Show your work. Explain your reasoning. Use decimal approximations

only when asked to do so.

1. The Cantor set (named after Georg Cantor) is a subset of the unit interval [0, 1]. To
construct the Cantor set, first remove the middle third ( 13 , 32 ) of the interval, leaving
two line segments. For the second step, remove the middle third of each of the two
remaining segments (the intervals ( 19 , 29 ) and ( 79 , 89 )), leaving four line segments. Continue
this procedure indefinitely. The Cantor set consists off all numbers in the unit interval
[0, 1] that still remain.
(a) (7 points) Find the total length of all the line segments that are removed.
(b) (3 points) Write down three numbers that are in the Cantor set.
(c) (5 points) Let Cn denote the total length of the remaining line segments after n
steps. Find limn Cn .

of the corresponding improper integral? What conclusion can you draw from this
observation?
