SOLUTIONS IN CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION

April 2009

Reidbar used on
Network Arch Bridges
Designers Holmes Consulting Group attended a conference in 2007, given
by HERA's Bridge Design Group, on network arch bridges by Dr Per Tveit
of Norway. Network arch bridges have been used in Europe for some 40
years and have been shown to be economical in both construction and
maintenance.

Bridge 47, Mangamahu Road spans over the Mangawhero River north east
of Wanganui. Back in July 2006, devastating floods destroyed the original
3-span bridge and resulted in a temporary Bailey bridge erected to
maintain permanent access, till a replacement could be provided.

In 2007, the Wanganui District Council commenced a design-build tender

process for a replacement bridge at the existing location. The proposed
Contractor, Concrete Structures (NZ) Ltd and their design engineers
Holmes Consulting Group, adopted the network arch philosophy, and they
proceeded to design the Mangamahu network arch bridge, the first of its
type in New Zealand.

Suitable for shorter spans from 80m to 250m and made of composite steel
and concrete, these bridges have significant advantages through efficiency
of materials, in comparison to other forms of tied structures.

Phil Gaby and Michael Chan from Holmes Consulting

Group, the lead designers, chose galvanised RB32
Reidbar for the inclined vertical hangers, as they
were easy to acquire, economical and suitable for the site conditions. The inclined hangers with multiple
intersections, distribute forces in such a way that bending moments and shear forces act just like a truss.

Using the arch concept enabled the opportunity to remove the central pier proposed in the middle of the
river, and eliminate the costs associated, with the river protection works that the central pier would have
required. The network arch superstructure is also shallower than the original bridge, meaning that the
approaches to the bridge did not have to be raised, in order to maintain clearances to the river below.
The relatively light superstructure allowed the use of common size mobile cranes.

Overall, the network arch bridge was the cheapest tender received for this project, producing a 30% cost saving from the
Council's conforming design and was completed, four months ahead of the envisaged program.

The resulting bridge is simple, elegant in design and an innovative solution for the site.

The Mangamahu project has been submitted as an entry in the

ACENZ Awards of Excellence 2009.

Looking back on that first trip three things stood out Page 4
as opportunities in New Zealand: Compliance:
1. Tilt-up and Precast walling systems should be able to replace blockwork Clutch Discard Criteria

3. The American system of using greased and sheathed strand seemed

Bracing Feature:
Opportunity 1 was achieved with the introduction of properly designed lifting and Case Studies
propping systems with software programs that enabled us to tilt or rotate large

Opportunity 2 was realized when we entered into an agreement with Pacific Steel to New Technology:
produce our Reidbar System, which meant we could offer a Reidbar Grout Sleeve Magic Patch / Magic Coat
to provide a full-strength structural connection between precast structural elements.

Opportunity 3 was attempted in the mid 1990s when we introduced the SwiftFloor
system. This involved using normal Reidbar placed inside PVC ducts to post-tension Page 9

Several very successful SwiftFloors were produced, including the Riccarton Shopping

There were, however, several limitations to the Swiftfloor System due to having to use
low-strength Reidbar rather than proper post-tensioning strand. These included the Page 10
low level of pre-stress provided by 500 Grade Reidbar, the short lengths of Reidbar,
the cost and labour involved in threaded Reidbar into PVC tubes, etc. Because of this Sustainability:

adopt the system immediately. Sponsorship

Precast companies are keen to adopt the product and our Reid design service, which
will replace strongbacks and expensive timber shutters to enable slender precast
elements to be transported and erected on site.

New Zealand building owners can now enjoy the benefits of crack and joint-free
concrete floors that will not deteriorate quickly the way that saw-cut floors tend to do
under heavy wheel and fork hoist loads.

To be able to produce these floors more

Reid ECC Modular Pre-cast Stair System
Recent research and development on 'bendable' ECC concrete (Engineered Cementitious
Composite), has highlighted an abundance of potential products for manufacture by the NZ Precast
Industry. One of those key products is a modular precast stair system. Another Reid innovation is
taking place.

