IME 2540 Test #1 topic review
The following topics will be addressed on your first test. It’s recommended that
you review your notes and text readings with your group.
There will be four safety related questions
Describe the capacity of a lathe
Describe the purpose of rough and finish turning
Be able to identify various lathe tool cuts
How would you machine a lathe center and at what angle
Define lathe feed. How is the feed engaged
Define Milling machine feed
Know the difference between a steady rest and a follower rest
Know some common lathe tool materials, Where are they best used
Describe common lathe work holding devices, e.g. chucks, fixtures, collets
Know three methods of machining tapers.
Describe the differences between vertical & horizontal milling machines
Understand the features of a micrometer. There will be reading problems
Describe ways chattering can be overcome on the lathe
Identify cutting tool angles as described in class
Be able to solve cutting speed calculations, RPM =CSX4 DIA.
Fully understand milling cutters and their application
Describe a plunge cutting tool
Understand the use of a milling vise and fixtures
describe the use and application of both a dividing head and a rotary table
What causes chipped and burned milling machine cutting tool teeth
Be able to relate the five parts parts of a lathe with lathe functions and
associated parts. (nine points on the test) also compare these basic parts
with similar basic parts on other machine tools
For the test: Bring two page of notes, number 2 pencil & eraser
