The Nursing Community

The primary audience for the discourse community I chose will be all students who are

interested in pursuing a career as a nurse, preferably a registered nurse. A degree is required to

become a nurse, so I will be touching on all topics that relate to the different routes one can take

in order to become a nurse. Because I am a part of this community, I will be able to share all the

information I find, that relates to the education required to be a nurse, with any student who is

also seeking further information about nursing as a career. The goal is to be able to share my

findings in a manner where my fellow peers understand what I am saying, and are informed with

the possible choices they can make for themselves.

My tone will be semi-formal since I want my audience to feel that peer on peer

connection. The audience should be able to easily comprehend all the information I will be

sharing. There are many sources of information to students out there that are much more

informative and formal, but the purpose of my writing is to provide information in a manner that

is simple for one to understand. I know what it is like to research plenty of websites and become

bored or to not understand the text completely; that is what I want my audience to avoid feeling.

Any student who does not have an idea of what courses they are required to take in hopes

of becoming a nurse, can benefit from learning about my discourse community. For example, an

incoming freshman can be just as confused as I was before learning all the essential information

to get me through the first couple of years, and mainly my first year in college. A group on

campus who I can share my findings with is the Nursing club. Their purpose is to educate anyone

seeking to be a nurse after receiving their degree. I can contribute to this community by working

with them in hopes to benefit the future undergraduate students at Davis who want to pursue a

career as a nurse. I am a freshman here at Davis, therefore, I can provide perspective as a first-

year student and bring all the questions and concerns I encountered with before becoming

informed. This should help the club who specializes in informing undergraduate students by

allowing them to share more information that relates to specific questions I shared, which are

common questions any incoming freshman may have.

I hope to be able to inform my audience with many information that relates to nursing as

a career, specifically how to become a nurse. My audience consists of college students, so I will

be sharing the different courses required to take the class, the grades that the student should

receive, the G.P.A., and anything of that sort that can potentially answer any questions the reader

may have.

1. What was the purpose of creating this club?

2. How have you helped students in the past?

3. What days do you meet? Hours?

4. What does this club offer?

5. How have you helped with someones education?

6. What classes are you required to take?

7. What should you do aside from taking all the necessary classes?

8. Are there any clubs or activities you recommend to help the student become a nurse?

9. How do you know if nursing is right for you?

10. What interested you in nursing?

11. What should you expect as a nurse?

12. What is the working environment?

13. Is additional school required after the BSN?

14. What are good schools to apply to?

15. Does the city you live in impact the jobs available?

In asking these questions, I hope to include the answers ins a part of my research. These

questions ask the basic questions any freshman may have. I still do not know the answers to

these questions and hope that with the help of the Nursing Club, I will be more informed. The

questions asked varied from the clubs goals, to expectations as a nurse, to the education required

to be a nurse, education after receiving a bachelors, I also touched on the topic of where the

student may choose to reside in the future and how it can affect them. All these questions are

important because they can help someone determine whether nursing is the right career or if they

should change their major. As a freshman, it is stressing having to adapt to the college education

alone, and having to worry about your career is simply another stress. My goal is to be able to

relieve some of the stress students may have in terms of being confused as to what is expected to

becoming a nurse.
