The Second Sunday of Lent

Greetings of peace,

The financial statements of most nonprofit organizations tend not to be terribly exciting, even by
accountants (low) standards. Most organizations run the same programs from year to year, and have the
same sources of revenue and same kinds of costs. One of the notable aspects of St. Anthony Shrine is
that we tend to be a little more dynamic. In many ways, that makes some sense. Our Franciscan calling is
to meet needs as they arise. Sometimes the need is that of the Church; sometimes the need is that of our
brothers and sisters in our midst. The Franciscan way is to be lighter on our feet than most other helping
organizations. The Veterans Ministry and the Spiritual Direction Training Program are two examples of
new Shrine programs that sprang up fairly quickly from newly identified needs. Both programs are doing
well.

Our fiscal year at the Shrine begins on July 1. We are in the midst of planning a budget for the new year.
Overall, I am optimistic about our ministry and our finances. On the revenue side, we continue to do well,
with more and more people understanding and appreciating the work that we do here. Our Social Media
presence is growing at a much faster pace than those of similar organizations. Attendance at Mass and at
special events continues to do well. Since July 1, 2016, we have about 1,000 new donor names in our
database. Through the grace of God, people have a good experience here. It seems that we continue to
get new visitors to the Shrine, especially from out of town. Please help us by spreading the word about the
Shrine among your friends, family and colleagues. It is during the Lenten and Easter seasons your people
will be more open to your encouragement to participate. By contributing in this way, you follow your own
Catholic calling to evangelize and you help ensure that the friars can continue to be a vibrant, viable
religious presence in this city.

On the expense side, our plan is to be creative about finding ways to save money where can. Both

residents and visitors to Boston regularly experience some sticker shock at what things cost in this city.
Much of the cost of running the Shrine is running the infrastructure necessary to have a group of people

here ready to run a program for a group, or to assist individuals as they come in the door. We are grateful
to a long list of partners who work with us to help keep costs down. These partners are just regular people
who work in government, non-profits and business organizations. They face their challenges running their
own respective organizations, but they appreciate the good things that happen here and find ways to help
us. Thank you!

On the opposing page of this bulletin is a Statement of Revenues and Expenses. Please feel free to ask
me questions or make observations about this statement. At any given time, we have very creative and
insightful people among us. Some of our best ministry and financial ideas have come forth spontaneously
from worshipers just thinking out loud. There are official Church documents on the participation of
laypeople. (For more reading on this, see the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World,
paragraph 43.) My email address is tconway@stanthonyshrine.org and my phone number is 617-542-
6440, ext. 131.

Finally, we are very grateful to our donors. Thank you for your generosity and your encouragement toward
the friars and our work. People who get to know us and the laypeople who work with us are amazed at the
variety of the ministries, and the depth of the impact. Many, many have their lives changed for the better
through the work of this holy place and the work of my Franciscan brothers.

May you continue to grow in your appreciation of the role of Jesus in your life during this Lenten season.

Lenten Reflections

As we enter the Lenten Season, perhaps we might want to take a few moments in our busy schedules each day to
reflect upon what it is to be a Christian awaiting the Resurrection of the Lord. In the hope of aiding in that
reflection, the Worship Committee of St. Anthony Shrine offers the fruits of our search for online resources to
assist in contemplating what this season means.
