinguishable characteristic.

ALLELE - The two or more letters used to describe a trait.

What traits can you observe in each picture?

There are different ways traits can be expressed, like brown or blue eyes.

How do we predict which color eye your offspring may have?

How would we represent these?

If we consider blue and brown eyes what makes them DominantorRecessive?

different, besides their color?

Dominant Trait - An inherited trait that is expressed if a dominant allele is passed

down from at least one parent.

Recessive Trait - An inherited trait that is expressed if two recessive alleles are Rollthedicedominantorrecessivetrait?
passed down from both parents.

Hybrid Trait - An organism that has two different alleles for a trait an organism
that is heterozygous for a particular trait.

Heterozygous - Having two different alleles for a trait.

Homozygous - Having two same alleles for a trait.

OFFSPRING
A Punnett square is a way to predict the offspring alleles using
the two parent alleles.
What type of eyes would the offspring have Think back to the grey and black/white kittens. Based on
if a brown eyed parent and blue eyed parent our Venn diagram (mom cat is grey father cat is black
crossed? and white) and our dominant/recessive predictions what
would their Punnett Square look like? Does is predict

allele?

Is there a way to predict the alleles of the offspring?

What does Bb and Cc mean for the offspring?! LAST THING!

1. We started with BB/bb and CC/cc for each Punnett
square. Both of these are homozygous because they contain How much is
TWO of the SAME allele. each box worth
2. When both these were crossed, we got a Bb/Cc for each if we need a
square. This means it is a heterozygous trait, which because 100%?
it contains ONE dominant allele, the dominant allele will be
expressed.

3. Sooo, this means that when we have Bb the offspring will

have brown eyes, and with Cc the offspring will be black
and white.
