intoconsiderationthelocalclimate(freeze/thaw)andclaysoilstypicaloftheKansasCityMetroregion,aswellas
localresources/materials.

Theinformationfoundwithinthisdocumentismeanttofacilitatethedesignandinstallationofperviousconcrete
pavementsystemsforstormwatermitigation.TheEPAPhaseII,NPDESstormwatermandatesrequirepost
developmentrunofftobeequaltoorlessthanpredevelopmentrunoff.Perviousconcretepavementfilters,
cools,anddetains(temporarystorage)stormwater,whilealsoservingasaparkinglot,sidewalk,orpavement.
Perviousconcretebecomesamultipurposeproduct,fulfillingstormwaterrequirementswhilereducingsite

Perviousconcretepavementisarecognizedgreenbuildingconstructionmethod.ForthoseseekingU.S.G.B.C.
LEEDcertification,perviousconcretecanaidinachievingpointsinthesecategories:ReducedSiteDisturbance:
DevelopmentFootprint,StormwaterManagement:Rate&Quantity,Landscape&ExteriorDesigntoReduceHeat
Islands,ImprovedEnergyEfficiencytoAdjacentBuildings,RegionalMaterials,possiblyRecycledContentandother
InnovativeCredits.

Theperviousconcretesystemconsistsofasurfacelayerofspeciallydesignedconcreteconsistingof15%to25%
voidstoallowrainwatertoflowthroughthepavement.Thislayersitsonasubbaseofcleancoarseaggregate
(20%to40%voids)toactastemporarystorageforrainwater.(Otherpartsoftheworldwithsandysoilsmaynot
needthisstoragelayer,butbecauseoftheclaysoilsintheKansasCityareaitismandatoryinthismarket.)The
lastpartofthesystemconsistsofafilterfabricplacedundertheaggregatestoragelayerandontopofthesoil
subgrade.Thisfilterfabricshallalsowrapupthesidesofthesubbaseandperviousconcrete.Thisprotectsthe
subbaseandperviouslayersfrominfiltrationofsurroundingsoilsorfineswhichcanclogupthesystem.Refer
tothediagrambelowforavisualunderstandingofthedescription.

TheConcretePromotionalGroupofGreaterKansasCity(CPG)in
conjunctionwiththeMO/KSChapteroftheAmericanConcretePavement
Association(MO/KSACPA)providesPerviousConcretePavement
Certification.ItismandatoryfortheConcreteContractorplacingthe
perviousconcreteaswellastheReadyMixedConcreteSuppliertobe
PerviousConcreteCertified.TheNationalReadyMixedConcrete
AssociationalsooffersaPerviousConcreteContractorCertification.The
programsaresimilarandbothareequallyacceptable.TheCPG&MO/KS
ACPAversionnotonlyhasawrittenexam(mustpass80%orbetter)butit
alsohasafieldplacementexam.Thecertificationisopenand
recommendedtoallpartiesinvolvedintheperviousconstructionprocess
including:engineers,architects,landscapearchitects,stormwater
engineers,generalcontractors,inspectors,etc.

BothCPGandMO/KSACPAareavailableforperviousconsultation.Actual
projectconditionsmayrequiremodificationsoradditionstothisguide.

SECTION1GENERAL

1.1 Scope
Thisguideaddressestheequipment,materials,andprocessesnecessaryforperviousconcrete
pavementconstructionintheGreaterKansasCityArea.Itincludespreparationofsubgradefor
temporarydetentionofstormwater.Itistobeusedinconformancewithjobspecificplans,
specificationsandothercontractdocumentsforparkinglots,sidewalks,paths,playground
underlayment,driveways,andotherpedestrianareas.Itcanbeusedinlightresidentialtraffic
streets.

