GNWL: General Waiting List (GNWL) waitlisted tickets are issued when the passen

ger begins his/her journey at the originating station of a route or stations cl

ose to the originating station. This is most common type of waiting list and ha
s got the highest chances of confirmation.
RLWL: Remote Location Waiting List (RLWL) means ticket is issued for intermedia
te stations (between the originating and terminating stations) because usually
these are the most important towns or cities on that particular route. This typ
e of tickets will be given a separate priority and confirmations will depend on
the cancellations of a destination confirmed ticket. For this type of ticket t
here are less chances of confirmation.
PQWL: A Pooled Quota Waiting List (PQWL) is shared by several small stations. P
ooled Quotas normally operate only from the originating station of a route, and
there is only one Pooled Quota for the entire run. The Pooled Quota is general
ly allotted for passengers travelling from the originating station to a station
short of the terminating station, or from an intermediate station to the termi
nating station, or between two intermediate stations.
RLGN: Remote Location General Waiting List (RLGN) is issued when a user books a
ticket where WL quota is RLWL. This means after ticket booking RLWL gets named
as RLGN.
RSWL: Roadside Station Waiting List (RSWL) is allotted when berths or seats are
booked by the originating station for journeys up to the road-side station and
distance restrictions may not apply. This waiting list has also very less chan
ces of confirmation.
RQWL: If a ticket is to be booked from an intermediate station to another inter
mediate station, and if it is not covered by the general quota or by the remote
location quotas or pooled quota, the request for the ticket may go into a Requ
est Waiting List (RQWL).
CKWL: For tatkal tickets, the waiting list issued is CKWL. If CKWL ticket goes
up, it directly gets confirmed and doesn t go through RAC status unlike GNWL.

Probability of getting ticket confirmed ,
GNWL > RLWL > PQWL
GNWL = General quota waitlist
The General quota is for passengers travelling the full length (or most of the w
ay) of the train's journey, and the General quota is usually the largest quota.
RLWL = Remote Location quota waitlist
On long distance trains, some stations along the route will be designated Remote
Location stations, these will be big stations, and mostly where the train will
call at the chosen station (and at the destination station) at popular times, it
may also be a station that many people will book to (from the originating stati
on), and this can mean that many seats/berths will become available at the remot
e location station.
Remote Location stations prepare their own reservation chart 2-4 hours before th
e train is due to arrive/depart from that station, or the evening before in the
case of late/very early departures.
PQWL = Pooled Quota waitlist
Pooled Quota is basically anything not covered by the other quotas, though the G
eneral ad Remote Location quotas take up most berths. (and lately the Tatkal quo
ta).
Pooled quota can include (though not always) Originating station to intermediate
station, Intermediate to intermediate, and intermediate to destination station
(though it would be separate from remote location quotas).

A Waiting List Ticket (WL) is issued when there are no more reserved seats avail
able to be booked. Indian Railways follows different quotas for each running tra
in, with each quota in a train having a fixed number of reserved seats in differ
ent classes.
GNWL - General Waiting List : A Ticket with a GNWL is issued when the Source sta
tion of the passenger is the Source station of the train or one of the stations
near to it. This quota has the highest number of seats in any given train and ha
s the highest probablity of getting confirmed at the time of final charting.
PQWL - Pooled Quota Waiting List - Most trains has a defined pooled quota which
is used if you start from the Source station of the train but terminate at some
station before the Destination of the train. This has fewer seats as compared to
GNWL, thus a lesser probability for cofirmation.
Apart from these 2, there a couple of more quotas that are frequently used :
1. RLWL - Remote Location Waiting List : Most trains have important stations mar
ked as Remote Locations in the route, which mark the beginning of the RLWL quota
s in the train. Hence, every train consists of a number of Remote Location Quota
s, each with a fixed number of seats reserved. When the Source station of the pa
ssenger is one of these marked stations, or some stations after that, the RLWL q
uota is applicable on the reservations. Even this quota has a fewer number of se
ats as compared to GNWL.
2. CKWL - Tatkal Wating List (I wonder why it's CK, I'd be glad if anyone could
help me out in telling why it's so). Most trains have a Tatkal Quota reserved to
be booked one day in advance. Hence, the Waiting List is of the type CKWL, irre
spective of your Source and Destination Stations.
The chances of confirmation depend heavily on the number of seats in that partic
ular quota. Hence, it is very much possible that a ticket with RLWL 20 doesn't g
et confirmed, whereas GNWL 200 gets confirmed in the same train (Note : They wou
ld have different source stations, hence the different Quota applicable).
Hope this helps!

