The Scene Of the Crime:

The challenge of violence
to contemporary arts and culture

Prof. Karl Erik Schllhammer

Pontifcie Universidade Catlica, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Abstract:
The crime scene holds a privileged place in the staging of contemporary reality through the media. But, what is the
heuristic benefit of such legal gaze into reality? What can we see when the world is framed as the space of a crime?
Using examples from contemporary visual arts, in particular in Brazil, this lecture discusses the bridge that this scenario
offers towards memory and the historical present, providing elements for the formulation of a forensic aesthetic.

Prof. Karl Erik Schllhammer holds a Ph.D. in Semiotics and Latin American Literature from Aarhus University
(Denmark). Since 1991 he is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Language and Literature at the
Pontifcie Universidade Catlica in Rio de Janeiro, where he teaches comparative literature, Brazilian literature and
literary theory. He has written extensively on contemporary literature, arts and culture in Brazil.
The event is organized by the National researcher-training school for PhD-students in the aesthetic disciplines
Text, Image, Sound, Space (TBLR), Dept. of Foreign Languages (IF), and Research group TAS (LLE).
