MOUNT BROMO

This is a legend about the creation of Mount Bromo, a famous mountain in East
Java, which is so famous with the beautifulness of sun rises panorama on it's peak.

Hundred years ago, during the reign of the last king of Majapahit (13-14 century
AD), Brawijaya, one of the King's wives gave birth to a girl, Roro Anteng. Later
she got married to Joko Seger, from Brahman (priests) caste. Because of an
unfortunate situation, they were forced to leave the kingdom. They settled an area
in the mountain, named it "Tengger."

For years, they were unhappy because they didn't have a child. They climbed the
peak of the mountain, prayed to gods. Betara Bromo (God of Fire) promised them
many children, but they have to sacrifice their youngest children.
They finally got 25 children, and they had to sacrifice the youngest, Kesuma, but
they hid him. But an eruption happened and Kesuma fell into the crater. Then his
voice heard: "I have to be sacrificed so that you will all stay alive. From now on
you should arrange an annual ceremony on the 14th of Kesodo."

Kesuma's brothers and sisters held the offering ceremony every year by offering
fruits, vegetables, and rice, and meats. This has been done until today by Kejawen
sects. (The Javanese original religion that mixed with Islam.)

The Story and Legend of Mount Bromo

Heres the legend of how the Tenggerese came to live in Mount Bromo.

A long time ago, there lived a beautiful woman by the name Roro Anteng. She was a
reknown beauty and had attracted the attention of an evil giant. Because the evil
giant possessed extraordinary magical powers, Roro Anteng dared not reject the
giants advances when he proposed to her. Roro thought of a plan to get away from
the marriage without offending the giant. In order to get her hand in marriage, the
giant had to fufill her wishes.

Roro then concocted a difficult request in hopes that the giant did not have the
power to fufill it. She had asked him to make her a sandy desert in between the
mountains in one night and before the break of dawn.

Unfortunately for her, the giant magically and swiftly begin to work his powers and
was near completing her wishes. The fast thinking Roro Anteng quickly thought of an
idea to disrupt the completion, she made all sorts of noises that woke up the
roosters. The roosters began to crow bringing dawn in.

On hearing the roosters calls, which signalled the break of dawn, the giant was
shocked for having failed his task. Frustrated, he threw the coconut shell that he
used to dig the desert, the shell fell to the ground beside Mount Bromo, forming what
is now knows as Mount Batok (coconut shell). The sandy plain was to form the
Tengger caldera.

The story continues with Roro Anteng falling in love with Joko Seger, a descendant of
the great Majapahit Kingdom who had led a reclusive life on the desolate mountain
range.
They were married, living happily blessed with many children. Their children and
their descendents formed the tribal community of the Tengger (taken from the
names Roro Anteng and Joko Seger).

This was the story of how the Tenggerese tribe came to be and how they lived the
lands.

Rara Anteng and Joko Seger Legend in Bromo

The popular version of the legend of mount Bromo goes like this: once upon a time, someplace in
Mount Pananjakan, there was a woman who gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. The girl, said to be the
descendant of a god, did not cry when she was born. Because of this, she was named Rara Anteng
(anteng is a Javanese word means calm). She grew up into the most beautiful girl that attracted so
many young men in East Java.

Rara Anteng was not interested to all the men that fell in love with her, because she already set her
heart for someone else: a handsome priests son called Joko Seger. However, there was a pirate
(some said a giant) who fell in love with her and intended to force her into marriage. He boasted to
Rara Anteng about his magical skill and what great things he could do, and since Rara Anteng was a
soft-spoken girl, she could not refuse him loudly. Therefore, she asked the pirate to prove his words
by building her an ocean in the middle of mountain with coconut shells in one night.

Rara Anteng was worried when she saw the progress the pirate made. Therefore, she concocted a
plan to foil the plan. She pounded rice using traditional mortar and pestle hard, creating sounds that
woke the roosters. Hearing the roosters crowing, the pirate thought that he was late. Upset and
disappointed, he threw his coconut shell away, which fell next to Mount Bromo and turned into a new
mountain called Mount Batok (batok is a word for coconut shell). Rara Anteng and Joko Seger were
finally able to be together.