GNWL: General Waiting List (GNWL) waitlisted tickets are issued when the passeng

ese are the most important towns or cities on that particular route. This type o
f tickets will be given a separate priority and confirmations will depend on the
cancellations of a destination confirmed ticket. Remote location stations prepa
re there own chart 2-3 hours before the actual departure of train. For this type
of ticket there are less chances of confirmation.
PQWL: A Pooled Quota Waiting List (PQWL) is shared by several small stations. Po
oled Quotas normally operate only from the originating station of a route, and t
here is only one Pooled Quota for the entire run. The Pooled Quota is generally
allotted for passengers travelling from the originating station to a station sho
rt of the terminating station, or from an intermediate station to the terminatin

RLGN: Remote Location General Waiting List (RLGN) is issued when a user books a

s RLGN.
RSWL: Roadside Station Waiting List (RSWL) is allotted when berths or seats are

istance restrictions may not apply. This waiting list has also very less chances
of confirmation.
RQWL: If a ticket is to be booked from an intermediate station to another interm
ediate station, and if it is not covered by the general quota or by the remote l
ocation quotas or pooled quota, the request for the ticket may go into a Request
Waiting List (RQWL).
CKWL or Tatkal waiting list: For tatkal tickets, the waiting list issued is CKWL
. If tatkal ticket goes up, it directly gets confirmed and doesn t go through RAC
status unlike GNWL. During chart preparation, general waiting list (GNWL) is pre
ferred over tatkal waiting list (CKWL) therefore tatkal waitlisted tickets are l
ess likely to get confirmed. Follow thesetatkal booking tips to get a confirmed
tatkal ticket.
Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC): If a user has been issued an RAC ticket,
then most likely his ticket will get confirmed by the time of chart preparation
and he will get a berth. In case the ticket remains RAC even after chart prepar
ation (if the coach number is preceded by R i.e. RB1, 31 means RAC seat no 31 in
coach B1), then user is allotted a half berth (seat) i.e. two persons having RA
C ticket status are allotted one side-lower berth. The TTE is obligated to allot
berths which are cancelled after chart preparation to these RAC passengers.
Confirmed (CNF): In this case the passenger gets a full berth for the journey. I
n case of first AC (1A), the passenger may not get berth details even for confir
med ticket when ticket is issued. This is because the berth allotment for this c
lass is done manually by the TTE on chart preparation.

A Pooled Quota Waiting List ('PQWL') is shared by several small stations in a pa
rticular region. E.g., Tiruppur, Salem, etc., share in the quota and wait list f
or some trains originating from Trivandrum or Mangalore. As another example, the
2723 Andhra Pradesh Exp. has three quotas, for Secunderabad - New Delhi, Secund
erabad - nagpur, and Secunderabad - Bhopal. There is also a pooled quota for pas
sengers travelling from Secunderabad to stations beyond Bhopal but short of Jhan
si. If this quota is exhausted, a passenger is placed in the pooled quota waitin
g list. Pooled Quotas normally operate only from the originating station of a ro
ute, and there is only one Pooled Quota for the entire run. The Pooled Quota is
intended to be utilized by passengers travelling from the originating station to
a station short of the terminating station, or from an intermediate station to
the terminating station, or between two intermediate stations. Such remote locat
ion quotas are also provided when there is a very strong demand for the train in
question, because of which, without such additional quotas, all seats or berths
might be fully consumed by passengers from the originating station leaving noth
ing available for those wishing to travel from intermediate points. Vacant Poole
d Quota berths are automatically tapped by the PRS for booking end-to-end passen
gers. Passengers in the Pooled Quota Waiting List are cleared against the vacanc
ies in the earmarked Pooled Quota only, or against General Quota vacancies avail
able at the time of charting.
