Draw the neat diagram, wherever required.

Q. No. Question Description M.M.

1. a) State the Newton's law of viscosity. How does the dynamic viscosity of 8
liquids and gases vary with temperature?
b) For flow over a plate, the variation of velocity with vertical distance y from 6
the plate is given as u(y)= ay-bye, where a and b are constant. Obtain a
relation for the wall shear stress in terms of a, b, and p.
2. a) Consider the system shown in Fig.l. If a change of 0.7 kPa-in the pressure of 6
air causes the brine mercury interface in the right column to drop by 5 mm in
the brine level in the right column while the pressure in the brine pipe remains
constant, determine the ration A2/Ai.
b) Differentiate between stream line, path line and streak line. For a given 6
velocity field of V=2x3 i 6x3y j, obtain the equation of streamlines.
3. a) The water level in the tank is 15 m above the ground (Fig. 2). A hose is 6
connected to the bottom of the tank, and the nozzle at the end of hose is
pointed straight up. The tank cover is air tight, and the air pressure above the
water surface is 3 atm gage. The system is at sea level. Determine the
maximum height to which the water stream could rise.
b) Using Buckingham's u-theorem, find the expression for the thrust F on the 8
propeller of a ship or a motor boat. This thrust will be a function of density p
and viscosity p of the liquid and diameter d, speed of advance v, and rotational
speed n of the propeller.
c) Determine the rate of flow of water through a pipe of 300 mm diameter placed 8
in an inclined position where venturimeter is inserted, having a throat diameter
of 150 mm. The difference of pressure between the main and throat is
measured by a liquid of a specific gravity of 0.7 in an inverted U-tube
differential manometer which gives a reading of 260 mm. The loss of head
between the main and throat is 0.3 times of kinetic head of the pipe.
4. 8
a) Derive an expression for Bernoulli's equation when the process is (i)
isothermal (ii) adiabatic
b) An airplane is flying at a height of 12 km, where the temperature is -50 C. 4
The speed of the plane corresponds to Mach no. (M)=1.6. Assuming k=1.4
and R=287 J/kg K, find the speed of plane.
c) A pipeline conducts water from a reservoir to a power house, the elevation of 8
which is 200 m lower than that of surface of reservoir. The water is discharged
through a nozzle with a jet velocity of 60 m/s and at the nozzle exit the jet has

PTO
a diameter of 20 cm. make calculations for the power of jet and power lost in
friction between the reservoir and jet.
5. a) Two pipes of diameter 400 mm and 200 mm are each of 300 m long. When 10
the pipes are connected in series the discharge through the pipeline is 0.1 m3/s.
Find the loss of head incurred. What would be the loss of head in the system to
pass the same total discharge when the pipes are connected in parallel? Take
friction factor = 0.0075 for each pipe.
b) In liquid agitation, how the power number is depending on the mixing 10
Reynolds number in laminar and turbulent mixing zone for baffled tank.
Explain.
c) What is NPSH (net positive suction head) and cavitation in pumps? Explain 4+4+4
how NPSH is used to ensure that cavitation does not occur in the pump.
