Circles and Right Triangles

Goal 1: To derive the relationships between measurements of a circle.

Web site: http://www.Geogebra.com Click on “Web Start,” then click on “Applet Start.”

Step 1: Draw a circle.

 Click on the circle tool.

 Click on where you want the center of the circle to be, and move your mouse to make the circle.

Step 2: Determine measurements.

 Type these EXACTLY: (<ENTER> means to press the enter button. Don’t type <ENTER>)

radius=Radius[c] <ENTER>
circumference=Circumference[c] <ENTER>
area=Area[c] <ENTER>

Step 3: Recording Data.

Step 5: Reinforce Discoveries.

Question 1: Do you recognize the decimals you just got? If so, from what?
 Work in partners, but turn in separate work.
 Anything not completed in class is homework. You can access these programs at home.

Question 2: Write the formulas for the Area and Circumference of a circle.

Question 3:
a) Using the equation for the Circumference of a circle, solve for π .

b) Using the equation for the Area of a circle, solve for π .

Question 4: Explain to a friend what π is and where the number comes from.

Goal 2: To derive the relationships between the sides of a right triangle.

Step 1: Set the preferences.

 Open the Gizmo “Similar Polygons – Activity 1”

 Change the scale factor to 3 (at the top left)

 Make a right triangle with a right angle at ∠ G.

Question 1: Which side is opposite ∠ E? a. b. c.

Question 2: Which side is adjacent to ∠ E? a. b. c.

Question 3: Which is the hypotenuse? a. b. c.

Step 2: Recording Data.

 Make the following triangles, and then record the data below.
 The Pre-Image is Δ ABC and the Image is Δ EFG.
 The m∠ G must ALWAYS be 90°.
 Use the calculator to make the ratios decimals.
 Work in partners, but turn in separate work.
 Anything not completed in class is homework. You can access these programs at home.

Step 3: Reinforce Discoveries.

Question 4: Which triangles are similar to each other?

Question 5: What did you notice about the ratios for the similar right triangles?

Question 6: Do you think this would use for other triangles (Acute and Obtuse)? How could you test it
to be sure?
