MA1 Paragraph
In our play, we are trying to address the issues of teen pregnancy, and the lack of
resources or understanding for teens who are either susceptible or who have become pregnant.
Currently in our society, teen pregnancy is a major controversy. However, there are still
resources and institutions to go to, even though they are difficult to access. Our chosen time
period is the 1950s. We chose this time period because it was an issue that was debated and
frowned upon. There were also not many resources to get a legal abortion, so we thought that it
would be a good idea to choose this time period. An example of language from this time period
is, cute guy and Im buggin. (2) Overall, our play is centered around the struggles of teen

Two young girls are sitting in a room. One is filing nails with a relaxed expression, while the
other is nervous, stiff, and quiet.
Narrator: It is the summer of 1955 in New Albany Ohio. Gary, the son of one of the richest
families in town and is currently dating Christine, the daughter of a well renowned preacher.
Christine has found out she is pregnant and Gary to blame. With there being few options for
dealing with an unwanted baby, the families would likely find out about the child. This news
would destroy both families reputation.
Jackie: Whats the matter? You feeling down? Is something wrong with Gary? Whats wrong
with Gary? Is it me? Is it because I never returned your shirt that one time I borrowed it? Im
really sorry I-
Christine: No-no. Its not you, or the shirt, or Gary- well kind of (Looks down, with
suppressed body language.)
Christine: Look, I have something important to tell you. (brief pause. Looks up at Jackie
seriously.) Im Well
(Silence fills the room. All of the sudden, Jackie breaks out into laughter)
Jackie: (Laughingly) Pregnant? Pregnant?! You thought Id fall for that bs? Youve got the body
of Audrey Hepburn!
Jackie: Oh sweet Jesus What would your dad say? Have you told anyone else? Oh god! Have
you even told Gary? What do you think Gary is going to say? Oh god! What are you going to
do?
Jackie: I- Im sorry.
Christine: No, its fine. I dont know how this could happen.
Jackie: Oh! I do! My mom explained it to me in the fourth grade! So what happens is-
Christine: That wouldnt go over well Anyways, theres not much I can do to stop this.
Jackie: You might want to figure it out soon, cause Garys comin over.
Jackie walks out of frame quickly. Christine has a face of guilt and sadness, trying to hide her
true emotions with a smile. Gary approaches her, smiling.
Christine: Hi
Gary: What?!Pregnant! No! Thats not mine! Dont you know who my parents are? Are you
kidding me? With you? Your father is the reverend! This cant be!
Christine: You selfish prick! Its just as much of your fault as it is mine! You think I wanted
this? Theres nothing I can do about it! Cut out!
Christine: (sobbing) I have a future, Gary- had a future until now. I got accepted to Harvard. Im
a straight A student, Ive worked so hard to be successful, and now this? This mistake? Both you
and the baby are mistakes. My future is going to` be taken away from me because of some lousy
mistake. Thanks, thanks a lot, Gary.
Narrator: In an unfortunate turn of events, Christine tries to abort the baby by herself with a
coat hanger. She accidentally cuts herself internally and bleeds to death. Gary tries to carry on
with out Christine but the weight of his dead girlfriend leads him to commit suicide.