1.3 QualityAssurance
A. AmandatoryPreBidMeetingshallbeheldwithprospectivebidderstoincludecontractors,
producersandspecifierswheretheperviousconcretepavementconstructionprocesswill
bedescribed.
B. Priortosubmittingthebidthecontractorandreadymixedsupplierplacingthepervious
concretewillshowproofofcurrentPerviousCertification(eitherCPGorNRMCA
certificationorequal).Theperson(s)holdingthecertificationshallbeonthejobsiteatthe
placeofpavingduringtheentireperviousconcreteprepandplacement.Thisperson(s)shall
beinchargeoftheplacementcrew.
C. Atleast80%ofthecontractorcrewplacingperviousconcreteshallbepresentand
participatoryinthetestpanelplacement(1.6).
1.4 QualificationofLaboratoriesTheinspectionandtestingservicesofthetestinglaboratoryshall
beunderthedirectionofafulltimeemployeeregisteredasaProfessionalEngineerintheState
ofKansasorMissouriasappropriateforthejob.Theyshallhaveaminimumoffiveyearsof
professionalengineeringexperienceininspectionandtestingofconcreteconstruction,andthe
technicianshallhaveataminimumbeACIFieldTestingTechnicianCertificationaswellasCPG
PerviousConcreteTechnicianCertificationorequal.
1.5 Equipment
A. PlacementshallbedonewithaRollerScreedproperlyweightedwithwaterorsandinthe
roller,approximately20lb/ft.
B. CrossRollersshallbeusedbehindtherollerscreedtoaidinrollingouttheridgesleftbythe
rollerscreedandforfinalcompaction.Thecrossrollersshallweighamaximumof100lbs.
C. JointsshallbeplacedwithaRolledJointFormer(pizzacutter).Thisisacrossrollerwitha
flangeweldedmidsectionforrollingjointsinplasticconcrete.Thedepthoftheflangeshall
bebetweenandofthepavementthickness.

D. Tampersshallbeusedontheedgesagainsttheformstoaidinbettercompactionwhere
morewearandtearoccursandwhereconsolidationismoredifficult.Thesearetypically8
x8steelplatesattachedtoa52handle.
E. Minimumoftwoworkingspraycansforthesoybeancuretobesprayedfromeachsideof
thepavingprocess.Followthedosagerateinstructedbythemanufacturerforpervious
concretepavement.
F. Sometypeofprotectivesheetingortemporarycoverageoncurbandgutterorpreviously
pavedsection.Thisprotectstherollerscreedfromdamagefromabrasionwhenusingthe
previouslypavedsectionastheformforcurrentpavingoperation.
G. Watersource,hose,sprayerforfillingthescreedandwettingthesubbaseaggregatejust
priortotheperviousconcreteplacement.(Keepsthesubbaseaggregatefromdrawing
waterfromthefreshlyplacedperviousconcrete.)
H. Appropriatehandtoolssuchassquaredshovelsandcomealongs,forplacingthepervious
asitisdepositedfromtheconcretetruckschuteorbeltplacement.
I. Minimum6milpolysheetingshallbeusedforpavementcuring.Plasticshouldbeprerolled
andset,soastoquicklyandefficientlybeavailabletoimmediatelyrolloverthefreshly
placedpavement.Plasticshouldbecuttobeapproximately2feetwiderthantheforms
widthsetforthepavingoperation.
J. Anchorstoproperlyholddownthepolysheetingtopreventthesheetingfromblowingoff
orallowingairtobillowunderthesheeting.Wood2x4s(orequivalent)stretchedalong
eachsidetocontinuouslyholddowntheplasticwithsandbagsorequivalentevery5to6
feet.Ifwoodformsareusedtheplasticcanbestapledalongtheoutsideedgeoftheforms
tokeeptheplasticdownwithsandbagsaddedforsecurity.(Mudclumpswillnotwork.)
Preplanplacementandpreplacetheanchorsalongthepavingoperationforquickaccess.
K. PerviousconcreteisNOTpumpable,mostplacementsrequirebeltplacement.
1.6 Submittals:AdministrativeRequirementsforSubmittalProcedure
A. Priortocommencementofwork,thecontractorshallsubmitthefollowing:
1. Proposedconcretemixturesubmittalsshouldincludedesignunitweight,ASTMC1688
unitweight,anddesignedordesiredASTMC1701values,allmaterialweights,volumes,
andwater/cementitiousratio.Itisadvisedtohavethemixdesignadjustedbyworking
throughtheExcelSpreadsheetcreatedbyJohnKevern,PhD,UMKC,CivilEngineering

