CHEMICAL ENGINEERING SERIES: HEAT TRANSFER

SOLVED PROBLEMS

An overhead 25-m long, uninsulated industrial steam pipe of 100 mm diameter is

routed through a building whose walls and air are at 25 C. Pressurized steam
maintains a pipe surface temperature of 150 C, and the coefficient associated with
natural convection is 10 W/m2K. The surface emissivity is 0.8. What is the rate of
heat loss from the steam line?

SOLUTION:

Combined radiation (non-black surfaces) and natural convection

q=q c + qr

q r=A ( T surf 4T surr 4 )

W
(
q r= 5.672 x 108 2
m K 4 )
( 0.8 ) [ ( 0.1m ) ( 25 m) ] [ ( 423 K ) 4( 298 K )4 ]

q r=8,599.3034 W

q c =hA ( T surf T surr )

W
(
q c = 10

[ ( 0.1 m )( 25 m ) ] ( 423298 ) K

q c =9,817.4770 W

q=8,599.3034+ 9,817.4770

q=18,416.7804 W