How Tengger People Were Born

The popular History and legend of Mount Bromo did not stop at the marriage of Rara Anteng and Joko
Seger; they later became the first rulers of Tengger people. They built a settlement and became a pair
of rulers called Purbowasesa Mangkurat Ing tengger, literally means The Benevolent Tengger
Rulers. The name Tengger was allegedly taken from parts of their names, Anteng and Seger.
However, they grieved before they did not get children after years of marriage. They later climbed to
the top of Bromo to pray, and were promised children, with the condition that their youngest child.

Was to be sacrificed to the gods.

Rara Anteng and Joko Tengger later had 25 children, but since they did not want to sacrifice any of
their children, they tried to avoid fulfilling the promise. This made the gods angry and Mount Bromo
spewed smokes and fire as the result. The fire later claimed the youngest child of Rara Anteng and
Joko Tengger, dragging him into the crater. The childs spirit later asked his parents to give offerings at
the same time every year to Mount Bromo to appease the gods, and this legend of Mount Bromo
became the background of Kasada Ceremony Tengger people did every year.

THE LEGEND OF MOUNT BROMO

the most beautiful places and interest in East Java. Watching the sun rises from
the crest of Bromo is a very exciting experience for the tourist coming to this
mountain. To reach the area, which is about 2392 m above sea level, people
usually take a bus or a car as far as the village of Ngadisari. From there, a pony
ride will take tourist to the rim of the mountain. It is an active volcano, and the
people surrounding areas bring various things as a sacrifice to the fire god,
Betoro Bromo. The legend goes as follows :
Hundreads a years ago, during the reign of the last king of Majapahit,
Barawijaya, one of the Kings wives gave birth to a girl, who was named Roro
Anteng. Later this young princes married Joko Seger, who came from a
Brahman caste. Because of the unfortunate situation the couple was forced to
leave the kingdom. They settled down in the mountain area. They ruled the area
and named it Tengger , which was derived from the couples names : Roro
Anteng and Joko Seger.
After several years the region flourished in prosperity, but Roro Anteng
and Joko Seger were unhappy because they did not have a child. Frustated, they
climbed the top of the mountain and prayed night and day hoping that the gods
would listen. The prayer was heard and Betoro Bromo promised them many
children. However, the couple had to promise that they would sacrifice their
youngest child in return.
Roro Anteng gave birth to a child, then another and another. In the end
Roro Anteng and Joko Seger got 25 children. Soon it was time for them to
sacrifice the youngest child, Kesuma, but the parents just could not do it. They
tried to hide the child, but an erouption happened and Kesuma fell into the
crater. There was silence before they heard a voice: I have to be sacrificed so
that you will all stay alive. From now on, you should arrange an annual
offering ceremony on the 14 th of Kesodo (the twelfth month of Tenggerese
calender). It was Kesumas voice.
Kesumas brothers and sisters held the offering ceremony every year.
Instead of a human being, these people collected fruit, vegetables, rice and meat
to be offered to the gods. And this has been done generation after generation

Story of Mount Bromo - The Tengger Tribes

The most popular and well known of East Java's tourist attractions is undoubtedly
Mt Bromo. The pre-dawn departure and trek across the mountain's famous 'sand
sea', to watch the sunrise at the crater rim, has become something of a ritual,
enacted daily by people of every nationality.

Bromo is actually just one crater in the vast, 800 km2 Tengger massif, which forms
the largest of East Java's five main volcanic ranges. Although by no means the
highest mountain in the region (2392m), it has gained its reputation partly because
of its unique location and partly through the reverence shown to it by the local
inhabitants.

A legend connected with Mt Bromo tells of the origin of the Tenggerese people.
According to the story, it was during the closing years of the 15th century, when
the East Javanese empire of Majapahit was in decline, that a princess of the
kingdom, named Roro Anteng, and her husband Joko Seger, retreated to the Bromo
region and established a separate principality, which they named Tengger, a
combination of the last syllables of each of their names. The region, it is said,
developed and prospered, yet no descendants were born to the ruling couple.