1.7 TestPanels(Experiencedcontractor&suppliermayomittestpanelasdirectedbythespecifier.)
Priortoconstruction,testpanelsshallbeconstructedinaccordancewiththeplansand
specifications.Atestpaneltakesaminimumfor7daystocurebeforeitisreviewedfor
approvalbytheowner/specifier.Apanelthatfailswouldindicateanothertestpanelplacement
untiloneisapproved.
A. Thetestpanelwillbeconstructedinaccordancewiththeplansandspecifications.Thetest
areawillbeaminimumof4cubicyardsor10X20area,asdeterminedbythespecifierat
thedesigneddepth.Thepanelshallbeinstalled,consolidated,jointedandcuredusingthe
materials,equipmentandpersonnelproposedfortheproject.Thetestpanelsareto
demonstratetothespecifierthatinplaceunitweightscanbeachieved,acceptable
permeabilitycanbeachievedandsatisfactorypavementcanbeinstalledatthesitelocation.
B. Thetestpanelcanbeconstructedonsiteinanareafordemolitionaftertestapprovalorin
apredeterminedareathatmaybesavedandused(forexampleapadunderapicnictable)
orwithpriorapprovalinasmallpartoftheactualproject.Ifthetestprovestobe
unsatisfactorybythespecifieritwillberemovedandreplaceduntilaccepted.Iftheactual
siteistoosmallorlimitingthespecifierandcontractorshallcometoanagreementforan
alternativetestsite.
C. Testpanelscostandremoval,ifnecessary,shallbeincludedasalineiteminthecontract
proposalandcontract.Testpanelsmaybeplacedatanyofthespecifiedperviousconcrete
pavementlocationsontheprojectsiteorothertestsite.
D. Quality:Testpanelsshallhaveacceptablesurfacefinish,jointdetails,thickness,porosity
andcuringproceduresandshallcomplywiththetestingandacceptablestandardslistedin
thequalitycontrolsectionofthisdocument.Thetestwillestablishthetargetunitweightin
thefieldtouseforacceptanceattheactualpours.Usuallytheacceptancelevelis+/5from
thisestablishedweight.
E. Satisfactoryperformanceofthetestpanelsshallbedeterminedby:
1. Organizedconstructionteamwithalltheproperequipmentathand&usedonthetest
pour,consolidatingthesurfacetoasatisfactorythicknessandsmoothnesswiththe
rollerscreedweigheddownwithwaterorsand.
2. Voidstructurebetween15%minimumand25%maximum.UseASTM1701toestablish
theinplacepermeability.
3. Anaverageinfiltrationvalueof500in./hr.isdesirableforsitesnotacceptingadditional
contributingrunon.
1.8 ProjectConditions:WeatherLimitations
A. TheContractorshallnotplaceperviousconcretepavementwhentheambienttemperature
ispredictedbytheNationalWeatherServicePointForecastforthejobsitetobe40F(4.4C)
orlowerduringthesevendaysfollowingplacement,unlessotherwisepermittedinwriting
bytheArchitect/Engineer.
B. TheContractorshallnotplaceperviousconcretepavementlaterintheyearthanNovember
1 or earlier in the year than April 1 unless otherwise permitted in writing by the
Architect/Engineer.
C. TheContractorshallnotplaceperviousconcretepavementwhentheambienttemperature
is predicted by the National Weather Service Point Forecast for the jobsite to rise above

90F (32.2C) during the seven days following placement, unless otherwise permitted in
writingbytheArchitect/Engineer.
D. Perviousconcretepavementshallnotbeplacedonfrozensubgrade.
E. Heated water typically used by ready mix producers to mitigate cold weather concreting
maynotbeusedforbatchingperviousconcrete.
1.9 PrepavingConference
A. Aprepavingconferencewiththespecifier,concretecontractorforeman(perviousconcrete
certified),generalcontractor,readymixedsupplier(perviousconcretecertified)and
inspectionpartyshallbeheldatleastoneweekpriortoperviouspavement.
B. Areviewofthecompletedtestpanelplacement.MakeavailabletheASTMC1688unit
weightandASTMC1701dataresults.
C. ReviewthePreConstructionConferenceChecklistinthebackofthisdocument.

