BIOL 1010 GENERAL BIOLOGY Three hours lecture, two hours laboratory (4)
A principles course: the scientific method, nature of organic molecules, cell structure, energy transformation, cell
division, nature of genes and gene action, vertebrate reproduction and development, animal organization and
homeostasis, circulatory, digestive, and immune systems.
BIOL 1020 GENERAL BIOLOGY Three hours lecture, two hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: 1010
A continuation of BIOL 1010: internal transport and regulation of body fluids, gas exchange, body movement
and support, nervous control, sensory receptors and hormonal regulation, evolution and diversity among
organisms, and a survey of the five biotic kingdoms.
BIOL 2010 HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY Three hours lecture, two hours laboratory (4)
Primarily designed for students in health and human performance, psychology, nursing and allied health
programs. Structure and function of the human body with emphasis on cellular structure and function, tissues,
integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous and endocrine systems.
BIOL 2020 HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY Three hours lecture, two hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: 2010
Continuation of BIOL 2010. Emphasis placed on the cardiovascular, lymphatic, immune, respiratory, digestive,
and excretory systems, water and electrolyte balance, human reproduction, growth and development, and human
genetics.
BIOL 2050 MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY (3)
Prerequisite: One year Freshman English
Not open to students majoring or minoring in biology. An introduction to medical vocabulary including definition
of terms, general usage, spelling and pronunciation. Common prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining forms
and abbreviations concerned with the health professions are stressed.
BIOL 3060 ANIMAL DIVERSITY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: 1010
A comparative study of the taxonomy, functional morphology, development, ecology, and evolution of
representative invertebrate and vertebrate groups.
BIOL 3070 PLANT DIVERSITY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: 1010
An evolutionary survey of the plant kingdom (including fungi), involving a comparative study of the structure,
reproduction, life cycle, and importance of representatives from the various groups.
BIOL 3300 PRINCIPLES OF MICROBIOLOGY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: One year Biology
An introductory study of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoans with particular emphasis on their relationship to
infection and disease. Asepsis, immunity, sterilization, and special problems related to patients and hospitals.
Completion of 3300 disallows 4300 for a Biology major or minor.
BIOL 3330 PRINCIPLES OF EVOLUTION Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: 1010
Designed to impart an understanding of the core concepts in modern evolutionary theory, and an appreciation of
the central position that theory holds as a theme unifying all subdisciplines of biology.
BIOL 3730 MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: 3300 or 4300
Knowledge and interpretation which will enable the student to become proficient in isolating and identifying
human pathogens. Bacterial isolation and morphology will be stressed.
BIOL 3760 IMMUNOLOGY AND SEROLOGY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: 3300 or 4300
Fundamentals of antigen-antibody reactions, and serologic procedure performed in the clinical laboratory.
BIOL 380A, B MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY INTERNSHIP (15 each)
Two semesters of clinical practicum applying the skills and abilities learned during the previous six semesters of
the curriculum. Students are assigned to an accredited hospital laboratory.
BIOL 3910 FUNDAMENTALS OF HEMATOLOGY Three hours lecture, six hours laboratory (5)
Prerequisite: 2020
Study of formed elements of the blood and the mechanism of coagulation with an emphasis on normal
development and routine evaluation of material together with development of basic laboratory skills. The use of
statistics in the analysis and interpretation of laboratory data.
BIOL 3940 FUNDAMENTALS OF CLINICAL ANALYSIS Three hours lecture, six hours laboratory (5)
Prerequisite: 3910 or permission of instructor
Use of proper glassware and reagents; test performance relating to procedures, instrumentation including
maintenance and quality control; carbohydrate metabolism and renal function are stressed.
BIOL 4040 HISTOLOGY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: 1010
Principal mammalian tissues. Primary emphasis is placed on the recognition of cells and the relationship within
the organs.
BIOL 4050 FIELD BOTANY Two hours lecture, four hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: One year Biology
A study of local vascular plants with emphasis on identification, the use of manuals, preparation of collections,
and distinguishing features of the major groups.
BIOL 4080 GENERAL ECOLOGY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: One year Biology
A survey of basic ecological principles and processes and their application of the welfare of man and his
environment. Lecture and laboratory activities focus on understanding ecosystem dynamics.
BIOL 4090 CLINICAL HEMATOLOGY/PHLEBOTOMY I (2)
Prerequisite: 4910
Introduction to fundamental techniques along with practical experience in the routine clinical hematology section
at an affiliated hospital laboratory. Phlebotomy techniques will be taught.