In despair, Roro Anteng and Joko Seger climbed to the top of Mt Bromo and
prayed to the gods, asking for their help. The gods consented to the request on the
condition that the last child born be sacrificed in the crater of the mountain. This
agreed, the royal couple returned home happily and it wasn't long before the
princess gave birth to their first child. In fact, the gods turned out to be more than
generous and in the following years 24 more children were born. However, when
the princess learned that the twenty fifth children, named Kesuma, was to be the
last and thus the one to be sacrificed, she could not bring herself to fulfill her part
of the bargain. In anger, the gods threatened fire and brimstone from the smoking
volcano and eventually there was no alternative but to throw the child into the
crater.

Shortly after the sacrifice had been made, the child's voice was heard, ordering the
Tengger people and their descendants to perform an annual ceremony at Mt
Bromo, to commemorate the event and to appease the anger of the gods.

To this day, the Kasodo ceremony, held on the 14th day of the Tenggerese month of
Kasodo (December), is the biggest event of the year for the people of Mt Bromo.
Ritual prayers and traditional performances are held at the village of Ngadisari,
after which crowds gather on the sand sea surrounding the mountain for the climax
of the ceremony at midnight, when livestock and agricultural produce are flung
into the crater. Now a days, as an additional attraction arranged to coincide with the
Kasodo ceremony, bull races are organized at the village of Muneng Probolinggo.
The Tengger Range is one of eight official nature reserves in East Java and centres
around the peaks of Mts. Bromo and Semeru. Most of the area is more than 2000
metres above sea level, Mt Semeru itself being Java's highest mountain at 3,676m.

There are several ways to get to the Bromo and Semeru Reserve. The well-worn
route is from the north coastal town of Probolinggo, 60 km away. A reasonably
good road winds its way south and up into the hills via Sukapura, ending at
Ngadisari, one of the largest of the 38 traditional Tenggerese villages. For those
wishing specifically to visit Mt Bromo, this is the best route, since there is
accommodation at Ngadisari, as well as at Cemara Lawang on the edge of the sea
sand above the village. The most comfortable place to stay is at the brand new
Hotel Grand Bromo at Sukapura, which was officially opened early in 1990.
Thoughtfully designed to blend in with the contours of the landscape, the hotel
offers pleasantly furnished rooms and a very efficient hot water system. Organized
tours are available from here to Mt Bromo and other places of interest nearby.

An alternative route, from the northwest, leads from Pasuruan on the coast through
Wonokitri and Tosari, to the summit of Mt Penanjakan on the edge of the sea sand.
This is rapidly becoming the favoured spot to welcome the dawn, since it is the
highest point in the vicinity and offers a spectacular view of Mt Semeru and the
entire Bromo caldera. As yet, however, there is only limited simple
accommodation at Tosari.

THE LEGEND OF MOUNT BROMO
A fiery folk tale.

The legend of Mount Bromo traces back to the fifteenth century, when the princess
of the East Javanese empire of Majapahit, Roro Anteng, and her husband, Joko
Seger, came to the Bromo region. They named the region Tenggera combination
of their last names (Anteng and Seger). Their region prospered, but the ruling couple
found themselves unable to conceive. They prayed to the gods from Mount Bromos
edge. The gods agreed to give them children on the condition that they throw into the
crater the last child born as a sacrifice. Soon they gave birth to their first child, and
were blessed with many more.
When the twenty-fifth child, Kesuma, was born, Roro learned that this would be their
last and would have to be sacrificed. She refused. This angered the gods, and they
threatened to spew volcanic fire over the land. In order to protect their kingdom, the
couple followed through on their promise. It is said that the childs voice was heard
shortly after, ordering the Tengger people, and all their descendants, to perform an
annual ceremony to commemorate the event and appease the still angry gods.

Keeping The Legend Alive

To this day, the community comes together annually for the Kasodo Ceremony,
which is held in a temple at the foot of the mountain. On the fourteenth day of the
ceremony they travel up the mountain. Crowds gather on Bromos sand sea at
midnight. They bring their offerings for the gods to throw into the crater. The
ceremony is a spectacle of villagers walking around the edge with offerings of fruit
baskets on their heads, or cages containing small animals, each decorated with
flowers.
Mount Bromo holds a unique magic. It is a place where legend is kept alive, still
whispering from the rumbling depths of the earth itself.
