Chapter 1

Introduction

Through the years, electricity has been one of the most

vital necessities in our everyday living and even up

peoples least activity the existence of electrical energy

is in prodigious demand. In line with this matter, power

interruptions that consumers are experiencing do not only

causes less to serious trouble and discomfort to customers

but it also outcomes fatal injuries and worse-death.

Prolonged durations without electricity extremely affect

almost all economic activities and circulations undesirably.

Therefore, in any system, ensuring reliability is quite

important. One of its significant principles is highlighting

improvements in system design through performance

investigation, thus leading to coming up to the most

effective ways in the operation and maintenance of the

particular system.

In this case study, the researchers aim to assess the

reliability of NEECO II- Area 2 using System Average

Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI), Customer Average

Interruption Duration Index (CAIDI) and System Average

Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI) as the predictive

indices that measure the system performance.

Importance of the paper

This study will be benefited the following:

A. The NEECO II Area 2

B. The Consumers
C. The Electrical Engineering Students- for them to become

aware on the predictive indices of NEECO II Area 2.

D. The University - to recognize the school as one of the

sources of reference studies regarding the reliability

state assessment of NEECO II Area 2 using predictive

indices.
E. The Researchers the results and the data gathered by

the researchers along the study can be used and applied

in developing related studies and to their future

works.

Scope and delimitation

This study will cover the Reliability assessment of

NEECO II Area 2 for the year 2015 (January to December).

Also this study will focus only in SAIDI, CAIDI and SAIFI as

predictive indices for NEECO II Area 2 which supplies

electricity to the consumers of the following

municipalities: Rizal, San Leonardo, Sta. Rosa, Penaranda,

Gabaldon, Laur, Bongabon, Llanera, Gen. Tinio, Palayan,. On

the other hand, causes of interruptions whether planned or

unplanned are not included in this study.

Definition of terms

CAIDI(Customer Average Interruption Duration Index) this

index measures the average time to restore service to the

customer.

MOMENTARY INTERRUPTION a single interruption of an

interrupting device that results in a voltage zero.An outage

of not more than five minutes in duration.

RELIABILITY is the performance of the elements of the bulk

electric system that results in electricity being delivered

to the customers within accepted standards and in the amount

desired.
SAIDI(System Average Interruption Duration Index) this

index measures the total duration of an interruption for the

average customer during a given time period.

SAIFI(System Average Interruption Frequency Index) this

index measures the average number of times that the system

customer experiences an outage during the year.

SUSTAINED INTERRUPTION any interruption not classified as

a momentary event.