BIOL 4110 ANIMAL PHYSIOLOGY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisites: 1010, 3060, and one year General Chemistry
A survey of animal physiology with emphasis on mammalian systems. The molecular and cellular aspects of
physiology as they relate to the function of the organisms are considered. All major systems are discussed.
BIOL 4120 PLANT PHYSIOLOGY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisites: One year Biology and General Chemistry
Principal physiological process of plants including mineral nutrition, photosynthesis, water relation, translocation,
respiration, growth hormones, photophysiology, and biological function of nucleic acids and proteins.
BIOL 4130 GENETICS Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: 1010
Consideration of the principles underlying inheritance in plants and animals. Application of these principles to
population dynamics. Concepts are taught through problems based on experimental data.
BIOL 4200 GENERAL EMBRYOLOGY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: 1010
The morphology and physiology of vertebrate development.
BIOL 4290 CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY (2)
Prerequisites: 3300, 3730, 3760
Practical experience in the routine isolation and identification of medically significant bacteria, fungi, and
parasites using approved methods at an affiliated hospital laboratory.
BIOL 4300 BACTERIOLOGY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisites: One year Biology and General Chemistry
An introduction to each of the 10 groups of bacteria. Major emphasis will be placed on these groups that greatly
affect humans through their beneficial or detrimental attributes.
BIOL 4350 FIELD ZOOLOGY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: 3060
A survey of the native vertebrate animals, with emphasis on collecting, preservation, identification, and
taxonomic relationships.
BIOL 4390 CLINICAL IMMUNOHEMATOLOGY/SEROLOGY I (2)
Prerequisite: 4930
Practical experience in the current methods of grouping, typing, fetal screening, transfusion therapy, and serology
testing in an affiliated hospital laboratory.
BIOL 4400 TEACHING SCIENCE IN HIGH SCHOOL (3)
Prerequisite: Approval of department chair
Objectives of high school courses, lesson plans, evaluations, supplies and equipment, problem solving, laboratory
procedures, textbook evaluation, liability, visual aids, motivation, classroom organization, and problem
prevention. Thirty hours of field experience are required.
BIOL 4440 CELL AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisites: One year general Biology and General Chemistry
The fundamental role of macromolecules and cell ultrastructure in mediating such cellular activities as
permeability, excitability, secretion, cell-cell communication, and energy transduction. The function of the cell at
the molecular level will be emphasized. Completion of BIOL 3300 disallows 4300 for a Biology major or minor.
BIOL 4450 RECOMBINANT DNA TECHNOLOGY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory(4)
Prerequisites: Senior status and permission of instructor
Instruction of students in the isolation and manipulation of nucleic acids for the construction and characterization
of recombinant DNA molecules either for the generation of genetic probes or the development of genetically
engineered microorganisms. Emphasis will be placed on the uses of these tools in biological research,
biotechnology, and diagnostics.
BIOL 4490 CLINICAL CHEMISTRY/URINALYSIS I (2)
Prerequisite: 4940 or 4970
Introduction to fundamental techniques along with practical experience in the routine clinical chemistry/urinalysis
section at an affiliated hospital laboratory.
BIOL 4500 RESEARCH Two to six hours laboratory (2-4)
Prerequisites: Permission of the Instructor, minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA, 3.00 average in Biology; 16 hours of
3000-4999 level biology courses.
This course is offered for those who desire to pursue a special study of some biological problems beyond what is
possible in regular courses. The student is expected to select and plan a research problem and pursue it to some
state of completion. The data are to be written in acceptable scientific form and available for a seminar.
Maximum of eight hours.
BIOL 457B INVERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisites: 3060, Senior status and permission of instructor
A study of the diversity of the invertebrates through presentation on the taxonomy, morphology, development,
ecology, and evolution of selected invertebrate phyla. Emphasis will be placed on invertebrate phylogeny based
on comparative morphology.
BIOL 4590 CLINICAL IMMUNOHEMATOLOGY/SEROLOGY II (2)
Prerequisite: 4390 or approval of the program director
Emphasis will be placed on equipment maintenance, reporting and correlation results, quality control and
proficiency testing of case studies and special procedures in the clinical immunohematology/serology section of
an affiliated hospital laboratory.
BIOL 4600 PARASITOLOGY Three hour lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisites: 1010 and permission of instructor
A survey of the parasitic protozoans, helminths, and arthropods affecting man and other animals. Emphasis is
placed upon morphology, life-cycles, host- parasite relationships, method of reproduction, transmission, and
control.
