The department of journalism is home to the only public relations graduate program in
the nation to receive certification from the Public Relations Society of America.
The Ball State Daily News is a student-run publication in the department that recently
won the Gold Crown award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
Ball State Universitys Department of Journalism has been accredited by the International
Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications since 1979.
What: The Ball State University Board of Trustees named Geoffrey Mearns the
universitys 17th president.
Who: Geoffrey Mearns comes from Northern Kentucky University. He presided of their
university for over four years. At Northern Kentucky, Mearns secured millions of
dollars in funding. Prior to his tenure at Northern Kentucky, he also served as
provost at Cleveland State University and spent 17 years as an attorney.
Why: After the resignation of Ball State President Paul Ferguson, Terry King has been
serving as interim president. "Geoff Mearns is exactly the leader Ball State needs
to move us boldly into the next 100 years," said Board Chair Rick Hall.