SECTION2MATERIALS
2.1FilterFabric
Thefilterlayershallconsistofaminimum4oz.nonwovengeotextilefabric.
2.2 CoarseAggregateforStorageLayer
Thislayershallbeaminimumof12inches(sidewalkswillvary)dependingonthedesign
parameters.ThematerialshallconformtoASTMC33standardsandbecapableofhaving
minimumvoidsof38%byweightmeasuredinaccordancewithASTMStandardC29.Test
reportsshowingvoidcontentshallbesubmittedtotheprojectmanagerforaggregatestobe
usedontheproject.Thedesignermayselectotherspecificgradationsandangularitybased
uponeconomics,proximitytothepavementstructureanddesiredflowrates.Thisshallbea
cleanwashedrockwithlessthan2%retainedonthe100sieve.Thisrockshallbeamaximum
topsizeof1rock.Finesplugthesystem.(PerviousConcrete:HydrologicalDesignand
Resources,PCACD063.02,www.cement.org,recommendedasatooltodeterminedepthfor
thecoarseaggregatestoragelayer.)
2.3 CuringMaterials
A. PolyethylenesheetingTheprimarymethodofcuringperviousconcreteshallbethe
placementofawaterproofcovering.Thissheetingshallbeaclassifiedasheavydutywitha
minimumof6milsheeting.
B. Soybeanoil(cure),enoughtocurethepavementaccordingtothemanufacturer
recommendation.Thesoybeanoilisalsousedontheformsasabondbreakerandtospray
therollerscreedandotherplacementequipment/tools.
2.4 Cement
A. PortlandCementTypeI,TypeII,orTypeI/IIshallconformtoASTMC150.
B. TypeIPorISshallconformtoASTMC595.
2.5 SupplementaryCementitiousMaterials
A. FlyashshallconformtoASTMC618
B. GroundgranulatedBlastFurnaceSlag(GGBFS)knownasslaghereon,shallconformtoASTM
C989.
C. Whenflyashand/orslagareused,initialsettimewillbedelayed,andlongtermstrength
gainistypicallyincreased.

2.6 Admixtures
A. AirentrainingadmixturesshallconformtoASTMC260.(Note:Thereisnotacurrentway
totestperviousforairintheplasticstateatthistime.Normalairtestingprocedureswill
notworkwithperviousconcrete.Dosethemixbytheadmixturecompany
recommendationsasifdosingforconventionalconcrete.)Airentrainingadmixturesshallbe
usedinperviousconcrete.Dosageshouldfollowmanufacturerinstructionsforconcrete
exposedtoseverefreeze/thawconditions,typicallystartingat2oz/cwt.
B. ChemicaladmixturesshallconformtoASTMC494
1. WaterreducingadmixturesshallbetypeA,B,DorF.
(Thepolycarboxylatetypewaterreducershaveproventoworkandarestrongly
recommended.Astartingdosagerateof6oz/cwtissuggested.)
2. Extendedcontroladmixtures(hydrationstabilizers)meetingrequirementsofASTM
C494TypeBRetardingorTypeDWaterReducing/Retardingshallbeused.This
admixtureiscriticaltothesuccessofthemixdesign.(Thewarmertheweather,the
moreofthisadmixturetobeused.Perviousconcretemixesusemoreofthis
chemicalthannormaldosageratesforconventionalconcrete.TheBASF/Delvo
versionstartsat6oz/cwtcandoseupto12oz/cwtinhotweather.The
Grace/Recoverversiontakesapproximately25%moreonaverageduetothe
chemicalcompositionmakeupoftheadmixtures.)Allperviousconcreteprojects
shallhavetheseproducts,orequal.Theyshallbeavailableatthejobsiteforre
dosingasneeded.
3. Viscositymodifyingadmixtureshavebeenusedsuccessfullyinothermarkets.
C. Fibersshallbeusedinperviousconcretepavements.
1. Fibersshallbepolypropyleneorcellulose,<1.5in.fibrillatedormicrofibertype.
2. Fiberdosageratewillbe1.5lbs/yd.
3. Fibersmustberemovedfrombagsandshallbedistributedin23gallonsofwater
beforeadditiontothemixtopreventballingmaterialsandpromotingeven
distribution.(Note:Fiberbenefitsincludepreventingexcessravelingfromtoodry
mixandpreventingovercompactionfromtoowetmix.)
2.7 AggregatesforPerviousConcrete
Aggregateusedwillhaveadirectinfluenceonthepermeability,surfacetexture,andtheappearance
oftheperviousconcreteslab.Itisextremelyimportantthatthereadymixsuppliermonitorand
measuretheSSDaggregatemoisturecontentwhenbatchingperviousconcrete.Thewaterto
cementratioislowinperviousconcrete.Changesinaggregatemoistureaffectthesuccessor
failureoftheperviousmixdesign.
A. Coarseaggregateshallbecrushedstoneorcrushedgravelandshallmeetthesizeand
gradingrequirementsasdefinedinASTMD448andshallcomplywithASTMC33.Gradation
choiceshallbelimitedtosizesunlessotherwiseapprovedbythearchitect/engineer.
Thespecificgravityshallbe>2.5andtheabsorptionshallbe<2.5%toaidindurabilityand
performance.
B. Fineaggregateforperviousconcreteshallmeetthesizeandgradingrequirementsas
definedinASTMD448andshallcomplywithASTMC33.Sandwillbeincludedinthetotal
combinedaggregategradation.Generallimitsof6%sandshallbeallowedinthemix.