BIOL 4690 CLINICAL HEMATOLOGY II (2)
Prerequisite: 4090 or approval of the program director
Emphasis will be placed on equipment maintenance, reporting and co relating results, quality control and
proficiency testing, case studies and special procedures in the clinical hematology section of an affiliated hospital
laboratory.
BIOL 4730 DIAGNOSTIC MICROBIOLOGY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisites: 3730, permission of instructor
State of the art pathogen isolation and identification from human specimens as based on signs and symptoms of
disease in the patient.
BIOL 4750 CLINICAL LABORATORY MANAGEMENT/SEMINAR (3)
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor
Organization, cost control, and management tools for laboratory operations and local, state, and federal
regulations will be presented. Students will prepare and present a paper on an approved topic.
BIOL 4770 CLINICAL PATHOLOGY / EDUCATION / RESEARCH (3)
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor
Clinical interpretation of lecture data and correlation with disease processes, methodology and procedures to
establish continuing courses, and proposals for educational and research.
BIOL 4790 CLINICAL CHEMISTRY/URINALYSIS II (2)
Prerequisite: 4490 or approval of the program director
Emphasis will be placed on equipment maintenance, reporting and correlating results, quality control and
proficiency testing, case studies and special procedures in the clinical chemistry/urinalysis section of an affiliated
hospital laboratory.
BIOL 4810 WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP (15)
Prerequisite: Junior or Senior Status
One semester of on-the-job experience in various phases of wildlife or fisheries management. Student are
assigned as trainees to an APSU- approved agency.
BIOL 4820 ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION INTERNSHIP (15)
Prerequisite: Junior or Senior Status
One semester of on-the-job experience in planning and implementing environmental education programs.
Students are assigned as trainees to an APSU-approved agency.
BIOL 484A, B RADIOLOGICAL LABORATORY INTERNSHIP (15 each)
Two semesters of internship providing practical application of the skills and abilities in radiologic technology.
Students are assigned to an accredited hospital in a designated technology area of diagnostic radiology, nuclear
medicine, computerized axial tomography, ultrasound, nuclear magnetic resonance, Positron emission
tomography, and radiation therapy.
BIOL 4890 CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY II (2)
Prerequisite: 4290 or approval of the program director
Emphasis will be placed on equipment maintenance, reporting and correlating results, quality control and
proficiency testing, case studies and special procedures in the clinical bacteriology/mycology/parasitologysection
of an affiliated hospital laboratory.
BIOL 4910 HEMATOLOGY Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: 3910
A continuation of BIOL 3910. The study of anemias, leukemias, special stains and tests, enzyme deficiencies,
autoimmune disorders, genetic abnormalities, and coagulation disorders.
BIOL 4920 URINALYSIS AND BODY FLUIDS Two hours lecture, four hours laboratory (3)
Prerequisite: 3940
The study of physiology, chemical, and physical aspects of urine; microscopic examination, specimen collection
and handling of spinal fluid; gastric fluid, transudates, and exudates, and other body fluids.
BIOL 4930 MEDICAL SEROLOGY Two hours lecture, four hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisites: 3760 and Acceptance into the Senior Year (clinical phase) or permission of instructor
A study of laboratory procedures (theory and practicum) in clinical serology including ASO, CRP, RPR, ELISA,
IT, and other important diagnostic tests.
BIOL 4940 CLINICAL ANALYSIS I Three hours lecture, six hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisites: 3940 and Acceptance into the Senior Year (clinical phase) or permission of instructor
Study of protein metabolism, enzymes, liver functions, and lipid metabolism emphasizing accepted clinical
laboratory determinations and correlating significance of test results with pathological states.
BIOL 4950 IMMUNOHEMATOLOGY Two hours lecture, four hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: 4910
The immunological aspects of erythrocytes and other cells in the context of blood grouping systems, donor
selection, specimen collection, processing, component preparation, compatibility testing and transfusions. HLA
systems, adverse reactions, and data management are covered.
BIOL 4970 CLINICAL ANALYSIS II Three hours lecture, four hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisites: 4940 and Acceptance into the Senior Year (clinical phase) or permission of instructor
The study of lipoprotein, electrolytes and blood gases with introduction to endocrinology, vitamins, toxicology,
gastric fluid, and cerebrospinal fluid. Clinical significance and correlation of results with pathological states will
be emphasized.
BIOL 4980 MEDICAL MYCOLOGY/PARASITOLOGY Two hours lecture, four hours laboratory (4)
Prerequisite: 4600 or permission of instructor
Designed to introduce the student to fundamental techniques used in the isolation and identification of medically
important fungi as well as the recovery and identification of human parasites.