Reid Modular Precast Stair System is the low-cost

Light-weight alternative to standard precast stairs
Low Cost
Stringer lengths, angles, tread and riser depths are easily changed within one standard
mould dispensing with the need for expensive mould development, thus providing a lower
cost alternative to traditional precast stairs.
Affordable one off applications particularly for low rise commercial and residential application
are therefore now a reality.
The stairs and treads have little or no steel requirements during manufacture. ECC has tensile
ductility several hundred times that of normal concrete.
Lightweight
Designed with the minimum of weight due to the narrow tread and riser thicknesses and narrow stringer depth. This may result in
significant engineering advantages to the building structure.
ECC Stair System (nine treads, risers and a landing) weights approx 500kg, a far lighter system than a standard staircase
Significantly smaller crane requirements for lifting.
Can be prefabricated or assembled on site as each of the components can generally be lifted by two men.

Architectural Specification
Can be coloured using Peter Fell coloured concrete.
ECC is Environmentally Sustainable as a result of the use of Fly Ash during manufacture. Fly Ash is a by-product of coal
generation.
Modular Precast Stair System can be used in residential applications - no squeaking, lighter handling, minimal to no crane time
Suitable for tiling

Swiftlift Lifting Eye - Discard Criteria

1. With a spate of accidents of late, it is timely that we remind companies of the Discard Criteria for
Swiftlift Lifting Eyes.
2. Discard criteria is published for the visual checking of lifting eyes by any user on an on-going
basis. At the same time, Reid require that all such lifting eyes should also be tested by any
competent facility, to twice the working load limit on the following occasions
a) Annually
b) Whenever the user believes any lifting eye may have been overloaded.
c) Whenever the user believes the lifting eye might marginally fail to meet the criteria
as set below and requires a further opinion on the need to discard.

The Approved New Zealand Code of Practice for Load Lifting Rigging (Section 5.13.1) requires that all
lifting eyes be recorded in a register and that a visual inspection should be made each time a lifting
eye is used.

Specific Discard Criteria

3. The lifting eye must remain true to the dimensions and form in the drawing, with the exceptions
listed below (items 4-6).
4. The crown of the handle (dimension K) may lose up to 20% of its depth by metal displacement
by point loading of lifting shackles or hooks, at the mid point of (dimension A).
5. The loop through the sphere may lose up to but not more than 10% of diameter due to wear.
6. The slot in the sphere (dimensions H and M), must not exceed the maximum and minimum
dimensions given in the Reid Swiftlift Design Manual.

Gauges for 1, 2 and 5LE slots are available at no charge from Reid. 10 and 20LE slots must be
measured using callipers.

7. Additional reasons for discarding are as follows:

a) Any sign of cracking at any point;
b) Any failure to accept a normal foot anchor through to the blind end of the slot.
8. It is common for lifting eye handles to be bent slightly under site conditions. If the angle of the bend is greater than five
degrees, the lifting eye should be discarded or returned for complete straightening, re-heat treatment, crack testing and
proof testing.

Advice and Testing

9. Where any doubt exists, individual Swiftlift Lifting Eyes may be sent by Reid Branches to Reid Head Office located in
Auckland, for QA inspection and proof testing.
10. Where tensile testing is found necessary (para 2 above), Swiflift Lifting Eyes should be tested in both straight tension relative
to the axis of the anchor and at ninety degrees to that axis where the stress is across the slot in the sphere.

Reidbrace

ReidBrace, the affordable bracing system

Wind forces, like earthquakes, can create horizontal forces on
buildings and every building needs to be sufficiently strong to
withstand these forces. We designed Reidbrace to be an
economic solution for in plane bracing in residential, light and
heavy commercial construction where wind loading and seismic
forces are an issue.

