Lectures:
Tuesday and Thursday: 14:35-15:50, Packard Lab 360, January 17 -
April 27, 2006.
Prerequisite:
CSE404 (Computer Networks) or Instructor's permission.
Course Objective:
After you complete this course, you should be able to: list various
applications of wireless sensor networks, describe the concepts,
protocols, and differences underlying the design, implementation,
and use of wireless sensor networks, and propose, implement, and
evaluate new ideas for solving wireless sensor network design
issues.
Course Description:
This course discusses protocols and architectures for wireless sensor
network design. It covers wireless sensor node and network
architectures, and communication protocols in data-link, network,
and transport layers. The course will discusses focused topics for
wireless sensor networks such as time synchronization, localization,
and topology management.

Hands-on group projects on using ns-2 (or other popular network

simulators) to simulate wireless sensor networks or nesC to program
Crossbow wireless sensors will be included.
Textbook:
No textbook. Papers and materials will be handed out.
Grading: (NOTE: Weights are tentative.)
In-class Q&A: 5%
Homework: 10%

Submitting Work:
You should submit your work through the Blackboard course
website. Your submission should be plain text (ASCII), a Microsoft
Word file, or a PDF file. Any other format will not be accepted, unless
you arrange for
an exception ahead of time due to special circumstances.
Homework assignments will be graded primarily for completeness
and correctness.
No late hand-in homework will be accepted. Exceptions will only be
granted if an extenuating circumstance can be proven to the
instructors satisfaction.
Collaboration / Academic Honesty:
All graded work is expected to be your own, unless the instructor
has authorized collaboration in writing. In particular, you are not
allowed to ask anyone but the instructor or TA for help with your
homework or programming assignments. However, you are free to
discuss the topics and concepts of the course with your classmates,
as long as you do not discuss the specifics of any assignment. Any
violation of this policy could result in failure of the course.
