threatenedtofileFIRundertheSC&ST(PreventionofAtrocities)Act
againstSupremeCourtjusticesJSKheharandRBanumathiwhoon
MondayorderedtheMadrasHighCourttostopassigningjudicialwork
tohim.KarnanalsostayedsuomotuthechiefjusticeofIndiaTS
Thakur'slettertransferringhimtoCalcutta.

TheapexcourtbenchcomprisingKheharandBanumathiwasdealing
withapetitionfiledlastweekbysenioradvocateKKVenugopalon
behalfoftheMadrasHighCourtregistrargeneral.Thepetitionrelated
tothreeletterswrittenbyjusticeKarnan.Inoneofthelettersaddressed
totheChiefJustice,KarnanallegedthathewasleftoutoftheTamil
JusticeCSKarnanisnostrangertocontroversies
NaduStateJudicialAcademyfunctionsbecausehebelongedto
ScheduledCaste.ThecontroversydatesbacktoAprillastyearwhenKarnaninitiatedsuomotuproceedingsandpasseda
judicialorderquestioningtheinclusionofsomejudgesinarecruitmentcommitteeformedbychiefjusticeKaultointerview
candidatesforselectionofciviljudges.Karnanwentontostaythechiefjustice'sadministrativeorderandrestrainedpublic
servicecommissionchairmanfromconductingtheinterview.

AdivisionbenchoftheMadrashighcourtstayedKarnan'sorder.ButonApril30,Karnanreiteratedhisearlierorderand
threatenedtocontemptofcourtproceedingsagainstthechiefjustice.TheSCsubsequentlystayedJusticeKarnan'sorder.
Notnewtocontroversies,in2014,Karnanstormedintoacourtroomallegingpartisanshipinaproposedappointmentof
additionaljudges.LastyearheallegedthatajudgeintheMadrasHCsexuallyassaultedaninternonthecourtpremises.
