MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

"It can happen. It does happen.

But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane.

We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the
last years editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic
excellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are
supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning
and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting
the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to
achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look
forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking
forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in
this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers
are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play
the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive
challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic
needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the
opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on
this path.

My best wishes to all.

HISTORICAL ARTICLE
Thomas Hunt Morgan
Thomas Hunt Morgan was an eminent American zoologist and
geneticist. He is known for his legendary experimental analysis of
the fruit fly, after which he formulated the chromosome theory of
heredity. Morgan also demonstrated that genes are connected in a
series on chromosomes, which carry hereditary traits, therefore
kickstarting the modern field of genetics.
He won the 1933 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his
extraordinary achievements.
Early Life and Education:
Born in Lexington, Kentucky, on September 25, 1866 to a rich,
influential southern family, Thomas Hunt Morgan earned his B.S.
degree from the State College of Kentucky (now the University of
Kentucky) in 1886, and his Ph.D. degree from the Johns Hopkins
University in 1890. After his doctorate, Morgan joined the faculty
of Bryn Mawr College for a while.
Contributions and Achievements:
Thomas Hunt Morgan was appointed a professor of experimental
zoology at Columbia University in 1904. He established a large
laboratory at this place that was later termed as the Fly Room. In
collaboration with fellow biologist Lilian Morgan and several
other assistants, Morgan studied and highlighted the two specific
characteristics of the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster). They
were able to demonstrate the results of mating individual flies
having these specific characteristics. The discovery is regarded as

the earliest to extend Mendels genetics from the plants into the
animals.
Morgan also extensively studied the field of experimental
embryology. He knew the hypothetical connections between
genetics and development, but was rather unwilling at the time to
reveal those links explicitly.
Morgan won the 1924 Darwin Medal, the 1933 Nobel Prize for
Physiology or Medicine and the 1939 Copley Medal.
Later Life and Death:
Thomas Hunt Morgan continued to work in the laboratory until
his death. He died in Pasadena, California, of a heart failure, on
December 4, 1945. Morgan was 79 years old.

Clock stars: Astrocytes keep time for brain,
behavior: (24th March, 2017)
Star-shaped cells called astrocytes, long considered boring,
'support cells,' are finally coming into their own. To everyone's
surprise they even play an important role in the body's master
clock, which schedules everything from the release of hormones to
the onset of sleepiness.
Electrical 'switch' in brain's capillary network
monitors activity and controls blood flow: (24th
March, 2017)
New research has uncovered that capillaries have the capacity to
both sense brain activity and generate an electrical vasodilatory
signal to evoke blood flow and direct nutrients to neurons.

FDA approves first treatment for rare form of
skin cancer
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted accelerated
approval to Bavencio (avelumab) for the treatment of adults and
pediatric patients 12 years and older with metastatic Merkel cell
carcinoma (MCC), including those who have not received prior
chemotherapy. This is the first FDA-approved treatment for
metastatic MCC, a rare, aggressive form of skin cancer.
While skin cancer is one of the most common cancers, patients
with a rare form called Merkel cell cancer have not had an
approved treatment option until now, said Richard Pazdur, M.D.,
acting director of the Office of Hematology and Oncology Products
in the FDAs Center for Drug Evaluation and Research and director
of the FDAs Oncology Center of Excellence. The scientific
community continues to make advances targeting the bodys
immune system mechanisms for the treatment of various types of
cancer. These advancements are leading to new therapieseven in

rare forms of cancer where treatment options are limited or non-

existent.
According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 1,600
people in the United States are diagnosed with MCC every year.
While the majority of patients present with localized tumors that
can be treated with surgical resection, approximately half of all
patients will experience recurrence, and more than 30 percent will
eventually develop metastatic disease. In patients with metastatic
MCC, the cancer has spread beyond the skin into other parts of
the body.
Bavencio targets the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway (proteins found on the
bodys immune cells and some cancer cells). By blocking these
interactions, Bavencio may help the bodys immune system attack
cancer cells.
Bavencio received an Accelerated Approval, which enables the
FDA to approve drugs for serious conditions to fill an unmet
medical need using clinical trial data that is thought to predict a
clinical benefit to patients. Further clinical trials are required to
confirm Bavencios clinical benefit and the sponsor is currently
conducting these studies.
Todays approval of Bavencio was based on data from a single-arm
trial of 88 patients with metastatic MCC who had been previously
treated with at least one prior chemotherapy regimen. The trial
measured the percentage of patients who experienced complete or
partial shrinkage of their tumors (overall response rate) and, for
patients with a response, the length of time the tumor was
controlled (duration of response). Of the 88 patients who received
Bavencio in the trial, 33 percent experienced complete or partial
shrinkage of their tumors. The response lasted for more than six
months in 86 percent of responding patients and more than 12
months in 45 percent of responding patients.
Common side effects of Bavencio include fatigue, musculoskeletal
pain, diarrhea, nausea, infusion-related reactions, rash, decreased
appetite and swelling of the limbs (peripheral edema). The most
common serious risks of Bavencio are immune-mediated, where

the bodys immune system attacks healthy cells or organs, such as

the lungs (pneumonitis), liver (hepatitis), colon (colitis),
hormone-producing glands (endocrinopathies) and kidneys
(nephritis). In addition, there is a risk of serious infusion-related
reactions. Patients who experience severe or life-threatening
infusion-related reactions should stop using Bavencio. Women
who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take Bavencio
because it may cause harm to a developing fetus or a newborn
baby.
The FDA granted this application Priority
Review and Breakthrough Therapydesignation. Bavencio also
received Orphan Drug designation, which provides incentives to
assist and encourage the development of drugs for rare diseases.
The FDA granted accelerated approval of Bavencio to EMD Serono
Inc.
The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety,
effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines
and other biological products for human use, and medical devices.
The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our
nations food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, and products
that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco
products.