Typical applications include: Wall and roof bracing, retro fitted

seismic bracing, retaining wall tie backs and cross ties.

Reidbrace complies with NZS3604 and is engineered and tested

to exceed the ultimate capacity of the 500E Grade Reidbar. It is
also suitable for bracing systems categories 2, 3 or 4 under NZ
Steel Structures Standard NZS3404.

Other features of our Reidbrace system are:

Reidbrace and Reidbar, used in

Conservation Project
The Franz Josef region on the West Coast of the South Island, is famous for the
glacier and its beautiful native bush. About 30km north of Franz Josef is the
Whataroa major river system. This system splits into a number of valleys which
are accessed by trampers and walkers in their thousands every year.

The Department of Conservation is responsible for maintaining the tracks

and bridges in this remote part of New Zealand. Six months ago, DOC
commissioned Jon Calder, Design Engineer from DOC, the job of designing
the new Top Butler Track swing bridge and the board walk for Palaver Creek on
the Copeland Track at Fox Glacier.

Jon came up with an innovative design for

the swing bridge using the Reidbrace
system from Reid. The swing bridge is
accessed by walking some 8 hours or flying
in by helicopter, so the construction of the
bridge needed to be simple. A hole was
drilled in to the rock face then Reidbar
anchor rods were epoxied in. Reidbrace
ends were then used to connect to the
forged eye and cables.

Jon commented that the beauty of the

Reidbrace system was that it was off the
shelf and didn't require manufacture of
expensive fittings. The Reidbrace system
is adjustable and after installation it was able
to be cut to a suitable length.

In all, this project has been successful through ease of installation, time savings and the reduction of costs. For further information,
please contact the Reid Engineering Department, Terry Seagrave on 0800 88 22 12.

Grafton Bridge Strengthening Project

The iconic Grafton Bridge, Auckland was originally constructed in 1908 and
took two and half years to complete. At that time, it was claimed to be the
biggest span, reinforced concrete arch bridge in the world. How times have
moved on.

The heritage bridge is now closed for seismic strengthening, as an

investigation found that it would not withstand a major earthquake and that
large vehicles were too heavy to use the bridge.

Access to reinforce the structure is extremely difficult, as it was during the

original construction. Mick Spratling and Phil McConchie of Camelspace
were called in to provide a hanging scaffold system to overcome the site
limitations.

Mick and Phil used Reidbrace fittings in their scaffolding design, a truly unique
way of fitting a hanging structure. Holes were drilled through the road surface and
Reidbar was then inserted into the holes and fixed with Reidbar flange nuts.
From the underside of the bridge, Reidbrace ends hold up the working platform
6m x 100m long. 4m wide cantilevered split level wings were installed on each
side to gain access to the outside of the bridge balustrades. In all, over 100 tonne
of scaffold was fixed in place.

The project is due to finish early 2010 and will be able to survive a one-in-a-
thousand-year earthquake and handle up to 1200 buses each weekday. It is a
tribute to the original engineering design and it will continue to survive many years
to come.

Project Recently, Reid Christchurch Branch moved from its premises
in Wrights Rd to its South Island Distribution Centre and joint
Ramset Trade Centre in OShannessey Place, Christchurch.
Seismic Retrofit of An official branch opening & joint trade breakfast took place on
Unreinforced Masonry Buildings the 26th of March and was attended by several senior members
of the construction industry.

Although Ramset and Reid will remain as separate business

units, the move will bring enhancements to customer service
created by sharing logistics and administration operations.

All telephone and fax numbers remain the same.

In late 2008, Reid were approached by Jason Ingam of

University of Auckland Engineering Department, to participate
in a research project on seismic retrofitting of unreinforced
masonry buildings.

In New Zealand alone, there are 3000 buildings that require

retrofitting to meet the NZ standards.

Three of the potential methods that University of Auckland

looked at were:

Shotcreting
Fibre Reinforced Polymers
Post Tensioning
