Title:Introduction to the skeletal system Subject: SNC2P

Time: 12:55 - 2:10 Strand: B. Biology: Tissues, Organs, and Systems

Desired Results
Lesson Description
This lesson is meant to act as an introduction to the skeletal system. It will cover the
basic functions of the skeletal system, its basic composition and will allow students to
interact with it via a software skeletal mapping program. Students will be asked to
complete a labelled skeletal diagram to use as reference for a later assignment.
Students will also be able to apply these concepts to a real world scenario by
examining a case study of a famous athlete who broke his tibia and fibula in
competition (this includes an interview with a doctor who had to perform surgery on
the athletes leg) and answering questions afterward.

Ontario Curricular Overall Expectations

B2. Investigate cell division, cell specialization, and the organization of systems in animals,
including humans, using various laboratory techniques

Ontario Curricular Specific Expectations

B2.5 Locate, through a laboratory or computer simulated dissection, the organs of a specific
system of an animal.

Lesson Goals (clearly identify what students are expected to know and be able to do, as if asked the purpose by a principal)
We are learning the function and composition of the human skeletal system
We are learning what happens when bones break

Success Criteria
I know the function of the human skeletal system
I can describe 4 basic bone types found in the skeleton
I can describe how doctors facilitate the healing of bones

Assessment

Students will be assessed on their ability to locate bone types using bone mapping software.
This will take place on one projector at the front of class, so the teacher can assess of/for
learning, while students can assess and learn from each other
Teacher will assess the bone label diagram and exit slip both for and of learning

Lesson Format : What Teachers Do/Say

Hook (6-7 min)

Teacher plays an excerpt from a Family Guy episode where Peter experiences the
consequences of living life without a skeleton after wishing he didnt have bones anymore.
Teacher delivers an introduction to the skeletal system by comparing it to the frame of a
house.

Lecture/Note-taking (10 min)

Students are asked to record a short note covering the function of the skeletal system and the
types of bones it is composed of (long bones, short bones, flat bones, irregular bones)

During /working on it/action (25-30 min)

Teacher launches a skeletal system computer app (on the projector and passes a wireless
mouse around the class, asking the students to locate the types of bones discussed (ex: can
you find a long bone?, can you locate a short bone in the hand?)
Teacher hands out a skeletal system diagram labelling worksheet. Class works together
(directed by teacher) to label the diagram by bone type.

Lecture/Note-taking (10 min)

Class takes a brief note on what happens when bones break. This covers what doctors do
to try to help your bones heal and touches on what your bones are doing to heal themselves

Consolidation (10 min)

Class watches a video involving an athlete breaking his leg. It is followed by an interview
with a surgeon who explains the process of stabilizing the athletes bones in a surgical
procedure.
There will be a handout/exit slip with three questions on it pertaining to the lesson (What
bones were broken? What kind of bones were they? How did the surgeon stabilize the bones
while they were healing?)

Extension Activities/Next Steps

There is an accompanying article to this sports story that we can look at as a class if we still
have time at the end of class. It entails a doctor explaining the nature of bone breaks in this
sporting context and touches on rehabilitation.
