Science Lesson Plan #10- Building Boats and labelling steps
LESSON PLAN OBJECTIVES - Students will: (within this lesson)

By the end of the assignment...


The students will understand the components that are required to build different
types of structures.
The students will be able to infer upon the differences in materials and their
effects.
The students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of structures in their
own composition of them.
The students will be able to create connections between structures they have been
exposed to in their lives, and the ones in the lesson activities.

By the end of the lesson...


The students will demonstrate their understanding of building steps through
their boat creation.
The students will create a representation of a boat.
The students will infer upon the effectiveness of the materials used.

MATERIALS/ EQUIPMENT/ SET UP

Tinfoil sheets
Plasticine
Straws
Half sheets of paper (1 per student)
Building steps sheet.

Pre-emptive Tasks for Teacher

Teacher will prepare materials prior to lesson.


Teacher will prepare talking points prior to lesson.
Teacher will ensure building steps are decided prior to lesson.
Teacher will create a model for students to look off of prior to lesson.

PROCEDURE
Introduction (7 min.)

Welcome the students to the classroom and gather their attention.


Explain to the students that building applies to many structures such as
cars, boats, toys, etc.
The teacher will explain that when building something there are normally
directions to help you build it that label what you are suppose to do.
The teacher will explain what will happen during this lesson (see body).

Learning Activity #1: (XX minutes)


The teacher will hand out the building steps chart that the students will use
throughout the lesson.
The teacher will also hand out the boat materials for each student and
encourage the students to not touch the materials until ready. The class will
then go through a very hands-on process of building the boats while
drawing the steps on the observation chart.
The class will build the boats step by step together while following the the
teacher and drawing in observations on the chart.

Closure (X min.)

The students will store their boats on the side of the room to use for the
future boat racing lesson.
Have the students clean up all materials and prepare for dismissal
