Interdisciplinary Connections:
Physical Education
Connection to Standards:
K.NS.2: Write whole numbers from 0 to 20 and recognize number words from 0 to 10. Represent
a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).
K.CA.2: Solve real-world problems that involve addition and subtraction within 10.
K.1.1 Perform basic (fundamental) locomotor skills.
Time: 30min
Materials/Equipment Required:
Square White Paper
Black Tape
White board
Markers
Glue
Objectives:
- After completing this activity, children will be able to:
- Write number 0 to 10.
- Put number 0 to 10 in order.
- Use number line to do addition and subtraction within 10.
Suggested Procedure:
Opening
In the morning 9:30 to 10:30 time, gather students on the rug at number corner in the
classroom, and teacher use tape to make a number line without number on the ground before
the class.
Teacher encourages all the students count 0 to 10 together.
Teacher encourages students to write the number in the square white paper which needs to put
on the big number line on the ground. E.g. Raise your hand if you can write 0.
Development
Teacher helps students to put 0 to 10 in order to the number line on the ground and glue the
number on the ground.
Teacher shows children how to use the frog hop to do the addition and subtraction.
o More than hops to the right
o Less than hops to the left
Teacher needs to give kids different directions based on their learning levels.
o Introductory: Start at 2. Hop forward 3.
o Level two: 3 More than 6.
o Level three: 4+5= (in vertical format)
o Level four: Start at 5. How many hops to 8? (missing addends and subtrahends).
Each student can have at least a turn to do the frog hop on the number line, so students can be
on a line to wait to have a hop on the number line.
Closing
Teacher hands students a number line and encourages them to make their own number line on
the paper.
Teacher gives students the four levels worksheet for them to practice using the number line to
solve the addition and subtraction problems.
Student Assessment:
Teacher asks children to show the teacher how they use number line to solve addition and
subtraction.
Children can work in pairs to take turn to show each other how to use number line to solve
addition and subtraction.
Teacher takes notes about accuracy of each level questions for each student. If they have some
problems about do some specific kinds of questions, teacher knows how to help children to do
particular kinds of questions.