2.8 WaterWatershallcomplywithASTMC94.
2.9 MixDesignProportions

A. Thecontractorshallfurnishtothespecifieraproposedmixdesignwithproportionsof
materialspriortocommencementofworkincomplianceofASTMC1688.Thecomposition
oftheproposedconcretemixtureshallbesubmittedtothespecifierforreviewand/or
approvalandshallcomplywiththefollowingprovisionsunlessanalternativecompositionis
demonstratedtocomplywiththeprojectrequirements.

B. Mixtureperformancewillbeaffectedbypropertiesoftheparticularmaterialsused.Trial
mixturesmustbetestedtoestablishproperproportionsanddetermineexpectedbehavior.
Concreteproducersmayhavemixtureproportionsforperviousconcreteoptimizedfor
performancewithlocalmaterials.Herearetwosuggestedoptionsforproportioning
procedures:
1. Dr.JohnKevernsExcelSpreadsheetmentionedinSection1.5Submittals.
2. b/bmethodoutlinedinACI522R10ReportonPerviousConcrete,6.7.1
proportioningmethod.
C. ConcretemixtureunitweightshallbemeasuredinaccordancewithASTM1688forplastic
perviousconcrete.Theacceptancewillbemeasured5pcffromtheASTMC1688unit
weightestablishedatthetestpour.
D. Theperviousconcretevoidrangeshallbe15%to25%.ASTM1701shallbeusedtomeasure
theinfiltrationrateofthehardenedperviousconcrete.
E. Cementitiouscontent:SupplementaryCementitiousMaterialsmaybeused.Flyashshall
notconstitutemorethan25%(byweight)cementreplacement.Ifaternaryblended
cementisusedthetotalcombinedreplacementshallnotexceed50%ofthemassofthe
Portlandcement.
F. Perviousconcreteshallbedesignedandplacedwithawater/cementratiobetween0.30
and0.34.
G. Heatedwater(typicallyusedbyreadymixsuppliersincoldweather)shallnotbeusedinthe
makingofperviousconcretebythesupplier(seesection1.8ofthisdocument).

SECTION3EXECUTION

2.InstallationofFilterFabricandStorageLayer

b. Filterfabriclayerandstormwaterstoragelayeraggregateshallbeplaced
immediatelyafterapprovalofsubgradepreparation.Anyaccumulationof
debrisorsedimentwhichhastakenplaceafterapprovalofsubgradeshall
beremovedpriortoinstallationoffilterfabricatthecontractorsexpense.

c. Placegeotextilefilterfabricinaccordancewithmanufacturersstandards
andrecommendations.Adjacentstripsoffilterfabricshalloverlapa
minimumof16in.Thefiltershallbeplacedonthefloorofthepavement
andupthesidesofthepavementdirectlyoverthesoilsubbaseandunder
thecoarseaggregatestoragelayer.Thecontractorshallsecurefabricat
least2ft.outsideofbedandtakestepsnecessarytopreventanyrunoffor
sedimentfromenteringthestoragebed.

d. Installcoarseaggregatein6inchmaximumlifts.Lightlycompacteachlayer
withequipment,keepingequipmentmovementoverstoragebedsubgrade
toaminimum.Installaggregatetogradesrequiredonthedrawings.

e. Haybalesorequivalentshallbeplacedatthetoeofslopeswhichmaybe
adjacenttobedstofurtherpreventsedimentfromwashingintobedsduring
sitedevelopment.Asthesiteisfullystabilized,excessfilterfabricalongthe
bededgescanbecutback.

