BP GLOBAL

Good morning to all present here, my name is Karthik Jensen. I am the newly appointed
spokes person and representative of British Petroleum, and i am here to clarify and bring to
your attention certain issues regarding the Deep Water Horizon oil spill incident that occured
on the evening of 20 April 2010, causing a gas release and subsequent explosion occurring
on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig working on the Macondo exploration well for BP in the Gulf
of Mexico.

This press conference today, is arranged for our company, to state our point of view
regarding this enormous accident for your better understanding and to avoid misconception
on our company. Our company BP is now facing Mexican class action lawsuit over the Deep
Water Horizon oil spill. Our organisation is also swarmed by legal actions initiated by various
government bodies and local communities, moreover conservation NGOs have launched
series of media and social media warfare against our company BP which is why you are all
present here. As a representative of my company, i am not here to deny the allegations which
are put upon us or to justify what we did was right. We would just like to bring clarity and
shed the lights to the situation.

First and foremost, before we release statements to bring clarity to the situation, our
company would like to acknowledge the loss and share our heartfelt condolences to the
families of the victims of the tragedy. Touching on the fact of the tragedy, we are deeply
saddened with the loss of our 11 employees, namely Jason Anderson,35, Aaron Dale
Burkeen,37, Donald Clark,49, Stephen Ray Curtis,40, Gordon Jones,28, Roy Wyatt
Kemp,27, Karl Kleppinger Jr.,38, Keith Blair Manuel,56, Dewey Revette,48, Shane
Roshto,22, and Adam Weise,24. We deeply regret this loss of life and recognize the
tremendous loss suffered by the families, friends and co-workers of those who died. We also
have 17 more victims who were injured over the incident and are undergoing necessary
treatment in the hospital. The injured victims in the hospital are reported to be recovering and
we thank the emergency police and fire force for immediately saving them from the incident
and admitting them in the hospital.

Secondly, we are also obliged to acknowledge the loss caused to the environment and
nature as they have equal imporance as our fellow employees. Due to the spill, the Gulf of
Mexicos diverse ecosystem which includes the deep-sea ocean ridges and trenches, mid-
depth banks, barrier islands, beaches, coral reefs and estuaries are affected. As currents and
winds spread the oil from the mile-deep spill site, all habitats are at risk of contamination.
Estuaries and coral reefs are some of the most sensitive areas in the impact zone as they
provide protection, feeding areas, and nurseries for a large diversity of species. Sea turtles
and marine birds were some of the first wildlife affected by the spill, as they live and feed on
the surface where floating oil collects. Dolphins, whales and other marine mammals were
also affected as they come to the surface to breath. Ingested oil can kill these animals
immediately. This deep water horizon oil spill has also resulted in economical damage.

Our company is ashamed of the amount of damage which was caused by this oil spill. I, on
behalf of BP apologize for the accident that had occured and would like to give an
explanation on how this accident took place. As a result of our investigation, we discovered
that there are few reasons for the leak to begin.

First reason is the dodgy cement. The cement at the bottom of the borehole did not create a
seal, and oil and gas began to leak through it into the pipe leading to the surface. We realise
that the cement formulation seems not to have been up to the job. Secondly, the failure of the
valve, which at the bottom of the pipe to the surface was sealed in two ways. It too was filled
with cement, and it also contained two mechanical valves designed to stop the flow of oil and
gas. All of these failed, allowing oil and gas to travel up the pipe towards the surface. Third
problem is misinterpreted pressure test.

The crew carried out various pressure tests to determine whether the well was sealed or not.
The results of these tests were misinterpreted, so they thought the well was under control.
Fourth reason is that the leak was not spotted soon enough, whether a well is under control
or not. The crew at the surface should be able to detect a flow of oil and gas towards the
surface by looking for unexpected increases in pressure in the well, but it was not interpreted
as a leak. Futhermore, the fifth reason would be the overwhelmed separator. The crew had
the option of diverting the mud and gas away from the rig, venting it safely through pipes
over the side. Instead, the flow was diverted to a device on board the rig designed to
separate small amounts of gas from a flow of mud. The so-called mud-gas separator was
quickly overwhelmed and flammable gas began to engulf the rig.

More over, the sixth reason that we have is, the rig had an onboard gas detection system
that should have sounded the alarm and triggered the closure of ventilation fans to prevent
the gas reaching potential causes of ignition, such as the rigs engines. This system failed,
and having no gas alarm. Lastly, the seventh point we have reported is having no battery for
the BOP. The explosion destroyed the control lines the crew were using to attempt to close
safety valves in the blowout preventer. However, the blowout preventer has its own safety
mechanism in which two separate systems should have shut the valves automatically when it
lost contact with the surface. One system seems to have had a flat battery and the other a
defective switch. Consequently, the blowout preventer did not close.

Though we admit it was our companys fault and negligence which has contributed to this
accident, we would like to clarify that it was unintentional and the spill was not caused by one
sole reason. Through the evidence reported, the oil spill was caused by a series of complex
events, rather than a single mistake or failure, which eventually led to the tragedy. As the
matter of fact , multiple parties, including BP, Halliburton and offshore drilling company
Transocean, were involved. All these company involved are equally shocked about the
accident and didnt forsee this happening. If we had made due updates about what was going
around, we would have tried our level best to avoid this tragedy. It is our negligence which
contributed to this tragedy and we are deeply sorry and ashamed about it.

Thus, i hereby would like to announce that we are taking responsibility for the clean-up of the
oil spill. In addition, we are working under the direction of the Federal Government to
respond swiftly to compensate the victims and the family who were affected by the impact of
the accident. Futher more, we are taking responsibility to look after the health, safety and
welfare of the large number of residents who live around the oil spill; as this accident would
have indirectly caused damage to them. We are also sincerely grateful to the people who
helped us respond to the spill and would like to show our gratitude by some amount. Finally,
we are taking full responsibility to support the economic recovery of the Gulf Coasts tourism
and seafood industries impacted by the spill.

Apart from compansation, We have and still conducting studies with the Federal and State
natural resource trustees to identify and define the injury to natural resources in the Gulf of
Mexico and take necessary steps to reduce the impact on them and preseve their natural
state.

Due to this incident, the companys image and international status is facing an utmost
danger. As the oil spill had created an uproar among the citizens and internationally, many
protestors are showing their dissatisfaction towards our company for creating such an impact
to the environment especially nature conservation NGO companies. As stated earlier, we are
accept our fault and will at any cost fix the damages done and to not worsen the situation.

The management of BP is still looking for better solutions such as increasing safety
measures, recruiting more professionals and as well as to provide enhancement training for
current employees. In addition, we have committed long-term funding for independent
research to improve our knowledge of the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem and better understand
and mitigate the potential impacts of oil spills in the region and elsewhere. We promise to not
cause any more damage to the environment and the ecosystem in the future as we are also
concerned about it, and we hope to gain your trust on us as soon as possible by working
together with all possible organisations to fix the damage done.

Thank you.
