Read the information and procedures provided in the lab and complete both the table and journal
questions (provided below). Please note you should be answering your questions in detail, by
providing support in the form of data values (external or from the lab) and scientific
information/research to explain your statements.

Journal Questions:

1 Many species of arachnids are predators, but have no teeth or jaws. How do they obtain
nutrients from their prey?

Arachnids obtain nutrients from their prey via extracellular digestion.

2 Arthropods are the most diverse group of animals. Describe some characteristics of
arthropods that may have contributed to their great evolutionary success.
A characteristic that may have contributed to arthropods exclusionary success is their
exoskeleton made of chitin. This characteristic provides protection, helps them adapt to their
changing environment, and allows them to more easily.

3 What are some advantages and disadvantages of having an exoskeleton?

Advantages Disadvantages

drying out. As the animal grows the exoskeleton
becomes very heavy and hard to
maneuver.

4 Which of the five classes of arthropods is the most diverse? Explain.

Out of all the arthropods Class insect is the most diverse. This is because they have a short life
span that comes with rapid reproduction. The more offspring an animal is having, the more
chance there is for genetic recombination or mutation. Most insects are not monogamist which
means they are constantly mating with different partners. This offers even more diversity.