B.PerviousConcreteLayer

1. PavementThickness:
Pavementshallbeplacedtothedepthspecifiedintheplans.
Typicalparkinglotpavementthicknessrangefrom6inchesto8inches,sidewalks
tendtobe4inches.

2. Formwork:

Formmaterialsarepermittedtobeofwood,steel,orothermaterialsufficientto
supporttheplacementequipmentandtheperviousconcrete,andshallbethefull
depthofthepavement.Formsshallbeofsufficientstrengthandstabilitytosupport
mechanicalequipmentwithoutdeformationofplanprofilesfollowingspreading,
strikeoffandcompactionoperations.

3. MixingandHauling:
a. Production:
Perviousconcreteshallbemanufacturedanddeliveredinaccordancewith
ASTMC94.
b. Mixing:
Mixturesshallbeproducedincentralmixersorintransit(truck)mixers.
ConcreteshallbemixedforaminimumtimespecifiedaccordingtoACIC94.
c. Transportation:
Theperviousconcretemixturemaybetransportedtothesiteandthedischarge
ofindividualloadsshallbecompletedwithinone(1)houroftheintroductionof
mixwatertothecement.Deliverytimesmaybeextendedto90minuteswhen
dosagesofhydrationstabilizerareincreasedtomaintaintheconcrete,orbythe
discretionofthespecifier.Typicaladmixturesusedinperviousconcrete
functioneffectivelyforupto30minutes.Theystarttoloseeffectiveness
between30and60minutesmixingtime.Poorworkabilitycanberemediated
withredosingadmixturesatthejobsiteatthetimeofplacement.
d. DischargeandAdjustments:
Eachtruckloadshallbevisuallyinspectedforconsistencyofconcretemixture.
Wateradditiontoadjusttheconsistencyshallbepermittedatthepointof
discharge.(Itissuggestedthatthehydrationstabilizerand/orwaterreducerbe
availableforredoseatthejobsite,astheycanbeabetteralternativetoadding
morewater.)Aminimumof70revolutionsatthemanufacturersdesignated
mixingspeedshallbecountedfollowingtheadditionofanywatertothemix,
priortofurtherdischarge.Concreteshallbedepositedasclosetoitsfinal
positionaspracticalandsuchthatdischargedconcreteisincorporatedinto
previouslyplacedplasticconcrete.

4. PlacingandFinishing:
a. Thesubbaseshallbeinamoistconditionattimeofplacementtoensureno
reductioninstrengthofthepavement.Thecontractorshallspraytheaggregate
basewithwaterjustpriortoplacingpervious.
b. Concreteshallbedepositedintotheformsbymixertruckchute,conveyoror
buggy.(PerviousconcreteisNOTpumpable.)
c. Usearollerscreedasdescribedunder1.5SpecialEquipment.Placementshall
bedonewithaRollerScreedproperlyweightedwithwaterorsandintheroller.
Failuretoweighdowntherollerscreedwillresultinpoorcompactionandpoor
ridingsurface.

d. IfapprovedbytheArchitect/Engineerinwriting,thecontractormayplacethe
perviousconcretewithanalternatescreed.Thecontractormustshowproper
informationtosubstantiatehis/herabilitytosuccessfullyplacepervious

e. CrossRollersshallbeusedbehindtherollerscreed(andontopofthepoly
sheetingplacedinthecuringstep)toaidinrollingouttheridgesleftbythe
rollerscreedandforfinalcompaction.
f. Jointing:
1. JointsshallbeconstructedutilizingaRolledJointFormer(pizza
cutter),asdescribedinsection1.5ofthisguidespecification.
Jointingshallbeperformedimmediatelyafterrollercompaction.
Jointsshallbepremarkedwheretheywillberolledinbeforepaving
starts.Thesoybeanoilcuremaybeplacedbeforeandafterthe
jointisrolledintothepavement.
2. Isolationjointsshallbeusedwhenabuttingfixedverticalstructures
suchasmanholes,lightpoles,signagepoles,etc.
3. Jointsinperviousarespacedsimilarlytoconventionalconcrete.2X
thethicknessinfeetor15feetwhicheverissmaller.(Example:A
typical6inchthickperviouspavementshouldhaveamaximum

g. Curing:
1. Curingproceduresshallbegin3to5minutesbehindtheroller
screed.
2. Thepavementsurfaceshallbecoveredwithaminimumof6mil
thickpolyethylenesheetorotherapprovedcoveringmaterial.
3. Thepolyshallberolledontubespriortopavement,toallowthe
polytoberolledoverthefreshpavementthewidthoftheforms.
Thereshallbeaminimumof12overhangoneachsideoftheform,
tohaveenoughextrapolytoproperlyanchorthesidesdown.
4. Priortocovering,soybeanoilshallbesprayedontothepavement

3.2 Testing
ASTMC09.49andACI522committeesareworkingtogethertodevelopstandardizedtestingfor
perviousconcrete.ASTMisscheduledtoreleasestandardsfordetermininghardenedunitweight
andvoidsandearlyageabrasionduringspring2011.Additionaltestingisbeingpursuedfor
compressivestrength,flexuralstrengthandotherimportantqualityitems.(Update?!)
A. Unitweightistheprimaryqualitycontrolcriteria.DesignedUnitWeight,ASTMC1688.The
designedunitweightwillbeprovidedtothespecifier.DuringtheTestPanel(describedin
section1.7)theinsituunitweightisestablishedbytheconstructionteam.Theambient
temperatureandthemoistureconditionoftheaggregateshaveaheavyhandintheconsistency
oftheperviousandtheunitweights.TheReadyMixProducermayneedtoadjustthemixat
thistimeastoachieveaworkablemixforthecontractortoplaceandachievedesirable
consistency.Acceptanceisbasedonvisualacceptanceaswellas5pcffromthetestpanel
establishedunitweight.
B. Inverseslumpflowtest(DesignofPerviousConcreteMixtures,Kevern)reproducesthedischarge
ofperviousconcretefromareadymixtruck.Thisisanindicatoroftheworkabilityatthejob
siteand/orachangeintheconsistencyoftheperviousconcretebetweentrucks.Thefollowing
responseisdirectlyapplicabletorollerscreedtypeplacementwherehighlyworkablemixtures
aredesirable.Asageneralruleofthumbforperviousconcreteworkability,manualplacement
shouldbeveryworkable,whilemechanizedplacementcanbestiffer.Workabilityrequirement
forplacementotherthanthatusingrollerscreedequipmentshouldbedeterminedduringtest
placements.
1. Fillaninvertedslumpconewiththeplasticperviousconcretewithoutanycompacting
orrodding.Fillitroughlytothetopoftheinvertedslumpcone.
2. Withasmoothevenmotion,lifttheslumpconeaboutkneeheight.Ifnecessarygiveita
jostleormildshaketoloosenthematerialandletitbegintoflow.
3. Ifthematerialflowsfromtheconeitwilldischargefromthetruckandplacecorrectly
forthecontractor.Ifthematerialsstayslodgedintheconethentheconcreteistoostiff
andwillbedifficulttoevacuatethetruck.Theconcreteislikelytohavehighporosity
andlowstrength,potentiallyleadingtosurfaceravelingandloseofsurfacedurability.
4. Concretethatwillnotflowthroughtheconeindicateslossofadmixtureeffectiveness.
SiteRemediation:Add0.5gallonsperyardofperviousconcreteandmix.Retest.If
moreremediationisneededadd50%oftheoriginaldosageofeitherthewaterreducer
(orthehydrationstabilizer)inadditiontoadding0.5gallonofwaterpercubicyardof
perviousconcreteandmix.Ifmoretrucksarecoming,callthereadymixplanttohave
themadjustthenextbatchbeforearrivingtothejobsite.

condition.Othershaveonlycleanedtheperviousonanasneededbasis.
C.TheGeneralContractorshallberesponsibleformakingsuresoilerosion(rainevent,lossof
siltfencing,landscapingstagingerrors,etc.)doesntclogthepavementpriortoturningthe
pavementovertotheowner.TheGCshallperformpropervacuuming/cleaninginthisevent.
